Taking Sides: Sex vs Drugs vs Rock'n'Roll

Here's *my* question of the day.

For rock'n'roll, read "music" by the way - it just made a snappier title.

What I'm thinking about is the UseOtherWordsPlease classic "better than sex". And I've no idea really what questions I'd spin out of that so let's throw it open.

Tom, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about "better than life, which is really saying something because without life, there is no appreciation for anything... and I'm saying THIS is better than life. THIS gives life purpose, unlike sex, which simply gives life"...?

, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not sure I totally get the question...is it taking sides sex vs music?...so I'd have to live without one? okay...I guess I choose the side of music, which would make a musical monk :)...otherwise I'd have to go and post at an "I love sex" message board!...:)

james e l, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we should turn this thread into a vote on renaming the board 'I LOVE SEX'. If you want hits, Tom...

Nick, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you want to out the straight edge fans, Tom?

Stevie Nixed, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drugs is what you do when you want to have an excuse for acting somewhat like a jerk, and daren't rely on "I wanted to, OK?"

Sex is a device for making people perpetually unhappy and insecure: "Why aren't I enjoying this as much as everyone keeps telling me I'm meant to? I must just be rubbish..."

Music is a scam perpetrated by the Clintonian ZOG Conspiracy in team with the Black Guelphs, David Icke, the EU and the Roswell Advance Landing Team, to keep us all a-babblin' about trivia while Appropriate Measures are Set in Place.

So Mr Straight Edge here prefers music (because at least I know I can trust those commanding my destiny).

mark s, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't possibly be the only person in the world who'd pick the sex and drugs.

Ally, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, you've got to remember you're largely amongst squares.

I think people readily see the shit things associated with sex and drugs (see Mark's post) wheras when you say music, people are ready to think of it as just meaning what they like.

Whereas if a psychologist held up cards with 'SEX' and 'DRUGS' on then it might trigger all sorts of negative thoughts at a gut level before I had time to think about how good they can be.

Nick, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To quote Mick Shrimpton: "Well...if there's still sex and drugs, then I can do without the rock and roll."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But wouldn't you rather even have the shit things associated with sex and possibly drugs (using drugs to include alcohol, caffiene and nicotene in my opinion, as well as the usual suspects) than listen to whatever your favorite band is non-stop, never doing the other two? How sad if the answer is no.

Ally, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, you're right Ally. To update Peter & Gordon, I don't care what they say I won't stay in a world without sex (and I don't count Houellebecq's hermaphrodite orgy utopia, either). It's even more fundamental to my conception of what the world is about than music. The fact that I spend an awful lot more of my time listening to music than I do having sex is not the point. I mean sex in the broadest sense, with all its influence on the world and its psychology. It causes me far more anguish than pleasure, but I don't care. Life's not about happiness. I'll get my hair shirt...

Oh, and when it comes down to it, I'd rather be deaf than neutered.

Nick, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sad! Ha!! The Thought Police emerge in their True Colours!!!

Repeat after me: "always gonna stay in touch/never gonna use a crutch"

[Puts on tinfoil hat and turns up walkman]

mark s, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[ ...but when they peeked back in on him five minutes later he was looking up "Houellebecq" in his A-Z... ]

mark s, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) continuation of the human race

2) destruction of the human race

3) art

this is sort of a broad question.

ethan, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

im with ally

Geordie Dreema, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark - surely you looked him up anyway to get the spelling right.

In order of preference - Music, Drugs, Sex

K-reg, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If that's OK, I'll just take the sex and the music. Y'all can have the drugs.

Patrick, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rock 'n roll IS sex & drugs. Sillies. So yous all can have ya cake and eat it too and do whatever you want with it besides.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think they're in the right order to begin with, though in a world without sex or rock and roll if I didn't have any drugs I'd pretty much kill myself and it would hurt.

Kris, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually I guess I was thinking in less all-encompassing terms when I posted this - rather than ALL of sex and ALL of rock and roll, I should have been saying "What would you rather have right now, a new CD or a shag?".

Tom, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't realise you were offering ALL of sex, Tom: obviously I'd take that, strictly in a spirit of Straight Edge martyrdom — immolating myself so as to divert doom and entrapment and unhappy delusion away from the rest of you. No, no, don't thank me — your liberation is my reward.

mark s, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can pick up a new CD whenever I want to, while my girlfriend lives in London and I'm out here in California, so to answer your question, Tom...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

right now i'd like some acid. then sex. then i'd run to get a cd.

Kevin Enas, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, in that case, sex. For the same reason (relative frequency) that I would give up sex above music in the grander scheme of things.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Replace 'rock'n'roll' with, erm, pop-music (in its broadest definition) and I'm sad enough to kiss sex and drugs goodbye.

Stevo, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do I get to choose the cd? Because if so then I'm going with that. The cool thing about sex in a relationship that does not apply to cds: 1) you don't have to go out of your way to find it; and 2) you don't have to pay for it.

Tim, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That what's so great about Napster. It makes music as good as sex in a relationship.

Nick, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not to seem like I'm not hard and all, but I've gone up to nearly 2 years being completely celibate. I've done over a year without any chemicals at all. But I don't think I've gone a single day in my life without listening to music.

kate the saint, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That doesn't make you seem hard at all.

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Up to 2 years being celibate? Man, I heard about kids growing up too fast these days, but...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was struck by Nick D's argument yesterday. It really got me thinking. I won't go into all that. But the result was that I came to think that pop and 'love' (which I think was, in a way, what ND meant by his, um, enlarged version of sex) were in a sense inseparable, or mutually generating; and therefore it was (once again) a mistake to attempt to choose between them.

I wouldn't know about drugs.

the pinefox, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, good old Ally missing the irony of the double negative.

Yer ain't not dumb, you know... ;-)

masonic boom, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good ol' Kate, missing anyone insulting her, ever.

Ally, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doz JANET want kream wither koffee ?

geordie spacer, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with Patrick, I'd take the sex then the music but no drugs thanks...

Audrey, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Ally, at least spiritually anyway...damn this acid is strong shit....woooahhh ;)
