What artists need the comp treatment?

It's true that certain artists are best represented by their compilations as their albums can be hit or miss. You don't want to spend the money gettin each album but you know each one has some fantastic moments. Which artists would benefit greatly by getting the comp treatment?

Off the top of my head, I'd say Mercury Rev.

I would really love a Homosexuals best-of or box set. I'm unwilling to pay $$$ for the old stuff on tape and album. I kinda wish someone would put out a post-punk/DIY version of Nuggets cuz that stuff in just to pricey for anyone other then the most obsessed record geek. Hell, I'd buy a Half Man Half Biscuit box set in a second. But that's just me. Someone is actually selling a Homosexuals CDR on Ebay of various singles and stuff and it goes for 50 dollars and up! I'm always soooooo grateful whenever someone puts out something like that Lilliput or ESG comp cuz it means the music is yanked out the hands of creepy collectors and given to the people who missed out the first time.( full disclosure: Some of my best friends are creepy collectors and I have been known to miss out on a lot cuz I'm a little slow.My knowledge of the development and evolution of dance music is always 2 to 3 years behind cuz I buy DJ castoffs for a dollar long after what I'm buying has ceased to be cool.Give me a year and I'll be able to tell you all about IDM!)

Seriously:
Sloan (to be released in Europe and States only), Rheostatics (though everyone SHOULD buy their albums), Teenage Fanclub and Songs:Ohia.

i am still trying to figure out why exactly laika is putting out a greatest hits record after three albums??? especially when the last was a major bomb.

keith, Sunday, 1 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

They got a four album contract by any chance?

Dolly Mixture need the comp treatment. A compilation of their singles would be manna from heaven pour moi.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't really in the spirit of the original question though. Yo La Tengo may benefit from a compilation of album tracks.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

how many singles did dolly mixture have? songs that weren't on demonstration tapes? i've only ever seen one.

keith, Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

and i think laika are making a new album for too pure at the moment, i imagine the comp is because they are terribly slow at churning out the hits.

keith, Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

DM had 4 singles, plus a 12" and a posthumous 4-song CD in Japan.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Um why not...Elliott Smith, Breeders, Thowing Muses, Ben Harper, Weezer and er Atomic Kitten

Playgroup (the On-U-Sound one, not the current Playgroup). SPK (2 volumes, one "musical" and one "other"). Loud Family (I'll do it!). Fugazi. The Dictators. Let's Active (has been done, but the sound is bad and I don't like the choices). 3 o' Clock/Permanent Green Light. Orchid Spangiafora. Bryan Ferry (all the covers). Gescom. Television. Turbonegro. Animals (psychedelic period). The Screamers (there's all these excellent tracks on Soulseek, why isn't someone from the Screamers making any money off them?). Mordecai Jones. Fountains of Wayne (best-of-and-unreleased). Seconding the call for GBV, too! And does there already exist a Van Dyke Parks best-of?

Good Question, I'll keep thinking.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 2 September 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Timbaland.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 2 September 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

All-time champion of this thread is the Isley Brothers, no contest. There are '50s comps including Shout and Twist And Shout, there are Motown comps including This Old Heart Of Mine, there are '70s comps including Summer Breeze and Harvest For The World - but because they kept changing labels, there is no overall career comp. It would be among the all-time great albums!

More recently, a Best Of Pulp would be phenomenally great, as would a Wu-Tang comp that included the best of all the solo stuff as well as the group stuff. (The RZA Greatest Hits was somewhere near that, admittedly.) And other producer ones like the Neptunes or Timbaland would be great too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 September 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt - there's a Van Dyke Parks best of called Idiosyncratic Path culled from the first 3 albums only - it's a bit inadequate, chops stuff up too much, almost put me off exploring further.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott S - hope you check here, know i'm a little late to the party, but there are a whole bunch of post-punk/no-fi comps on a label called Hyped 2 Death. Not got any of them myself but they look pretty cool and mindbogglingly comprehensive.

Comps? The Big Daddy Kane.

Flying Saucer Attack. Flaming Lips. Mercury Rev (seconding that request). Kitchens Of Distinction (unless there is one already). Blue Aeroplanes.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

No Wave - they could reissue the "No New York" compilation properly and then, as with the Nuggets box set, expand it to include everything worthwhile done by Teenage Jesus, DNA, Mars, Chance/White, etc.

Re. Contortions; proper Ze Records retrospective also needed, to include early (i.e. good) Was (Not Was), Cristina (long overdue for rediscovery, if you're talking about the spiritual mother to Miss Kittin) as well as the inevitable August Darnell (though I note the Kid Creole albums have just come out again on CD so maybe this might happen).

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur Russell - a comp inc. all of the 'disco' productions PLUS 'World of Echo' wld be nice.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes definitely agree with you about Arthur Russell!

I think I said this on an old KLF thread, but the world DOES need a proper KLF/JAMMs compilation with all the singles in 12" format, plus things like the orig "All You Need Is Love," "3AM Eternal" with Extreme Noise Terror, and B-sides like "America No More."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The Chic Organization

Roy Wood solo/The Move/Wizzard

Dusty Springfield
