The new Sugababes' album's been out a whole week now and there's not been one thread on it. (I will refrain from comparisons with *nt*rp*l). Has anyone else bought it or downloaded it? What do they think? I have a fearful feeling that its general solidness may stop anyone saying anything that interesting about it but let's have a go.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe the lack of discussion is because albums by modern pop acts seem a bit unneccessary? This seems a bit unfair but when I think of the ones I like best - Britney's first, Kylie's latest, 5ive's last, the Sugababes' previous - it's still really the singles that get the most play off them (actually this is true of almost ALL the albums I like, so maybe what I'm thinking is that albums are a bit unneccessary). The last Sugababes CD was a bit of an exception to this because their choices for singles were so weird, apart from "Overload".

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally, I'm waiting for you to say something about the Betty Boo best of, Tom.

zebedee, Monday, 2 September 2002 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've downloaded - it just sounds like it could have been done by any prefab group. All the column inches about how "different" they were seems to have come to nothing.

"Freak Like Me" and "Round Round" are terrific singles, and "Supernatural" is extra-good, but it's all a little too perfect, yes, as Tom says, "solid". Having nothing as touchingly vulnerable as "Run For Cover" or as sweet as "Soul Sound" makes it a bit of a letdown. I plan to pretty much delete all but those three songs and bung it on a mix disc or something. A whole album from them does seem unnecessary.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 2 September 2002 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well they are different but the differences are more minor than the column inches suggested.

Zebedee I've not played it yet! I have been working and not in the mood for flighty pop which would let me dream of escape. Also I wanted to work out why I didn't like another record I was expecting to.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know if/when it's coming out in the US? Wondering if I should just wait...

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 2 September 2002 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't get it yet, but it surely can't be worse than One Touch.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 September 2002 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Not actually about the album, but can I just point out Keisha smiles an awful lot? I don't know what the not smiling rumors are about.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 September 2002 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's much more like One Touch than the reviews - positive and negative - have suggested. i.e. soft soul/R&B with poppy hooks and everyday-life lyrics.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Edward O, nothing as good as 'Run For Cover'. They've been overstyled, musically and visually. They sound like any pop act trying to come across as 'edgy' (why Sugababes? Why? You had so much more of an edge before) and they look like the smug girls at school who would always bitch about everyone.

Anna, Monday, 2 September 2002 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be a Sham 69 thread.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 2 September 2002 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them live on Saturday at Creamfields, they were pretty good however it was just a case of waiting for the singles. The new one has lost a scary amount of weight, I really thought, though this has nothing to do with the album.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 September 2002 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me who noticed that it has the same title as Tricky's previous album? Which is obv totally irrelevant unless you're a pathetic trainspottah like uh me.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 2 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't get it yet, but it surely can't be worse than One Touch.

Im willing for a fierciful FITE over this. I simply adore One Touch

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 2 September 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Another listen reveals it to be a cracking good album! Well done Sugababes!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

''I thought this was going to be a Sham 69 thread.''

I thought it was going to be a thread abt Tricky.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 September 2002 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty good, but roughly half the tracks seem too much like filler to me, and there is a very dodgy lyric somewhere, something like

We're virgin, vigin sexy (sexy)
If you want me, just text me (text me)

Which is kinda funny, but seems a bit clunky as well - you know, like something an exec would think would be something the kids would dig. Is it the worst lyric this year?

Also in the title track (I assume it's the title track as I don't have the tracklisting, but it has 'Angels with Dirty Faces' as one of the lyrics) and they say their names before each line, and 'Heidi' just seems out of place.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 2 September 2002 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to it right now...

A r r r r g h ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! I forgot the Sting sample. N o o o o o o o o o ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 2 September 2002 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That lyric is DREADFUL yes.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

We're virgin, vigin sexy (sexy)
If you want me, just text me (text me)

This is exactly my problem with some of the album. For all the bluster about how they write their own songs, I can't believe they either wrote this line or thought it was good. I mean, come on!

