is anyone better at hi-hat patterns than Derrick May?

I'm thinking of 'it is what it is' and his remix of Dee Lite(a different one) ,Wild Times'. The only person I can think of that might be is Timbaland, who else do you think, and if possible try and type their best pattern/passage.

the quick answer to the question is "NO".

although timbo nearly pinches it for "one in a million" alone.

It is probably more appropriate to ask this question in the past tense. Is Derick May the Kevin Shields of Techno?

Am i the only one that hates Timbaland hi-hats?! ESPECIALLY on One In A Million, its feking annoying

Derrick May is awesome w/ hates - "Beyond the Dance" is so intense for me.

and Timbaland's "One In A Million" was the most groundbreaking record of the 90's (except for maybe "Soon")

but the high-hat award goes to Class Action - "Weekend (Larry Levan's Weekend mix). It's on the 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' book - soundtrack.

Best Derrick May hi-hats--"The Beginning"

whoops!, Mr May is no Hater, but he's definitely a player hatter. (i.e. excuse typo and bad pun - thanks).

observe: prince's hi hat programming on the time's 777-9311

I was always endlessly fascinated by the hi-hat playing on "Down in the Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal. At times it sounds sloppy, but it's *perfect* sloppy, so I concluded that it was performed like that on purpose.

My favourite hi-hats: Green Velvet's "The Stalker", Dem 2's "Destiny". Detroit techno *does* have lovely hi-hats generally, but I think its a genre thing and not something that's specific to May (though he is exemplary).

joseph modeliste / luke vibert / john french / billy cobham / bogdan raczynski.

listen to "icon"(montage mix) - d.may really does stand out, even in detroit. carl craig is also particularly ace: "at les", "elements".

michael w., Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and reese "rock to the beat", atkins "the chase", pullen "silent phase", larkin "tedra". shit, yeah,"TEDRA"!....you're right, it's a genre thing...

michael w., Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Lovely hi hats are a trait of Detroit, and tracks like At Les and Icon are very tastefully done. The May tracks I mentioned earlier stand out because the hi hats dominate and have this ridiculously energetic hyper funky feel that to me is fucking mindblowing.

By the way when I said try and type their best pattern/passage, I meant like tsk-chka-tsss-tk-tk-tk-tss, and shit like that.

Slightly different territory from DM, but in D&B I always thought this was one of A-Sides' strengths.
