Jeeeeeeez.

charlie va, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

skimmed it. yawn. didn't Eric Weisbard write this article in the New York Times in '99 or something?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"just because you like something doesn't mean it isn't not rock"

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Pending Mark's 96 Theses on Rockism, can we have this link in the FAQ?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

This guy's an editor?

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha "pending" indeed)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"there will never be another KISS."

Dang. Question: with no-one like KISS around, is rock'n'roll really worth saving?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I could write for about seven days on why that was the piss-weakest piece of music crit I've seen in ages, but "Jesus Christ, that was fucking abysmal" will suffice.

Thank God Eminem and the Goo Goo Dolls are around, hey? Or else music would collapse around our very feet.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha that picture he used isn't even Kiss, it's one of those lame tribute bands! Ace is the giveaway, but none of them look particularly good.

HA!

the writing is truly dreadful but his kernal of an idea - "Eminem is rock and roll" - seems sound to me

J0hn Darn1elle, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but his understanding of that idea and its implications is also apalling - and, crucially, the idea is actually earlier and better explained directly and verbally by *Eminem himself* in the first single off the album (i.e. all the Elvis comparison bits) so presenting it as a revelation is a bit crappy. What really grates is the whole "Yeah, that's right. I said it, Eminem is rock'n'roll." vibe.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

OK am i being naive, but this piece is a parody and/or pisstake, surely?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't think so.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

As soon as I read that "Rock & Roll is about not giving a fuck" I stopped reading. I just saved rock & roll. No need to thank me, I'd do it again in a minute.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Like there is ever going to be a lack of rebelliousness and "not giving a fuck" in the USA -- that shit will ALWAYS sell. You could say that MTV show Jackass is the "new rock'n'roll."

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Enron's accounting practices were so rock n roll!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

why do people keep insisting that rock and roll is ANY ONE THING? that's like saying "classical music is all about French horn arpeggios" or "jazz is all about cymbal brushes" or "techno is all about hi-hat patterns"--just because it's something you enjoy about that music doesn't mean that's all there is to it. STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

did it need to be 'saved' in the first place? what from? gormless 'music writers' perhaps?

angelo (angelo), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

rock'n'roll = giving a gorm

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz, the "Enron is rock n roll" article would have been a lot more interesting.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, I have to admit I thought he was putting on too when I first read it.

Clarke B., Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

eminem = ass. i just saved rock and roll too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem can't be rock and roll because he obviously gives a fuck -- gives a fuck about being potentially slandered by vegans and canine hand puppets, for starters.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I love it when people talk as if rock'n'roll is some kind of golem that needs to be constantly resurrected with the blood of 13-year-old Cure fans instead of a vaguely defined musical genre and late 1950s fashion craze. It makes life seem so much more interesting.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

WILL Hildegard save plainchant? Film at eleven.