No. I take that back. I can't believe they wrote that whole SONG or thought it was good. It's bloody terrible, embarassing and doesn't suit them at all. They should leave crap like that to Atomic Kitten, who do that sort of thing much better.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There hasnt been much wrote-their-own-songs hype this time and it doesn't matter if they did or didn't anyway. The point is someone in "Team Sugababes" should have spotted that clunker.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Having previously been very critical of the Sugarbabes (they seemed to me to typify lower, parochial UK pop standards compared to the US), I have to admit 'Round Round' is excellent (the previous one was ok but left me cold). The 'surly' image and limited dance steps are all making sense now with this single and I think the US could go for this. There was a thing about them on C4 on Sunday and they showed some r&b-ish track off the album which was ok but won't help them over there as it would compare unfavourably with higher standard homegrown stuff

David (David), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Still making up my mind about the album, but know that "Stronger" is a quite fantastic song, with that brilliant minor-to-augmented-major chord change in the chorus. As far as desolate R&B ballads go, though, nothing else this year touches "Drunk" by Tweet; a lament with which to turn out the lights on the world.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Why no discussion of the Sting karaoke?

Graham (graham), Sunday, 6 October 2002 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha the Sting karaoke thing rules.

The problem with the Sugarbabes is they always deliver a first single that raises expectations so enormously high. Compared to "Overload" and "Freak Like Me", both "One Touch" and "Angels With Dirty Faces" seem a bit, erhm, faceless. I mean, it's a nice little record- nifty hooks, good beats, catchy all around, but it just doesn't have the *attitude* of "Freak Like Me"- the sexuality seems forced, the good girl stuff banal ("Breathin' Easy" is pretty sweet in the begining tho.)

Btw, speaking as one of The Kids (TM), I hafta say you guys are seriously overestimating the good taste of today's youth- girls in my class went crazy for stuff much more embarassing than "Virgin Sexy" (they're all into Nu Metal and R&B now, tho- Pop's pretty much played out in my school, even the "dangerous" Sugarbabes type)

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 6 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello's OTM re: "Drunk", BTW

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 6 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

...but have to disagree with him about "Stronger", which is my least favourite cut on the LP.

I'm rather annoyed to discover that the euro version I bought has three fewer tracks on it than the UK version (I'm missing: "Just don't like this", "No man no cry" and "Round Round (alternate mix)" Are any of these essential?)

However, the plus side of this is that "Shape" and "Switch" follow eachother in the LP sequence (one of the best one-two punches on any LP I've heard this year). Indeed, the second half (6-11, "Side 2" if you like) on my version is pretty much impeccable.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Virgin Sexy" sounds great on that new cosmetic ad!

I love this album more and more. NB Graham I bought the first Atomic Kitten album on your recommendation last week.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes it does Tom.

(Ooh wow, the Repackaged version?)

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the one with "Right Now..." and "Back Then..." and no Kerry.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Was "Switch" a single? I don't remember it, but it seems to leap out after a few listens.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

No, but it should have been. They released a gazillion singles off this album and for some reason one of those was "Shape". "Switch" is one of my favourites - so bouncy!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

The album is still all bout "Supernatural", which is the missing link between Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Brandy's "What About Us?" but BETTER.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised you rate "Supernatural" so high Edward!

Criminally underrated cuts off AWDF - "More Than A Million Miles", "Blue", "Switch" and the title track.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Why, Lex? I do like to shake my booty some, if only in my own bedroom.

More Than A Million Miles is good, yes. Switch is a bit nondescript, but better than No Man Nor Cry which it comes after. The FLM B-side "Breathe Easy" was good too.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I prefer "Borstal Breakout".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh I know you like to shake your booty, but I'd've thought "Switch" was more ideal for that...

The tough-as-nuts beats together with the laidback harmonising on "Angels With Dirty Faces" are just gorgeous.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago)

"More than a Million Miles" sounds like an R&B response to glitch-hop - I like the way that the annoyingly familiar sample's feet never touch the ground through the whole thing.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I have to relisten to this, as I could never get past FLM's album version - dreadful mix.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it is, isn't it? Isn't the version on the video the Richard X version? Why on earth did they post-produce and fuck it up?

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I like the album FLM - the huge-ass drums!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago)
