Noir Desir

ages ago i saw a video of theirs on 120 minutes. i think the record is circa 93? it was quite similar to the first stereolab eps and neu obviously. the video was like those early stereolab videos a bit as well, the camera speeding along european roads from the front of a vehicle.

does anyone know what song this could be? and about Noir Desir in general?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 2 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know what the song might be, but I do know that Noir Desir are a European rock band (Either French or German, not sure which) and that they have had several records produced by Justin Sullivan of New Model Army

dionysiac, Monday, 2 September 2002 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Noir Desir are a French 80's rock band, and probably the only person in the world who still listens to them is my (american) girlfriend, who likes them because she is studying french.

fletrejet, Monday, 2 September 2002 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They had a minor hit with "Le vent nous portera" in the Netherlands this spring.

gieteling (fietswiel), Monday, 2 September 2002 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My girl-friend (she is French) likes them as well.
I never heard Stereolab/Neu! in their songs. They usually rock quite hard but also do ballads like most metal bands. I don't like the singer's voice and find most of their output rather dud. They are from Bordeaux. Somehow they remind me a little of the Scorpions though they are slightly better. They released an album not long ago. Their biggest success was 666667 Club I think from about 10 years ago. They are probably the most popular rock band in France.

it seems i am thinking of a different band?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Diabologum from Montpellier, Gareth? They sound rather arty, similar to Velvet Underground, around first album. I like them a lot. They have two singers, one male, one female. The female one sounds a little like Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab, maybe also because both are French. The only album I have is Le Goût du Jour from 1994. I think they sing in English and French though I am not so sure anymore, probably mainly French.

Fuck ilXOr! (sorry Graham, nothing personal) I just typed a piece about their latest album des Visages des Figures and how great it was. Also, I expressed my horror about the reference Alex made to the Scorpions... how/why? aaaarrrrgggghhhhh. and then the posting run aground!

All I want to say now is listen to the album (standout tracks: Le vent nous portera [compare this "wind-song" with that Scorpions' one, Alex!), Des Armes, l'Apartement) and find/make out for yourself.

one extra note: Bertrand Cantat has performed live with Sixteen Horsepower, the result of which can be heard on the latter's live album Hoarse

willem, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I exaggerated a little, Willem. But I had a Noir Desir overdose as my girl-friend always listens to them on repeat.
The 16HP live album Hoarse is very good btw. But not for Cantat. There are two great covers of Joy Division (Day of the Lords) and The Gun Club (Fire Spirit) on it.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hoarse is very good btw"

You're absolutely right Alex, and thereby you've undone your "Scorpions reference" ;-)

Have you heard 16HP's latest (Folklore) yet? truly magnificent. dry sound, intense.

willem, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No I haven't. But I gave up a little on 16HP as I found the album before (Secret South) rather dull. And again I must admit that I can only take Edwards voice in small doses.
If the new album was less melodramatic than older releases and less boring than Secret South I'd be interested.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

although i do not fully agree with you on Secret South, i think i know what you mean. (i think it's great, although a bit pompous at times (Clogger=duh/d))

if you'd slightly rewrite your last sentence it would have been a perfect review of Folklore 'cause it is as you describe it, actually.

so, now you're interested: buy it! ;-)

willem, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's some (Noir Desir) relationship with Passion Fodder as well. Theo Hakola has a dead link to them on his website.

...and Pascal Humbert of Passion Fodder is also a member of 16 Horsepower.

So I bought 666.667 Club - thought it was a bit of alright...

four years pass...

anyway, as everyone knows bernard cantat is in prison for beating his actress girlfriend to death. french 'gauchist' sabotages the effect of his influence on french activist youth and undermines his selfless campaign for the rights of 'les sans papiers' through heartless murder etc. etc.

anyway,

Great band. What I wrote about their most recent album (or the most recent one I know about) is here:

I also include their excellent 1990 album Du Ciment Sous Les Plaines in my heavy metal book. I don't get the Stereolab or Neu comparisons at all. And I'd say they closer to Leather Nun than to the Scorpions.

Corny indie new wave fuxxors with a put-on harried "racing train desperados" rock 'tude. Used to be vaguely OK in live mode early on. WEAK

des Visages des Figures

Oi I got this as well. Only recently, tho.
Didnnae know nuthin about them and bought the CD because, well, noticed that Brigitte Fontain's name was written in tiny-weeny letters somewhere on the back of the case :)
A real enjoyable record.

veuillez rendre l'ame (a qui elle appartient) is a fantastic album. a really sort of free-as-the-air western feel to it in many parts. some nice variety too. classic catchy tunes.

Cantat's current project Détroit (with Pascal Humbert of 16 Horsepower) is surprisingly excellent, moody dark folkish rock. They're playing here end of Nov and a couple of francophone friends urged me to check last years album Horizons out, it's a great record, in fact I'd easily rate it above both Noir Désir and 16 Horsepower.
