What was played at the last dinner party you went to? What did you play at the last dinner party you gave?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't honestly remember what we played at Isabel's last dinner party, it was a couple of years ago. At the last DP I was at Pete played a Bollywood Greatest Songs compilation and then played Guided By Voices to annoy me. I remained the model of civility even though it was awful.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 September 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Last one I attended: Dvorak.
Last one I gave: Tiesto.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Monday, 2 September 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete Yorn. Went over right nice, too. Then the Putamayo JAMAICA comp, a pretty good one. Then LONDON CALLING, which, honestly, didn't really cut it, Jag-u-ar notwithstanding. I think I'm played on them, finally.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 2 September 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance
Serge Gainsbourg - Melody Nelson
mum - Finally We Are No One
Essendon Airport - Sonic Investigations of the Trivial
Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk I

all on random, which was quite interesting whilst I was slaving over the hot stove, etc.

Chet Baker Let's Get Lost: The Best of Chet Baker Sings. The host apologized b/c playing jazz was a dinner party cliche, but I liked it. I usually play jazz at a dinner party myself, maybe Lester Young or Bill Evans. But last one I actually remember we had a guy over who's in his late 70s so I figured he'd appreciate Satch Plays Fats. Indeed he did.

Cooking is a different story though, for that I like Pangea.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 2 September 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Last one I went to: The Avalanches I think (draw from that what you will)
Last one I gave: M. Mayer's Immer mix, but v. softly.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 September 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Dance music mostly. I only remember Nelly which apparently the guy -who organised the party - considered crap.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 2 September 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Tim, at my birthday dinner party we played Avalanches too... Also Buzzcocks '_Singles Going Steady_ and MBV _Ecstasy and Wine_. Mark, those choices make you seem really... sophisticated!

i have never been to a 'dinner party'

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Last one I had I played STUDIO 2 "Breakthrough To Stereo" (which has a great coldstream guards version of Michelle on it), Pizzicato 5 and Basement Jaxx. Can you tell what kind of mood I was in?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

AHA well I do not know what was playing when you lot made up my Buffy Buffet but there is that I guess! When me and K made sushi we listened to Pavement and der Pixies. And on Sunday, pre-cooking preparation was done to ORBITAL and thee Kaoss Pad!

I heart++++++++ thee Kaoss pad!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Last one I went to: Ian Brown 'F.E.A.R' I remember, with Lead Belly for the late at night whisky and spliff bit.

Last one I gave (ages ago and actually a barbeque): Basement Jaxx, Orbital, Blondie.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

it's sooooo hard. the music needs to work well in the background, but even if no one else cares it is a point of principle not to fall into cliche.

That's me hovering nervously by the stereo while no one takes any notice of the significant brilliance of my selections.

I usually find a bit of Nusrat, especially the remix album and the collaboration album, covers the requisite cool/profound/interesting/wonderful/still ok in the background bases.

Then later on (whisky and spliffs, like the man said) either Lewis Talyor or Scott Walker's Tilt. The latter often gets noticed with interest.

jon, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I played Eno's Ambient 4 while eating lunch with my family last Sunday.

A Nairn, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Mix of:
Stereolab, Sound Dust
Ibrahim Ferrer, Buena Vista Social Club Presents...
XTC, Apple Venus Vol 1
Miles Davis, Nefertiti
Bjork, Homogenic

Looking at that, it's clear that I'm a yuppie.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

went to Saturday night: U2, the Pretenders, Blondie, Bjork, Otis Redding, a house mix from Miami

gave: i put my mp3 collection on random which gave everyone a total fright so it went to the CD player: k.d. lang, Ingenue

Yuppie Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The only dinner party I was ever at was about 2 or 3 months ago. It was for a friends birthday. A Zero 7 album was played. I didnt like it but I didnt say anything. It just felt like it was tailor-made for listening at dinner parties and a bit too bland. Someone put Bob Dylan on after that I think.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Some David Bowie album. If barbecues count, then it was Andrew WK.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The best discs for dinner parties are the Hotel Costes cdz mixed by Stephane Pompougnac [sp?]. The first 2 are especially good. I know they're all yuppied out, but they are really quite sleek and sexy-licious and work for eating and dancing. Beware there are many inferior lounge/hotel style imitators.

The Avalanches work well too, especially just after dinner, when diners are drunk and sentimental.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

At the last one we (m'self & the Missus), the hostess played Billie Holiday and ::::shudder:::: John Mayer, who the hostess figured I'd enjoy since I'd commented that I liked the most recent Brendan Benson album. I politely demured from expressing my opinion on Mr.Mayer's music, but opted instead for a bit more wine to soften the blow, so to speak.

At the last one we had (not sure if it was strictly dinner, or possibly just a few folks over for drinks, etc.), it was the new Interpol album (which was roundly boo'ed by all present, save your humble narrarator) then Zero7...which got old pretty fast, honestly. About three-quarters through it, Zero7's SIMPLE THINGS was summarily excised from the system by the wife in favor of Blur's best-of.

How wicked can you be to impose "TILT" on your guests!? That's plain vicious. At the last dinner party I went to, To Rococo Rot and Tarwater were played all night. We ended up eating magic mushrooms.

Simon, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Lovage - Instrumentals

dsico (dsico), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The last proper DP (i.e. with people sat ata table) I had was ages ago when I had accomadation to fit more than one person. All I remember was that the Rough Guide To Klezmer went down really badly with one guest and was fairly swiftly lost even though most of the others quite liked it.
