people shouldn't bail on a band just because they "become a thing" imo. but as i always say, I'm not a Williamsburg college student so to me they're not "a thing" they're a band I like whom hardly anyone I speak to on a day-to-day basis has necessarily heard of.

I don't think they became a completely different band. The mainstays and trademarks of their style (repetitive drones, indecipherable lyrics, Beach Boys harmonies, techno influence) has stuck, despite stylistic changes, but that's why I guess they're good. I like it when bands change style - good for them.

they really didn't change that fast or that much, totally a gradual thing. the weird thing is the MPP aftermath where they're playing big big shows still but you hear lots of griping about them 'not playing the hits' and 'having weird hazey sound' and 'improvising'.

Also, I think this is a false accusation that gets dug up all the time but makes no sense to me. Is it just because of "My Girls" that if people aren't moaning about how popular AC are with kooky Citroen hatchback-driving students, they have to fixate on a misconstrued "child of nature" aesthetic that doesn't really exist. This isn't something I get from AC whatsoever.

xpost for me it's less "childhood", more "animals" - but not cute fluffy ones. Sung Tongs especially, is a primalistic savantist album, but not one that takes me back to my childhood. I hear it as the logical side-stepping that would've been made by the animals of Dr Moreau had they been musically inclined.
