This song is the poem David Berman writes only occasionally.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

i guess "'Cause I don't have a a clue anymore" seems like the thesis line for me, so ill go with that one. but let me qualify by saying that this is one of my five favorite pavement songs, and that every lyric is supportive of its status thus.

i remember reading a live review of a gig where he sang "check the expiration, DAMON!"....around the time of Blur´s self titled album

Michael B, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

did pavement ever really think about blur that much

69, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

69, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't "In a chair" logically part of "There is no castration fear"? I always took it that way - despite the suspenseful pause in between the two lines. "There is no castration fear... in a chair." ie., mocking those afraid to dance - it's safer to stay in a chair, but we'll dance anyway.

i have never heard it this way! i've always heard it as "there is no castration fear" full stop, which is a lovely sentiment with which to begin a song, and then, he and the girl are sitting in a chair together. i guess i am kind of literal-minded.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

omg maybe i have been all wrong

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

Like most Pavement lyrics, it probably could support multiple interpretations.

(altho I've always thought Pavement's REAL Oldham homage was that "Saginaw" song)

Sounds like a Bowie ca. Hunky Dory song I can't place, or maybe Ray Davies imho. lol @ Suede.

I don't consider myself a racist, but I can't hear the words "Brazilian nuts" without another phrase popping into mind. Not just Pavement, but everywhere.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

"brazil nuts"?

I didn't look at the Pavement poll results until just now so when I saw this had its own poll I thought it must be done and this was #1

this pleased me because if I'd voted I would have voted for it

in retrospect it seems kind of improbable but you guys have tricks up your sleeve iirc so

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

Reading the poll result in order and hearing those lines sung by Malkmus in my head makes for a very odd mash-up or remix of the song.

Glad to not be alone on the dance-floor in this poll. Maybe we can dance?

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

the marvelous thing about this song is that Malkmus could have sung these verses in THIS order and still made it work.
