1. Beyonce - Ring The Alarm - Freemasons Remix

2. Missy Elliott - Lose Control - Thin White Duke Remix

3. Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart - David Morales Remix

4. Faith Evans - Mesmerised - Freemasons Remix

Tim F, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

5. Ciara, Deuces (Nguzunguzu Remix)

jho'sh? "ice cr?m" jackson (The Reverend), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

NB. I'm mostly thinking unashamed "club track" rather than say 2-step/funky/dubstep (mostly because I could list stuff in the first two groups for days and days) etc but feel free to bend rules

Tim F, Friday, 20 May 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

:( that is a huge chunk of the dance music I like (at least most of the dance music I like that would remix r&b joints)

6. Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight (Quentin Harris Space Battle Homo Remix)

The Reverend, Friday, 20 May 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

:( that is a huge chunk of the dance music I like (at least most of the dance music I like that would remix r&b joints)

Absolutely. This thread is tracking something rather more rare.

Excellent choice for no. 6! And in that vein:

7. Jill Scott - Whatever (Quentin Harris Remix)

(as good as it is the Theo Parrish remix of "Slowly Surely" is not in the spirit of this thread)

YES

1. Beyonce - Ring The Alarm - Freemasons Remix

such a rong choice to kick off such a great thread ;_;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yHrvuWeaGI

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 06:39 (fourteen years ago)

are there any examples of the rarest group of all - turning an r&b original that's actually bad or middling into something great? because most of these originals are pretty stellar too tbh

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 06:40 (fourteen years ago)

also just to pre-empt more rongness, i had better NOT see that solange/freemasons remix up in here

11. Chaka Khan - Love You All My Lifetime (Love Suite Opus Mix)

The Brainwasher, Friday, 20 May 2011 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

12. J. Holiday - Bed (Seamus Haji Remix)

taking ilxers out with a flurry of butthurt (Noodle Vague), Friday, 20 May 2011 07:50 (fourteen years ago)

12. All Saints - Chick Fit (Kissy Sell Out's Excellent Adventure Remix)

One of the best remixes of the 00s, period.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 May 2011 10:15 (fourteen years ago)

It's just an incredible odyssey of various electro and d&b breaks, but it doesn't loose track of the original tune either.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 May 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

6. Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight (Quentin Harris Space Battle Homo Remix)

This is the ultimate answer to the question, there basically isn't a better example at all. It's monstrous.

Matt DC, Friday, 20 May 2011 10:54 (fourteen years ago)

the switch remix of p diddy & xtina's "tell me" is a good example, cuz the original really isn't that special but the remix is a monster. (but the full version of it, with the astonishing acapella moment, isn't on youtube.)

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

13. Kelly Rowland - Work (Freemasons Mix)

(This is SURELY the best Freemasons remix)

Matt DC, Friday, 20 May 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

14. Kelis - Trick Me (Basement Jaxx remix)

Think there needs to be a hidden house diva lurking within the original, which is why the Jennifer Hudson/Quentin Harris track works so well. One of the annoying things about the last Kelis album for me was the way it cut the corners of this process.

Matt DC, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

xpost to Lex, love that switch remix!

Great thread. There are a lot of great David Morales mixes of Mariah Carey tracks, don't know which to pick.

15. Usher - OMG (Almighty remix)

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:09 (fourteen years ago)

13. Kelly Rowland - Work (Freemasons Mix)

(This is SURELY the best Freemasons remix)

but again, definitely not superior to the original!

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

6. Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight (Quentin Harris Space Battle Homo Remix)

omg this iss amazing

all the way bernt up (tpp), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

tiefschwarz remix of missy's "teary eyed" IS superior to the original and, again, not on youtube

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

The only youtube of Spotlight I can find is the "Quentin Harris Dark Collage Club Mix" - is the "Space Battle Homo Remix" much different?

I am using your worlds, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)

(i think that's one and the same)

all the way bernt up (tpp), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)

judging the epic homo space battle that is the last 3 mins

all the way bernt up (tpp), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it's one and the same, 'Space Battle Homo' is just a phrase I made up to describe it a few years ago. Happy it caught on in some way.

The Freemasons remixes of "Work" and "I Decided" are more dance-pop than club remix IMO. I'm thinking more 8 min+ space battle homo material.

Tim F, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

arrrrrrrrrrrg! thanks tim

Not r&b but this was my exact thoughts on hearing the Basement Jaxx remix of Adele's "Cold Shoulder"

one of the finest youtube montages ever:

My first thought was the Angie Stone, though the Pound Boys Stoneface Bootleg Mix rather than the Hex Hector one.

Loved the early 00s trend of two-step remixes - Bills Bills Bills, Thong Song, It's Not Right But It's OK, etc.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

Jodeci - "Feenin" (LTJ Bukem mix)

henry s, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

because it's otherwise vanished from the internet, the tiefschwarz remix of missy's "teary eyed" - http://www.sendspace.com/file/yq8ct8

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

That reminds me - Tiefschwarz remix of Kelis's Trick Me is classic.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 20 May 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

1. Beyonce - Ring The Alarm - Freemasons Remix

such a rong choice to kick off such a great thread ;_;

Don't get me wrong, I love the OG, but I think the remix is actually the finest exhibition of Beyonce's sheer implacability ever.

Tim F, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

it def is. best tiefschwarz remix of all was probably "kinda new", though that doesn't belong here. they were a bit godlike for a while there.

xp

that similarly vanished diddy/xtina/switch remix: http://www.sendspace.com/file/hypk4v

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

(Really really hate that you made me google the phrase "Quentin Harris Space Battle Homo Remix" before realising that was not the official title.) #gullible

Karen D. Tregaskin, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

it's such a perfect descriptor that i forgot it wasn't the actual title until someone else brought that up

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

Best Tiefschwarz mix is Feels Like Love, which still gets played out occasionally nowadays. The Missy one is good, although if I remember correctly there's not very much Missy actually in it?

Matt DC, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

Strikes me that there should be a load of Diddy that qualifies here but I can't actually think of any.

Matt DC, Friday, 20 May 2011 13:04 (fourteen years ago)

Like the Jason Nevins/Run DMC and Junkie XL/Elvis remixes, this is one of the rare cases where a remix was a bigger hit than the original.

Siegbran, Sunday, 22 May 2011 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

Wtf maybe in your country

D-40, Sunday, 22 May 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

Don't want to imply that Bring The Noise is/was in any way obscure or anything, but I don't think it was even released as a single internationally. So bigger hit everywhere in the world except at home - good enough for me.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

I love the original but I wouldn't call it "untouchable"

(won't lie that part of my appreciation of this remix is that more syncopation always appeals to me)

Tom Skerritt Mustache Ride (DJP), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

Have NEVER been able to find it, but I really like the Roy Davis Jr. remix of Mary J. Blige's "Deep Inside."

weirdly i've never liked that version. the bassline lacks the punch of the original, the warbling acoustic feel of it always bothers me.
