how do you pronounce 'talk'

(eval ' (diamonddave85), Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Not like tock/clock/stock/rock. More like Peter Tork/stalk/chalk.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

I've been mispronouncing "Tork" forever, apparently.

the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

rock and chalk rhyme don't they

where are you from emily?

frogbs, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

No, they don't rhyme! Do you think rock and pork rhyme too?

(I'm from the UK, midlands but no strong accent.)

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

Which one of those two rhymes with "pork"? Is it "rork" or "chork"?

frogbs, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

'Chork'. I'm guessing you pronounce it 'chock'?

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

(Though if we're being exact the 'or' part of 'pork' is probably a bit longer than the 'or' sound of 'chalk').

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

yeah - so is "talk talk" pronounced like "tork tork"?

frogbs, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, pretty much.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

I can't think of any.

I can think of a few albums and artists that rhyme, but not where the artists did the albums concerned...

Mark G, Friday, 17 June 2011 08:29 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah this is hard. Seems to me that most artists when casting around for an album title would automatically nix one that rhymes with their name, unless it's done for reasons of euphony like most of those named above.

Which one of those two rhymes with "pork"? Is it "rork" or "chork"?

Neither I think? Isn't chalk supposed to have a slightly longer vowel sound than rock? That phantom 'r' is an Southern English thing.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 17 June 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

hehe surely we should know by now not to get into the whole pronunciation thing :-)

fwiw, the way I say chalk and pork are close enough to rhyme. rock is nowhere near.
