Pollin' Tracks Spo-Dee-O-Dee! ILM does the 1950s—NOMINATIONS THREAD

Message Bookmarked

There was a fair amount of discussion during the 20th Century poll last year about how the 1950s is an incredibly rich decade for music but suffers the misfortune of getting trapped in a blind spot when it comes to discussion on music of the modern era. Out of 125 top results, only a very few were recorded prior to 1960. We chose to give the 50s their due someday. That someday is here now.

Between now and the end of Saturday June 25th, do some exploration of the decade and nominate those tracks that deserve recognition. When you've made your decisions, please post your 25 nominated tracks in this thread using the ARTIST - TRACK format. Voting will be done via email after the close of nominations (the details of which we can discuss here over the next few weeks).

If you're at a loss for ideas, the lists at RYM are always helpful:
Whole decade "top" list: http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/1950s
Whole decade "esoteric" list: http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/esoteric/single/1950s

(There are also lists in both categories for every individual year of the decade.)

For a broader and less detailed overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950s_in_music

(There are also entries there for individual years in the decade.)

Don't just focus on rock and pop—why would you? There's jazz, blues, country, gospel, Broadway, folk, etc. If you're not an expert, turn it into a learning experience.

Awesome idea! Bravo for doing this... Stoked to get turned on to some cool stuff. Will mull over my own collection shortly...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 29 May 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh, excellent news. Will have to give this some thought...

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

I did this really quick--just went through my media library, then added three or four extra that I never got around to digitizing. It's quite arbitrary, but these are the ones I didn't give a second thought to. You've already listed the Flamingos, so I knocked them off my list, which still leaves 26--don't begrudge it to me, J.F. I will inevitably be back at some point to add a handful I missed.

Elvis Presley: “Mystery Train” (1954)
Nolan Strong & the Diablos: “Since You’re Gone” (1954)
Celia Cruz: “Mi Soncito” (1955)
Five Keys: “Close Your Eyes” (1955)
Chips: “Rubber Biscuit” (1956)
Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers: “The ABC’s of Love” (1956)
Johnny Cash: “I Walk the Line” (1956)
Ray Price: “You Done Me Wrong” (1956)
Cellos: “Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am the Japanese Sandman)” (1957)
Diamonds: “The Stroll” (1957)
Little Richard: “The Girl Can’t Help It” (1957)
Miller Sisters: “Got You on My Mind” (1957)
Bo Diddley: “Who Do You Love?” (1958)
Bobby Freeman: “Do You Want to Dance” (1958)
Buddy Holly: “Look at Me” (1958)
Dale Hawkins: “La-Do-Dada” (1958)
Dee & the Kool Gents: “When I Call on You” (1958)
El Dorados: “Lights Are Low” (1958)
Everly Brothers: “Problems” (1958)
Jerry Butler & the Impressions: “For Your Precious Love” (1958)
Michael Holliday: “The Story of My Life” (1958)
Pastels: “So Far Away” (1958)
Chuck Berry: “Almost Grown” (1959)
Louvin Brothers: “You’re Learning” (1959)
Miles Davis: “Flamenco Sketches” (1959)
Sheriff & the Ravels: “Shombalor” (1959)

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

Since I'm copy/pasting these into a spreadsheet, it would be super nice if everyone would follow that ARTIST - TRACK format I listed in the opening post. Thanks.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

Hot noms!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

I went pretty quickly & thus with the obvious but good grief, this nom list could be ridiculously long & great even with just obvious noms.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh, before I forget! Would definitely have voted for this one in the 20C poll, but it never got nominated.

Also prefer the earlier version of Spo-Dee-O-Dee. Only found out a couple of weeks ago that the phrase was a replacement for 'motherfucker'. How naive.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, got one the wrong way around -

Lee Andrews and the Hearts - The Girl Around the Corner

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

I'll go pedant for a moment: Johnny Cash's version of "Long Black Veil" is from 1965, so not eligible for this poll. I nominated Lefty's version, the original, which is from 1959.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

Not pedantic at all, I thought I'd checked, but I hadn't obviously (or more likely checked badly). Thanks! (And apologies)

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

Pedant again! Chuck Berry's "Promised Land" is from 1965.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:41 (fourteen years ago)

I really am sorry, I'm dreadfully hungover. It's no excuse. Thank God you're on the ball.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

no prob; jet-lagging & trying to stay focused & pedantry seems to be doing the job

Okay, my first go:

Louis & Bebe Barron - Battle with the Invisible Monster
Raymond Scott - Cindy Electronium
John Cage - Williams Mix

Sorry about the formatting--I thought I was following the guidelines, but I see what you mean now. I'm glad someone added Nervous Norvus. So far I've caught one huge oversight on my list, an all-time favourite, but it's not obscure and I'm sure it'll turn on on someone's list sooner or later.

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

xp to outdoor miner: "You Send Me" had been nominated just before you did it, so you can have one more back.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

Couple things...

So far, 191 tracks have been nominated.

If the group likely has a "The" at the beginning of their name, please include it. That'll make it easier for people to find it in the master list (I've been adding them where they're missing so far).

György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, and Otto Luening--is that who Don McLean meant by "the father, son, and the holy ghost"?

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, so I'm just thinking out loud here, but the last couple days of nominating I'll probably open it up with a few more for everyone just to make sure we don't leave out anything important. That (mostly) worked pretty well for the 20C poll.

