johnny crunch, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

This looks like some guy who gets a bunch of PR mp3s just put his iPod on random.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea what demographic Esquire is going for these days, and neither does Esquire, apparently.

Voted the Teddybears/Flaming Lips song because I was high on it LAST YEAR.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

lol

is Funky Donkey off of Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2 or whatever it's called? I listened to some of that over the weekend, and it sounded surprisingly tolerable!

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a good record. I like it, anyway.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I might ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not sure if that's a typo or if there is (plz plz) an act out there called dale earnhardt jr jr but that got my vote. either way it's the only thing up there that doesn't scream 'kcrw' to me.

balls, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

This feels like a good old school lol at the square mainstream rock critics thread. I approve

D-40, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

DEJrJr played at the Ferndale DIY Fair that I went to last year, but I didn't go see them bcz I thought they were 'chillwave'...

hillybilly death worship (absolutely clean glasses), Thursday, 19 May 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard most of these but as long as these lists aren't condescending I don't give a crap.

Deremiah Was a Bullfrog (u s steel), Thursday, 19 May 2011 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

Does Beastie Boys - Funky Donkey sound anything like the Ant and Dec song "Wonky Donkey" ?

Mark G, Thursday, 19 May 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

Why did they put Funky Donkey on the list. The should have put on "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win"

MarkoP, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

have not heard a single one.

Can we have a Creedence 'Chronicle' vs. this list poll pls?

when use becomes abuse (S-), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

I've always wanted to tell someone what I think about esquire's music articles and thanks to ILM I can finally have my 2 cents heard.

I think it sucks and I am offended by esquire trying to guide people in the right direction regarding music. They're no better then pitchfork but they should know better relying on one writer's opinion on coming up with the music you should have. I suggest that esquire avoids these types of music articles all together.

Thanks for listening

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure if I've heard any of these though

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

Not a one

truth to boredom (rip van wanko), Thursday, 26 May 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

bcz of this thread, I listened to 3 of them (Classified, DEJrJr, Beasties)--they were all unremittingly awful.

pax raggetta (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 May 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

I've heard

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong
Death Cab For Cutie - Underneath the Sycamore
Jessica Lea Mayfield - Blue Skies Again
tUnE-yArDs - You Yes You

I guess of those, I'll go with the tUnE-yArDs. (The other three are decent but nowhere near the best on the album they're from. Actually, I don't really remember the Death Cab song.)

jaymc, Thursday, 26 May 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

one of the reasons why i think GQ > esquire is bcuz of how boring/unadventurous the latter's music tastes are

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 May 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah makes sense that Pains & Yards wd be the best bet on here...

pax raggetta (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 May 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't read GQ or Esquire in a zillion years other than the occasional link I see to some article or whatever. I just thought the name of this list was ridiculous, as the songs are neither summery nor overtly masculine in any way.

I'll rep again for the Teddybears/Flaming Lips collabo, but that's because I'm either not in love with or haven't heard the other 29 presented.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 May 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

maybe these songs are good, idk, but fuck this "how to be a man" meme these mags are always pounding

Worst summer ever.

System, Thursday, 26 May 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

two months pass...

I don't follow Esquire or most of these bands, but I was surprised to find that the first track on the Portugal The Man album (on a major label) is pretty decent Glam-Bowie-lite. Not as thrilled by the track Esquire liked. It's not at all a bad record though, and has hints of promise that will probably never get fulfilled...
