Souvlaki. The second best shoegazer album ever after MBV's Loveless. Discuss.

new tasty Mediterranean food answers

Keith McD (Keith McD), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

DEAR GOD ANOTHER SLOWDIVE THREAD!!!!!

Souvlaki is gorgeous though and I have now been reminded to try and make my own. If I had time to go to the supermarket today, that is.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Slowdive threads more than Hitler.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Slowdive, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. Is it because they had a cute girlie singer, or what? I don't see Moose getting this kind of attention and they were pretty good...

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Marco for our collective rudeness. :) We had a Slowdive thread quite recently, does anyone know where it's gone?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nicole. well, maaaaaybe a little, sigh, swoon etc. they were great though

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Rather another Slowdive thread than any about Suede...

Marco Mattiuzzo (Psycho Ant), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't mean to sound insulting, Marco. It just seems there's a Slowdive thread every week or so.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The tragedy that is Mojave 3 is probably the main reason.

Marco Mattiuzzo (Psycho Ant), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Moose were a hell of a lot better than Slowdive. I agree that Slowdive get far more attention than they deserve.

What about the Telescopes? Another one who did great stuff after the media had packed up and gone home from the shoegazy picnic.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They're one of my favorite bands, so poo poo to all you haters. What I want to know is, why didn't Mojave 3 make any attempt to follow up on the sound Slowdive created on _Pygmalion_? For that matter, did *anyone* really follow up on that sound? It's such an exquisite and singular record; I really wish there were more that sounded similar.

Amen! Took the words out of my mouth, so to speak -- I've written something similar on my site before. I've found a few albums/songs that evoked a similar overall feeling in me, but none that really had the same sound-world and feel. You'd think everyone would've jumped on it...

Phil (phil), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My sentiments exactly - I only have PYGMALION, and while nothing I've heard off the other two Slowdive records made any impression, PYGMALION is freaking exquisite. I'd buy other records like it, if there were any.

doug, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Pygmalion

The closest 've heard to it is some Labradford tracks, but I would argue that they approach the sound from, and take it in different directions.

It is fantastic though, I was hoping that maybe the Neil Halstead solo record would have similar ideas, but from what I've heard, it doesn't - more like a Nick Drake homage. Incidently does anyone else think that the second track on Pink Moon is very shoegazey harmonically speaking?

The first two Slowdive albums are OK, but really only for die-hard shoegazer types IMHO, and Mojave 3 bore the arse off me.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

morr music have just released a album of slowdive covers, "blue skied an clear"

jk, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

gosh, mojave 3 are wonderful! the neil solo record is a bit of a dud though. slowdive were better than mbv, their songs hold up better and there isn't all the nonsense about production when discussing them. neil halstead is a classic songwriter, always was just that he used to dress everything up in layers of distortion and now he goes for the strum and drum. there should be a slowdive thread every day.

keith, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't entirely agree that Slowdive are better than MBV, but I will say that I listen to the first Mojave album more than all of Slowdive and MBV's albums put together.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i am speaking for personal preference, but i listen to slowdive much more than loveless.

moose deserves a thread every day as well, four classic albums and still completely unheralded.

keith, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If you like Pygmalion you might like: BARK PSYCHOSIS.

(From now on, I'm going to answer every question with BARK PSYCHOSIS.)

Specific BARK PSYCHOSIS tracks that could possibly appeal to fans of Pygmalion: I Know, Nothing Feels, Blood Rush, pretty much the entirety of Hex.

I'd take Slowdive over MBV pretty much any day of the week.

I would take BARK PSYCHOSIS over pretty much any band that ever existed any day of the week.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But where would you take them?

flowersdie, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the more relevant question is "but how would Andy take them?"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy, I also love BARK PSYCHOSIS, and if you haven't heard BARK PSYCHOSIS, then I second Andy's recommendation of wonderful BARK PSYCHOSIS music.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I would take BARK PSYCHOSIS loudly in the ear.

That tells you both how and where I would take BARK PSYCHOSIS.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In a Slowdive interview they said, for Souvlaki, Brian Eno just walked in, set up some mics and recorded them (not doing much special) and when they listened back to the recording it had the classic Eno sound!

three years pass...
sad news, via rachel goswell's myspace page:

I've been quite ill this year so far. It's been difficult. Have held off from mentioning it officially through Mojave sources but as record releases come nearer and tours are being booked, I feel it's time to spill...

Back in January I suddenly lost a moderate amount of hearing in my left ear. Accompanying this I have had really bad problems with my balance and awful tinnutis. It's been very debilitating for me and I haven't been able to do very much at all. The general day to day stuff on it's own has been quite difficult. It took 5 weeks to see a specialist. I've had a few tests now and have more to go through over the next month to determine why what happened happened. Ears are complicated things. What has happened to me I've been told is rare. I've had labyrinthitis (an inner ear infection) which has led to permanent hearing loss, permanent tinnutis and nerve damage in a couple of places in my inner ear. Some nerves have died apparantly and I keep getting additional middle ear infections. My immune system is currently through the floor. I've been on various medication since it all happened to me. The main one was to help me balance, I've come of these drugs now and am adjusting to my new way of life going through daily physiotherapy to retrain my brain to compensate for the loss of the left side. I'm also waiting for a hearing aid.

Anyway, I know alot of people in life go through a lot of shit. We all have to adjust in times of ill health, slow down, sometimes change our lifestyles and I know and appreciate there are people out there that are going through far worse things than me. Some days I feel devastated and have to give myself a big kick to get going.

I'm at a point now when I don't really know when I'll be well enough to do music. I've been told it will take a few months for the physio to work ...Mojave 3 did a video for the new single this week. I wasn't able to take part in that. Touring is not looking like an option I can do right now either. Things are left open for me with all this. If I'm able to, I will take part. A friend has been brought in to cover me for the time being for gigs. The record needs to be released and promoted right? I'm just in no fit state to do any of it at the moment and it all feels pretty harsh.

A month ago I didn't want people knowing; but it's inevitable that it's going to have to come out and I would rather it came directly from me....if anyone out there has been through a similar thing, I sure would like to hear from you..

I seem to recall that Rachel also had an scary ear problem back around one of the ill-fated Slowdive tours - something to do with the changing pressure in an airplane. There was a scary article about it in a Big Takeover from around then...

I hope she gets better.

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Get better Rachel! Thanks for this info mts!

her eardrum blew up back then. the important question is now that whirlpool has been reissued will andrew sherriff make a comeback?

Unlikely. He's been doing sound design for television documentaries for awhile - won an Emmy as I recall for "Walking With Dinosaurs"

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

it's sad that the drummer has released more pop music than he has post-chapterhouse. maybe he just became too disillusioned during the disaster that was blood music.

xxxxto4yrsagopost I don't know, dude, I'm pretty sure Hitler hates Slowdive threads more than you do.

What has happened to me I've been told is rare. I've had labyrinthitis (an inner ear infection) which has led to permanent hearing loss, permanent tinnutis and nerve damage in a couple of places in my inner ear.

My girlfirend had that. She kept going back to the doctors and he kept making her go away with some painkiller until she forced him to get her to see a specialist. If they had caught the infection earlier her hearing may have been fine.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 24 April 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

As a total aside here, I noticed that Monster Movie has a new album out.
