was thinking about how many times i saw this studio in the liner notes of indie rock albums in the mid-'90s and decided to look up stuff on them, was surprised to learn both that they did platinum White Stripes and Modest Mouse albums later on and that the building burned down in 2005 (although it looks like they're still going, presumably in another location).

voted Pacer, which I still f'in love; there's a lot of albums on here I should've heard already (Kim Deal-produced GBV, Gories, Washing Machine) but haven't...

Voting for the Grifters' Crappin' You Negative, which is one of my all-time favorite albums recorded anywhere.

a Box Top reunion album just seems so out of place on a list of mostly indie and alt-rock stuff. wonder if it's any good.

apparently Chilton was a very early client of the studio when it was run out of a garage in the '80s

would be cool to also try to compile all the songs on these records that feature pedal steel guitar by Doug Easley, always enjoy those:

Pavement - "Father To A Sister Of Thought"
Cat Power - "Taking People"
Two Dollar Guitar - "Song For A Dead Friend," "Speed," "Wilding," and "White Ape"

Señor Smang (some dude), Thursday, 26 May 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

guess these are my favorites:

1. The Gories - I Know You Fine, But How You Doin' (1994)
2. Sonic Youth - Washing Machine (1995)
3. Guided By Voices - Under The Bushes Under The Stars (1995)
4. Pavement - Wowee Zowee (1995)
5. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells (2001)
6. The Grifters - Crappin' You Negative (1994)
7. Silver Jews - Starlite Walker (1994)
8. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Extra Width (1993)
9. The Grifters - Ain't My Lookout (1996)

looking good c 93-96

I was a total indie-rock nurd during those early 90s years. These are my two favorites out of the list, but I like a whole lot more. Both of these were a pretty good hit to the noggin' at the time.

The Grifters - Crappin' You Negative
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Extra Width

That said, the early Grifters stuff wasn't all done in their studio though as some of that is 4-track and 8-track stuff they took into there to finish off. The one left off is the Eureka IV ep by the Grifters. That thing is perfect. They probably should have recorded a couple of more tunes and just did a whole album, but I am partial to that group as I thought they kicked most of their contemporaries asses. They meant a lot more to me than Pavement, Palace, Sebadoh, etc.

yeah i should note that several of these albums were only partially recorded at Easley (besides the Grifters: JSBX, the Amps, Modest Mouse, GBV, Buckley, probably others).

Señor Smang (some dude), Thursday, 26 May 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

Add Wowee Zowee to that list.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 26 May 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Señor Smang (some dude), Thursday, 26 May 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Damn, this is a tough call:

Silver Jews - Starlite Walker (1994)
Wilco - A.M. (1995)
Pavement - Wowee Zowee (1995)

That Amps record is great, too.

missed this!

i tried to interview Easley for a documentary project in college. i initially just showed up at the studio after failed attempts at reaching him by phone. he was cagey at first (apparently the BBC had been all over him trying to do a Jeff Buckley thing), but we ending up shooting shit for about 2 hours. really, really great dude. i asked him about coming back with camera and gear and talking about some of the things we had just covered but he seemed so incredibly uncomfortable w/ the idea i didn't have the heart to push it.

I'm 11 and I love Gay Dad. Today's music is so formulaic its appalling. (will), Thursday, 2 June 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)
