According to AMG his name is Brian Carroll, and he specialises in 'Steve Vai noodling' according to a friend. Isn't he looking pale?

Snotty Moore, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Was he in The Bucketheads, by any chance?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A dude from the Valley.

wl, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no he wasnt in The Bucketheads...that was just Kenny Dope and Louis Vega aka Masters At Work/Nu Yorican Soul

blueski, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

He played Bailey's Company Week once! I think Zorn may have released some of his solo recs on his Japanese label - he certainly plays on some mediocre Laswell recs...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the Bucketheads were just Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez and Chicago's "Street Player".

You can hear him on both of the praxis albums....although they suck

geeg, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

he works alot with bootsy collins and its really good stuff.

There's some pretty good stuff on Sacrifist at least: "Rivet" and "The Hook", two name only two. "Rivet" has the aggressive pounding and Yamataka Eye's insane screaming. "The Hook" sounds like it comes from a different album altogether - it's kind of a hip-hop flavored dance groove, credited to Zorn and Laswell. Also, I don't know why you say "both" Praxis albums. There are at least three, not counting live albums.

TRANSMUTATION (I sure hope I have the title right, I don't have it in front of me) was a pretty damn good live Praxis album, and if you want to hear Buckethead really wailing, it's a good one to check out.

I believe he's also released albums under the name "DEATH CUBE K" (which, for those of you playing along at home, is an anagram of Buckethead). A friend of mine leant an album or two of his to me a while back, but I can't say I was wildly impressed (despite cameos by folks like Iggy Pop, etc.). He does indeed specialize in the noodly variety of playing ala Vai -- which is fine, if that's what you're into, but I find it kinda dull after only a very little while. Moreover, while I do indeed like a lot of indefensibly silly stuff myself, I have a very hard time drumming up any enthusiasm for a player who insists on perpetually wearing a yellow rainslicker, white face mask and a KFC bucket on his head. I guess it's not that different from wearing a big black tophat, but still.....

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

he was really into horror movies when he was a kid. hes like living his childhood fantasy or something. plus its kinda scary live. hes NOT just a noodler as you can witness by his Death Cube K albums or his rather TASTEFULY done NON NOODLEING on his solo piece "Colma"

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to work at a record store for the guy who puts out his albums, and yes it most certainly is just noodling

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I DIDNT SAY HE DIDNT NOODLE. I SAID ITS NOT ALL NOODLING. AND HE PUTS OUT LOTS OF DIFFERENT RECORDS ON LOTS OF DIFFERENT LABELS UNDER LOTS OF NAMES SO YOU DONT KNOW THE ONE GUY THAT PUTS OUT HIS ALBUMS. YOU EITHER KNOW BILL LASWELL JOHN ZORN OR TRAVIS DICKERSON OR THE PRESIDENT OF CAPITOL OR THE PRESIDENT OF CYBER OCTIVE. SHEESH.

Ahem...yes Andrew, I was at Company Week '91 and witnessed the astonishing audiovisual duet between DB and BHead which climaxed the Saturday concert (you can hear Mr and Mrs Carlin cheering and whooping throughout the recording, which came out as Company '91 Vol 3 (pink cover, on Incus). Terrific line-up that year - also had Zorn himself, as well as Paul Lovens (perc), Yves Robert (trombone), I think Paul Rogers on bass, Vanessa Mackness (vocals), Pat Thomas (k'bds/elec). Most of the aforementioned had fingers firmly in ears at the climax of the DB/BHead duet, except for John Z who was pogoing away like a good 'un.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wow marcello i wanna hear

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Actually, he probably knows Norman from Norman's Sound + Vision, 67 Cooper Square, New York. It is also ION Records, though you would never realize it.

Buckethead sometimes noodles, yes it's true. It sounds cool, too. All the other noodlers I can think of don't sound cool. Buckethead is fun and interesting, unlike any Steve Vai or Yngwie or Van Housen I can think of.

Buckethead, Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I saw him Saturday night. He put on one fuckload of a concert, although he was 45 minutes late because he was at King's fucking Island, riding some rollercoasters. I saw Bootsy out back at the show, he didn't get up and play with Bucket (sadface), but these kids that were his nephews or something got up and flowed to a piece. But yeah, his concert was fucking awesome, and his newest album Cuckoo Clocks From Hell is genuinely frightening in places.

Nickalicious, what do you think of Population Overdrive?

Buckethead, Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Buckethead unmasked.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I bet Buckethead is Larry "Ler" Lalonde from Primus.

- That pic of Brian Carroll looks like Larry "Ler" Lalonde.
- They were both born in 1969.
- They both play with Les Claypool from Primus
- They both play with Brain from Primus.
- Larry "Ler" Lalonde played for Primus.
- Buckethead played for Praxis.
- Buckethead's Giant Robot or Monsters & Robots sounds a lot like Larry "Ler" Lalonde's playing style to these ears (and others I've read various places online researching Buckethead)

... And what happened to Larry "Ler" Lalonde, anyway? Hm? Besides the reuniting with Primus for "Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People," he basically disappeared all those years Buckethead was playing.
