king's lead hat or by this river, probably.

tylerw, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

I love how the album begins on a manic high before crawling into some deep murky pool where you watch the sun glint on the surface.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

by this river or maybe julie with... which sounds like something out of final fantasy vii

sonderangerbot, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

i loved how on this and another green world the musicians for each track were listed. it made me want to check out the other bands/music the session players were involved with

Brian Eno has the ability to make the good parts of GYBE! songs into a couple of minutes of genius ambient music.

"backwater" or "spider and i" or "here he comes" or "by this river" or "julie with" cannot decide. a favorite album for sure

'Through Hollow Lands'...perfect evocation of a steam train ride through the English Countryside...

Spider and I

nakhchivan, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

these are all pretty much perfect as individual pieces. personally I always play "Here He Comes" when I wanna hear something off of this, but the first two tracks are a great start and obviously K.L.H. i.e "Talking Heads" is a serious jam.

sleeve, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

by this river is, maybe, the prettiest song ever.

this is hard. side 1 is one of my favorite side 1s ever, then side 2 is one of my favorite side 2s ever! maybe i'll vote for 'no one receiving'

I sang "Backwater" to my niece a few weeks ago -- it's got a perfect "Sesame Street"/Dr. Seuss air.

Side 2 is simply stunning throughout.

"By This River" for me too.

Euler, Friday, 20 May 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

by this river obviously, but julie with her open blouse is as strong a contender as one could be.

"Julie With" for how it insinuates itself in, and for being the most relaxed song in the world.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 21 May 2011 03:38 (fourteen years ago)

"By This River" forever, though I adore this whole album.

WmC, Saturday, 21 May 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

through hollow lands. the title fits perfectly to the music. what i love most about it is that it does not ask for my attention. there is no melody or rhythm jumping at me. it just flows. it is self-sufficient music.

hmm I think the last time I heard this I was most infatuated with No One Receiving because of the synth arragement

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Monday, 23 May 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

but it might of been Backwater as well

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Monday, 23 May 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

Very atypically I felt a desire to listen to this on the way to work today, mostly skipping over the really slow cuts. Today King's Lead Hat wins no contest.

there's a really nice cover of "By This River" on the new Ryuichi Sakamoto/Alva Noto album

totally makes sense that Sakamoto's a Roedelius fan

I must have a similar vocal range to Eno as I find it very satisfying to sing along with "By This River" whilst I'm cooking, reading the paper etc. Sadly, my voice is nothing like as sonorous as his, but I do enjoy grasping for the low notes.

So yeah, "By This River" gets my vote. Always loved the way it's used in The Son's Room as well.

Bill A, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 08:03 (fourteen years ago)

"backwater" or "spider and i" or "here he comes" or "by this river" or "julie with" cannot decide.

Agree with this list. "Spider" reminds me of Syd though, so I'm going to vote for that.

Me too. Such a great album, though, could easily have picked any of at least six tracks.

There were six of us but now there are three
I almost voted for Backwater because I have sang that one the most, but voted By This River for enduring beauty.

Do many rate this album over AGW, TTM or HCTWJ? BAAS is great but Eno has a lot of great albs.

truth to boredom (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

I always mentally file it with HCTWJ because the songs are so overtly songy. The quieter stuff is in a different category for listening purposes. In fact, I dubbed HCTWJ and BaAS together, so I've always felt (incorrectly) that they are alike or united in some way because I almost always listened to them consecutively.

It does kinda make sense, though, the glammy songs give way to the tight pop songs on the first side of this album, which then gives way to the quieter, more atmospheric songs at the end.

Garyln (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

I file this with AGW as my favourite of those 4 albums. It seems most similar to AGW to me, but I've probably heard those 2 way more than the other 2.

four years pass...

What time signature is "Through Hollow Lands"?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 4 January 2016 00:55 (nine years ago)

the time signature of awesome

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 January 2016 02:00 (nine years ago)

My guess: 14/4 but I swear there's a 13 count in there somewhere?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 4 January 2016 02:18 (nine years ago)

This is my winter album I always come back to. In the 80s I had the cassette in my car played it til it became warped and tangled.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 03:40 (nine years ago)

three years pass...

I’m listening to this right now and idly checked for a poll. Sad how poorly Backwater did here.

i can't stand that shit

brimstead, Monday, 14 January 2019 20:17 (six years ago)

you could be forgiven thinking that making a half-hour long playlist of all four versions of 'by this river' on Roedelius' Archive 73-78 would be overkill

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 00:55 (six years ago)

no, I would not forgive such a person
