contenderizer, Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

Re the discussion upthread, Pete Townshend invented the power pop term, but The Who were more known as maximum R&B. They were probably proto-powerpop though.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

Turbonegro's music is often described as "deathpunk".

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

(Oops. Already mentioned, I see)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Gary Holton ("Auf Wiedersehen Pet") and Norwegian rocker Casino Steel (ex- The Boys) briefly formed sort of a countryrock duo in the early 80s. As the duo was half-Norwegian and Norway-based, they decided to describe their music as rig rock, also to prevent writers from coming up with genre descriptions for their music.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 22 May 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 22 May 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

Hard to think of the Who as power pop, really, maybe two or three songs.

"I Can See For Miles" is the proto powerpop tune. But I agree they have done a lot of stuff before and, not least, after that one that was not. I guess "I Can't Explain" is also kinda powerpop like though (at least it was a major influence on "Open My Eyes" by Nazz, which no doubt was very much a powerpop song.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 23 May 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

also pretty much any contemporary band that considers itself power pop is probably highly influenced by The Who, which I think validates Townshend's coinage pretty well

Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

I always heard "Substitute" as the #1 powerpop template myself.

xhuxk, Monday, 23 May 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

The Townshend quote, IIRC, was that The Who played "Pop songs/music with the power and intensity of Rock and Roll" and called their hybrid "Power Pop". The term would lay dormant though until the 70s.

Handjobs for a sport (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 23 May 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

I Can See For Miles seems like the missing link between Eight Miles High & Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower

if I were looking for power-pop prototypes I'd probably first hit up Can't Explain, then the Byrds' I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better and/or Beatles' Drive My Car

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 May 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

Dick Dale invented surf music.

And the power-poppiest Who song is "The Kids Are Alright"...

Lee626, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Short-lived Norwegian popsters Analogue Orchestra named their music "spectropop". In reality, they were probably much more influenced by Air than by Phil Spector though
Tried searching for a Youtube example but couldn't find them there. But they are on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/artist/0jldXaVSZmEXCPJtWzGxtL

Nick Lowe - Pure Pop for Now People

(I the term "pure pop" as a genre tag or record review cliche, though. it makes me thing of white nationalism, and it doesn't help that it's usually applied to some of the whitest music ever made)

gtforia estfufan (unregistered), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

"I don't like the term," should say

gtforia estfufan (unregistered), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

Wait, people don't really think the tag "pigfuck" was invented specifically for Jesus Lizard, do they? (Or that they were the first band it was applied to, or that they invented it themselves? Because they didn't.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

Also had never heard "P-Funk" applied to later hip-hop artists, but what do I know. (Are they just supposed to be rappers who sampled Parliament/Funkadelic, or what? I guess EPMD have a famous Zapp sample, if that counts, but their Bob Marley and Kool & the Gang seem just as important.)

Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock

xhuxk, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

Wait, people don't really think the tag "pigfuck" was invented specifically for Jesus Lizard, do they? (Or that they were the first band it was applied to, or that they invented it themselves? Because they didn't.)

hah, realized after i posted that it's equally applied to big black, killdozer, butthole surfers, flipper etc. etc.—not really the best example. i think i just really wanted to say "pigfuck" in this thread

I've heard "Meat Rock" applied to Ted Nugent's music many times over the years, but not by Ted himself. (I've also heard "Meathead" applied to Ted Nugent many times over the years.)

Tony Joe White - Swamp Rock (maybe; I think)

henry s, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

Orange Juice - The Sound of Young Scotland

(see also Josef K/Aztec Camera)

Actually, the term used by the Postcard Label to describe that Glaswegian indie pop sound was Perfect Pop.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

The Sound of Young Scotland was a riff off of an old Motown slogan:

http://i51.tinypic.com/29n8eop.jpg

a lot of Postcard singles actually said The Sound of Young Scotland right on the label and sleeve, and it was later used as the title of a documentary and a bootleg collection of Postcard singles. I don't know where the term "Perfect Pop" comes from but doubt it was a Postcard thing.
