'the black album' is a landmark work for this demo

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

xp That's pretty much what I mean, except I mean 'any white person who says they like hip-hop but wouldn't know Fat Joe from Fats Domino that is older than 22.'

Sorry. This is a result of an argument with a non-imaginary friend of mine who constantly cites his love for hip-hop despite the fact that he only buys hip-hop albums that get reviewed on Pitchfork.

Ian, you sound like you work with post-collegiate white dudes who grew up actually watching Video Music Box.

On one hand, there's nothing wrong with having a limited interest in a genre and taking recommendations on the music from a place where you take recommendations on other music too, BUT on the other hand he's constantly citing his LOVE of hip-hop when everyone knows his interest is limited and that makes him a twat.

― Darin, Friday, April 25, 2014 8:47 PM (7 minutes ago)

but no! i understood (perhaps incorrectly?) that hipsters were generally thought to be a category of people obsessed with being trendy, thus one step ahead of mass culture. at the same time, forming an identifiable culture in themselves.

they might be sneered at from inside (whiney style, like superhipster condescending to the anticon-listening habits of second-rate sheeple), or from outside (and here the term becomes more or less synonymous w/ "metrosexual" ["city folk", "college boy", "latte-sipping coastal elite" or w/e)).

katsu kittens (contenderizer), Saturday, 26 April 2014 04:45 (eleven years ago)

Darin, Saturday, 26 April 2014 05:56 (eleven years ago)

but definitely not "white trash", which presumes evaluation from a position of presumed class superiority.

no, I think people DEFINITELY use the term in this regards

Darin, Saturday, 26 April 2014 05:59 (eleven years ago)

at least as a way of distancing themselves from herd mentality that they recognize

I dunno... I'm tired and should go to bed.

Darin, Saturday, 26 April 2014 06:01 (eleven years ago)

Hating hipsters is about hating yourself. It's the final moment of the counterculture, when it recognizes itself as an even more entrenched, even more egregious exemplar of the consumerism it claimed to critique. Anti-hipster rhetoric, nine times out of ten, is an intimate recognition of hypocrisy. But it's also the repression of this recognition, making it doubly hypocritical. Perhaps.

yeah, but i was talking less abt distinctions in general than hierarchies in particular. "white trash" not only separates the self from the other, it assigns that other a much lower rank in a (presumably formal) social hierarchy. one uses this term not only to distinguish & demean, but to assert superior station. it's punching down.

i don't think "hipster" works that way. it's often nearly the opposite: a way to put down those we think are putting on airs, flaunting or trying to claim (albeit less formally) elevated status. this why is the term carries implication of pretention and elitism. it punches up.

not neccessarily tho. superhipster's self-hating usage punches down at fellow hipsters with supposedly shitty game (and treesh OTM about the semiotics here).

Hipsters, to me, always were people who, rather than just being into esoteric or hip stuff, used their knowledge of said stuff as a weapon or a status step stool. This thread made me remember a hipster at a party back in the late 90s who tried to use his possession of a Jurassic 5 ep as a trump card in the who-here-has-the-best-taste-in-hip-hop game.

Did anyone esle use "scenester" back when "hipster" wasn't a thing? Like in the 00s?

As far back at 1996. It was slightly teasing but not at all insulting -- like a "scenester" wasn't just somebody who went to a lot of rock shows, it was someone who sort of compulsively went to ALL the rock shows. Sometimes they wore gas station worker shirts with names embroidered on the front that they bought at a vintage store. As I recall, "hipster," in 1996, was a weird antique word which you would no more use seriously than you would "groovy" or "square."

Beginning how/where treesh

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 26 April 2014 14:19 (eleven years ago)

the whole point of the concept of "hipsterism" is that you can't win. nobody who cares about this would want to be the kind of person who would never be mistaken for a hipster. the crisis isn't that you don't want to be seen as "pretentious" by people insecure enough to accuse others of being pretentious; nobody really cares about that. it is that you cannot evade becoming just another demographic to be marketed to. alt is not an alternative.

très hip (Treeship), Saturday, 26 April 2014 14:23 (eleven years ago)
