friend of mine has got hold of a copy and was lording it over me last night. grrr. i will be patient and wait til i'm in the states to get a copy -- it takes 5 or so weeks to get it on amazon.co.uk on import!

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Soulseek is barren of copies. Can you pick one up for me Alang? :)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Only heard it once, but I found it really disappointing. And I LOVED the first one. Either I'm far more sick of Merritt than I realized or the quality of his songwriting has taken a big dip post-69 Love Songs. Did the Eban and Charley stuff stay with anyone? The Eternal Youth songs that I remember--"I'm a Vampire" and "The World Is A Disco Ball"--are mediocre at best. The lyrics and melodies have become as predictable as Aimee Mann. Though I don't think he's ever come up with a title as awful as "Doris Daytheearthstoodstill". And I never knew Claudia Gonson's voice could be so grating--the spoken bit during "I'm a Vampire" is particularly bad.

Still, I've only heard it once. So don't let me bum your trip. And maybe Ewen is as much to blame as Merritt. I'd love to hear what all the old ILM Merritt-boosters think of it.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Quick facts: 16 songs - 10 with vocals, 6 short instrumentals. Claudia Gonson sings lead, and only one (I think) track has Stephin Merritt on backing vocals. Chris Ewen is the man behind the machines.

No big surprises to those familiar with other Future Bible Heroes releases. Standouts so far: "I'm a Vampire," an incredibly cheesy, hilarious, and catchy number with a spoken section (!). "Kiss Me
Only with Your Eyes," a cleverly-written song that combines
feminism, death, and theology as a fictional account of Mary Daly; I can't get its chorus out of my head.

Re: Eban and Charley
Honestly, I don't listen to the instrumentals on it very often, but the lyrical songs are fantastic, in particular "Maria Maria Maria," "Tiny Flying Player Pianos," "This Little Ukulele," and "Some Summer Day."

Ernest P., Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Very grim lyrics (aliens, vampires, the undead) sorta Rob Zombie meets Book of Love. Too many instrumental snippets connecting songs, too.
But plus points for Claudia Gonson's vocals and Stephin's lyrics as always.
Musically, only a few upbeat discoey tunes, but most of the tracks are gloomy ballads and miss the Merritt upbeat synthpop momentum.
Better than the EP (I'm Lonely and I Love it) but no "Memories of Love."

Gary Shipes, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

claudia can't sing but this doesn't stop it from being lovely all the same. i think it is a large step up from the last one. the high points are definitely 'i am a vampire' and 'kiss me with your eyes', it also has several other nice ballads including 'light from a dying star'. the instrumentals are sorta throwaway although a couple may have been nicely made whole.

keith, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

did she stop being able to sing at some point in the recent past??!

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the real new future bible heroes are 'old time relijun'.

yabut, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It will have to be amazing to top 'Memories Of Love', which may be my definition of a flawless album.

tom: it *is* on soulseek. do you want a copy?

The album's bloody great, especially "Doris Daytheearthstoodstill" and "I'm A Vampire" - thoughts, all?

I am not sure I know what the point of the FBH is. I don't mean they are bad. I think I mean, I don't know why they use that name rather than release Magnetic Fields LPs, as it would make the MFs seem more prolific.

CAMPbell kindly gave me their first LP and I have been listening to it. She didn't like it much. I don't know. I think 'Lonely Days' might be good, as well as the familiar 'Hopeless'.

A Search for FBH reveals lots of ilxors who like them more than 69 Love Songs and other MFs!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't Future Bible Heroes contain a non-MF member who writes/arranges all the music?

I didn't realise there were any other ILXors apart from me who prefered FBH to MF - well, the first album anyway. I never saw the second album over here, sadly.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, something like that, I think it does. But still.

Yes, there are, I think - try Searching!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Does The Magnetic Fields need to be more prolific? They have sixty-nine entire love songs.

In any case, I think MF and FBH are quite different. The latter is pretty much all electro-pop all the time (no doubt partly due to Chris Ewen, the aforementioned non-MF member); MF are sometimes electro-pop, but their output is also more varied.

The second FBH is an absolute gem. Much better than the first for me, partly because Claudia handles all the vocals.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure about 'entire'.

Have not heard 2nd FBH LP.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have listened to the first LP a lot, now, and I think CAMpbell underrated it!

N. said on another thread that 'Lonely Days' was one of the songs of the decade. And he should know! I like it.

Even tracks that seem to me quite poor, like 'Blond Adonis', turn out to be catchy.

I wonder why more folk have not leapt from the closet to declare their affection for this record.

the pinefox, Friday, 14 October 2005 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I love every song on it. Every song. It is flawless.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 October 2005 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Flawless?

'Lonely Days' I like, like N., as said.

'She-Devils of the Deep': can you explain the significance of this track? I don't even know what it is about. And I have not deciphered the cryptic lyric puzzle.

'Hopeless' is fine, and I realized afresh its intricacy when working it out on my axe the other day.

'Death Opened A Boutique': again I don't think I get the conceit here: what is it saying?

'You Pretend To Be The Moon' is not great; not as good as other Merritt moon songs, probably.

'Blond Adonis', poor yet catchy.

'But You're So Beautiful' I think not great.

I like the title of 'A You You Never Knew', not sure about the rest of the song.

'Real Summer' is quite striking; I like the chords under 'you were / mine' in the chorus.

'Memories of Love' seems to me average Merritt.

'You Steal The Scene' I have perhaps not got the measure of.

I don't like the way that this site - http://www.rykodisc.com/Catalog/dump/rykoalbums_659.asp -

says that ms Gonson finished her PhD in 'a record one year'. That is showing off, and in my country would be a meaningless statistic anyway. I had better stop, I don't want to cause more public offence.

I seem to be talking myself out of my new-found affection for this LP. Oh no!

the pinefox, Friday, 14 October 2005 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

I think all the songs with Merritt on vocals are deliberately, er, insignificant, their main point being to parade delectably shiny surfaces (in production and wordplay both).

I adore "You Pretend To Be The Moon" and "You Steal The Scene" - Merritt should make more ambient-pop.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 October 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Tim email me if you would like to hear the second album (after all ths yrs)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 14 October 2005 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think I have decided that the guitar solo on 'Lonely Days' is the high point of the whole LP.

It is quite hard-wearing, this record; I have played it again and again. And again!

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

it is one of my play it over and over lps too. i believe all the lyrics are meant "theatrically"

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Re the theatricality of Merritt's lyrics, maybe one reason why I find them so touching is that the theatricality is like a method of dealing with (and distancing oneself from) the subject matter of the songs, taking the sting out of them, and yet by doing this also drawing attention to the sting that has been removed.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

i love the glass-rod stirring a glass beaker of solution sound in Lonely Days. ISTR that that song was mark radcliffe's record of the week about a year after the album came out.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think Merritt should be less prolific, then invent a time machine and travel back to around "Holiday," "Carm" and "Get Lost" and learn how to write lyrics and songs that aren't some sort of smug/coy/boring exercise in style. And Claudia should not sing.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, new album starts off well but half way through I just wanted it to end. I'm pretty sure that happened with the last Magnetic Fields album too.
