almost no discussion of him. does anyone rate him--and the various bands he's spent time in e.g. 5 hand reel and boys of the lough?
i tend to like him solo better than as part of band. i'm particularly fond of his very first LP, 'no more forever.' i have a harder time with the later, protest material, with the exceptional of the magisterial 'handful of earth' LP.
anyway, discuss dick gaughan please. and to the scots: please tell me the correct pronunciation of this guy's last name.

I only really know Handful of Earth, but that's a great record. Saw him in the backroom of a pub about eight years ago too and he played guitar like a monster.

Have heard just a couple of his tracks, which have been pretty great, on various "folk compilations".And I recall a passionate little speech in Gaughan's honour, delivered by drummer man Ken Hyder, in the midst of his interview sometime in the early 90s... Which was the first time Dick Gaughan's name registered with me and the first time I heard Gaughan's playing, on a cassette Hyder gave me then...Hmm, tried to locate the cassette now. Did not. Blimey.

^ this was the first song of his I heard, when it was chosen by June Tabor on a radio show as one of her favourite songs. Gave me the goosebumps then, gives me the goosebumps now.

^ Agree with all of this.
and to the scots: please tell me the correct pronunciation of this guy's last name.
Gau- pronounced Gaw-, the gh- part is like the ch- of loch or Bach. I think it's an Irish name anyway.
Did I mention I met him at a motorway service station recently?
Me: "Dick... Dick!"
Dick peers myopically at me thinking it's someone he knows...
Me: "You don't know me, just thought I'd say hello..."
Me and Dick shake hands.
Me: "So what are you up to?"
Dick: "Just stopped off for a cup of tea and a pish."
... and so on.

... reminds me, once saw him playing in a pub in London and a friend of mine was a bit late getting to the gig, he said he walked in and the first thing he saw was DG sitting on the stairs, reading a copy of the *Morning Star, he looked up, nodded and said, "**Howzitgaun?" and then continued reading.
