We're excited to announce Coachella 2012 will be held over TWO WEEKENDS.

In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.

We know many of you were unable to attend this year's festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.

Passes go on sale beginning this Friday, June 3rd, 2011, at 10am PST until the following Friday June 10th, 2011, at 10pm PST. This advance sale will be the only opportunity to take advantage of the Coachella Payment Plan. Passes will be available through a payment plan of 10% down and 8 equal monthly payments OR by payment in full. The price of three-day passes remains at $269 plus fees for the sixth consecutive year.

Coachella Weekend 1 - April 13-15, 2012 | Coachella Weekend 2 - April 20-22, 2012

Now if they repeat the same stage fuckups and webstream dropouts and all that, I would admire their commitment to replication.

If it means a slew of pseudo-secret shows from them all in the area so I don't have to deal with the vague pangs of regret I feel each time for not going then bring it on.

Odd, considering many bands booked have to agree not to perform within x miles of Coachella. What are the bands supposed to do in between? Camp?

I went to Coachella a couple of years ago--one of my housemates was performing at the festival--and I don't think I would ever go again. It was...an experience, though.

Do people really enjoy big festivals like this? The horrors described on the Primavera Sound thread give me the Fear.

apart from sleeping in a park, which was not really the fault of the festival, i had a pretty good time at primavera tbh. i think charlie's experience was very unfortunate and somewhat a-typical.

i think big festivals can be great and know friends that have really enjoyed coachella in the past.

Some reaction and hoohah. A bit of interest:

Tollett said the move will not affect the annual Stagecoach Festival, a smaller country music event that Goldenvoice typically produces on the same grounds the weekend following Coachella. The heavy metal music festival that the company produced this year on the Coachella festival grounds will not return in 2012.

Gerry Harrington, who manages Big Audio Dynamite, the post-Clash band led by Mick Jones that re-formed for this year’s Coachella, applauded the move. “If he can pull this off,” Harrington said of Tollett, “it’s the greatest idea ever.”

Tom Windish, whose Chicago-based Windish Agency placed more than 30 acts at Coachella in 2011, said the influx of more tickets should weaken the resale value, but conceded it would be a “new challenge” for tour routers. Still, Windish was optimistic it would create more opportunities, as well as increasing an act’s payday.

“It will mean the artist can walk out with more money from the L.A. market than they had previously … Potentially, now they can double that money. I don’t know if they’ll be offering twice as much money for two shows, but hopefully they will do that.”

Destination festivals like Coachella and Chicago’s Lollapalooza lock artists into exclusivity clauses that place limitations on where an artist can tour in the weeks surrounding the event. How artists will be allowed to fill the gap between Coachellas remained an unanswered question.

“I’m looking forward to hearing more logistical details about what the plan is for performing artists during that week in between,” said Ben Dickey, whose L.A.-based Constant Artist works with Coachella main stage veterans Spoon. “But I’d rather (Tollett) try something creative like this than simply sell more tickets to the one weekend, as that inevitably leads to a less positive experience for fans and artists alike.”

Scott Rodger, who manages 2011 Coachella headliner Arcade Fire, said the booking concerns were largely moot. “Announcing this far out will ensure no booking or routing issues,” he said. “The consumer now has a better choice of weekends too.”

“There is no festival with a concept like this,” Rodger added. “Ultimately, Paul Tollett will try it, and the audience will let him know if it works or not.”

Also, apparently you cannot switch weekends after a ticket is bought.