Also, I haven't talked to seandalai about helping out with the voting (he's not around much anymore), so I may end up tabulating manually. That means no 100-song ballots. Probably something manageable like 40. Not expecting turnout for this to be as big as other decade polls and definitely not the year-end polls, so hopefully tabulating manually won't eat up ALL my time. :)

Elvis Presley - Hound Dog

I'm guessing this hasn't been nominated because Big Mama Thornton's version is already up, but it should be there. The greatest b-side of all time?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

emil.y, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, so like...there are only about 46 hours left to nominate. Still don't quite have 500 songs yet, so if you can think of anything you or someone else might vote for that isn't already on the list, put it here!

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Friday, 24 June 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

thats more than 25, so oops. this took longer than expected, so i can whittle it down tomorrow. plus i have to make sure a few of these dont spill over on one side or the other of the 50's

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Friday, 24 June 2011 07:10 (fourteen years ago)

hah ignore the stars, those were my first go to ones and i wanted to mark them so i didnt get rid of them later. IGNORE.

Stanley Tunechi (Spectrist), Friday, 24 June 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

I'd also like to nominate "Blue In Green" by Miles Davis, because I am certain others will just go for the faster tracks, but that beautiful ballad is actually the highlight of the "Kind of Blue" album.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 24 June 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

This is an amazing song but I think it's actually from 1960.

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Nica's Dream

(I admit I got to like this by way of a La Sonora Poncena cover version. This performance includes the song's composer, Horace Silver.)

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 24 June 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Oh sorry, my "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" pick was nommed already, that's what I get for searching this page instead of the spreadsheet (where Johnny corrected the "marylin" typo). So please replace with

Andre Williams - Greasy Chicken

Stanley Tunechi (Spectrist), Friday, 24 June 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

A few more:

Eileen Barton - If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake

Varetta Dillard - Mercy Mr. Percy

totally forgot this, can 86 some of my other choices if need be

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Friday, 24 June 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

No need to 86 anything at this point. We're still just in the 500-600 nomination range.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Friday, 24 June 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

whoo hoo!

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Friday, 24 June 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

Frank Sinatra - I Get Along Without You Very Well

please

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Friday, 24 June 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

Chuck Berry's "School Days" should be "School Day." Great choice.

Most of my faves are covered except Christmas songs, which I'll leave out. Some Minnesota (and Mexican American) love, 2/25:

Augie Garcia - Hi Yo Silver
Kico Rangel Band featuring the Rangel Sisters - Ábrete Sésamo

Jimmy Jam's dad played on the first one, which is pretty great.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 24 June 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Other faves, 15/25:

Chuck Berry - Wee Wee Hours
Clyde McPhatter - I Can't Stand Up Alone
Duke Ellington - The Mooche
Elvis Presley - Shake, Rattle and Roll
Fats Domino - Whole Lotta Loving
Howlin' Wolf - Moanin' at Midnight
Joe Williams and Count Basie - Teach Me Tonight
Little Richard and His Band - Jenny, Jenny
Lord Kitchener - Ah Bernice
Professor Longhair - Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand
Professor Longhair - No Buts - No Maybes
The Mighty Sparrow - Short Little Shorts
Woody Guthrie - Why, Oh Why

I'm happy to go with the consensus calypso songs, but those are a couple of my favorites. As for Professor Longhair, it's not vote-splitting in my case--I'll probably actually vote for them all. "Why, Oh Why" is one of my favorite children's songs ever.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 24 June 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

This has potential to be a great ILM poll, as I have no idea what the consensus top 20 would be.

President Keyes, Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:12 (fourteen years ago)

I imagine things like "I Only Have Eyes for You" will end up in the top 20 after doing so well in the 20c poll, but outside of that it's just a big question mark.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

One thing that struck me earlier was that while many of us here may not be very familiar with the 50s, pooling what everyone knows has resulted in an interesting list of nominations. The results should be fun.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 25 June 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

So as far as voting goes, I was thinking ballots of 50 with the 100, 98, 96, 94...6, 4, 2 point arrangement, some point total for unranked ballots (haven't mathed that out yet), and then split ballots (partly ranked, partly unranked—equally distributing points out of the total left)...so, just like the 20c poll or the most recent EOY polls. Either two or three weeks of voting (does anyone have a preference for three weeks?).

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 June 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

oops here's the correct link for

The Diamonds - Little darlin'

whatever, Saturday, 25 June 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

Five hours left.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 June 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

Feel obligated somehow to get in

Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill

and especially

Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall In Love

bentelec, Sunday, 26 June 2011 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

The Beatles - All You Need Is Love

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 26 June 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

Just another 90 minutes or so. Last call!

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 26 June 2011 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven

little mushroom person (abanana), Sunday, 26 June 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)

Tried but failed to find The Peanuts' '50s output online. Would have been a good addition, but never mind. I'm sure as soon as the nominations end I'll think of twenty more great tracks.

Heino: There's Something Going On (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 26 June 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

So many great songs and artists on this list, couldn't find the part that tells how many we get to vote for, maybe that will be on the voting thread. This is gonna be even worse than that speculative fiction poll.

Heino: There's Something Going On (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 26 June 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

Can I squeeze one more in? If not no trouble.
