Leaving out The Beatles from this year is perhaps even crazier. Still a wealth of great songs to choose from though.

Missing "I Feel Fine", several "Hard Day's Night" tracks and the first two Supremes singles. Amongst other stuff.

Still some great songs. Torn between Dionne Warwick's greatest ever moment and yet another Phil Spector vote.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

(Although "Leader Of The Pack" is of course really great too)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

Great selection, but it's "Walk On By" by a couple of lengths.

WmC, Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Sam Cooke

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure. Leaning towards Kinks or Animals, but maybe Sam Cooke too...

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself murders me in that version. another cretin vote

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

Also seriously missing "Oh Pretty Woman" and "It's Over" here. Going for Righteous Brothers anyways.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

Sam Cooke, no question.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

Girl From Ipamena

President Keyes, Saturday, 21 May 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

For me it's between Jacques Brel, Sam Cooke and Martha & The Vandellas.

Fear Moldova and the Nation of Leaners (seandalai), Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

"The Girl from Ipanema" is another part of the world suddenly claiming everything.

timellison, Saturday, 21 May 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

Sam Cooke, no question.

Even though I think the Beatles' greatest singles are a year away, leaving them off a '64 list is silly...From the list I'd go with "Walk on By," followed by the Righteous Brothers. Other favourites: the Beach Boys' "All Summer Long," Bessie Banks' original "Go Now," Brenda Holloway's "Every Little Bit Hurts," Earl-Jean's original "I'm Into Somethin' Good," Gene Pitney's "It Hurts to Be in Love," Horace Silver's "Song for My Father," Lesley Gore's "Look of Love," the Murmaids' "Bull Talk," the Rockin' Berries' "He's in Town," the Rolling Stones' "It's All Over Now," the Searchers' "Don't Throw Your Love Away," and Shirley Matthews' "Big Town Boy"...I'm sure I missed a couple. (Promise I won't do any more MIA lists beyond two or three songs--starting in '65, there'd just be too much.)

Getz/Gilberto

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 21 May 2011 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

"I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" is an all time classic vocal performance, and it's got a great melody too. Clearly, this is missing a lot, but there's a ton of classics on this list as is. Might be tempted to change to Sam Cooke or Getz/Gilberto later, but Dusty seems like the right choice here.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, the biggest lack here is no Beatles tune, but the glorious "California Girls".

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

Should note that I really like that Jacques Brel tune as well, though it's a bit below the actual contenders for a vote.

Couple other missing ones: "Goldfinger", "She's Not There", "Baby I Need Your Loving". Wouldn't be crazy to throw a Mary Poppins tune in there either.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, "Goldfinger" is, like, the ultimate Bond tune.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

"California Girls" is summer of '65.

clemenza, Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Should note that I really like that Jacques Brel tune as well, though it's a bit below the actual contenders for a vote.

Yeah, there are other Brel songs I would vote for over anything on this list, but in the end I went for Sam Cooke.

Fear Moldova and the Nation of Leaners (seandalai), Saturday, 21 May 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, "California" is 65 of course. May even be in the list there (haven't looked closely through, but it will be a very solid list)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 21 May 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

what is this:

Mina: E Se Domani

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mina_%28singer%29

timellison, Monday, 23 May 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

The Mina song is an Italo-ballad, with jazzy touches, some orchestration, and a vocal that goes from soft to full-blooded passionate & back again... something Italian singers seem to have a knack for, but Mina is one of the best.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

Not a lot of talk here, but I guess the results were kinda expected. There weren't so many outspoken supporters of Sam Cooke, but it was kind of the song I expected to win when I posted the poll, so no surprise there, really. Personally I prefer the more tuneful earlier Cooke-material, but "A Change Is Gonna Come" is by no means a bad song, and particularly the lyrics were important as an early example of socially conscious soul lyrics.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

i missed this but god bless u person who voted for john jacob niles

Midworst (jjjusten), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

Brel perhaps never sneers better than in Amsterdam. Voted Sam, Getz/Gilberto is an album to me.

For one throb of the (Michael White), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

I feel that Getz's best moment is the "Jazz Samba" album from a couple years earlier. "Desafinado" is his crowning moment.
