Anyone heard "Dirrty" the supposedly leaked new single from Christina Aguilera?

dsico (dsico), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Christina goes all Sonic Youth shocker!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

please tell me that 2nd R isn't a typo and she has in fact moved to St. Louis.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

it is indeed not a typo

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Very selfconscious cross-over attempt to one up (down?) the "dirty" in 'dirty pop'. The vocals are overcharged and monotonous but neat production job with the clicks+dirge bass. Also, Redman should have had at least 3x the presence he does here.

Honda, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a Typo. anyway...

it was a particularly unsubtle attempt to spam regarding a cut-up glitch-pop remix of "Dirrty" that i did the other day ...

if anyone was interested you can downaload from: dsico website.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

u know ur ghetto when you're in a limo at hardee's / and for dessert you send your boyfriend for chef boy-ar-dee

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

THIS IS THE BEST THING SHE'S DONE SINCE "GENIE IN A BOTTLE"!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Her pre-show chat with whomever on the red carpet prior to the VMA's was as cringe-conjuring as a minstrel show.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That is impossible; I have never looked at a minstrel show and wondered what would happen if they suddenly started doing jumping jacks.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry = my hero

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

are there only remixes posted on the site or am i not looking at the right spot?

dave k, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

(Finally, it is cool to be from the Lou!)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm. It's no "I'm a Slave 4 U." The problem is Christina just can't help "showing off" her voice. It almost sounds like fist pumping hair metal at the end. Not the music but all the shouty repetitions of "dir-tay!" "naw-tay!"

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It's amazing, not because it's good, but because it tries SO DAMN HARD! You gotta respect her for that - not even Pink would put Redman on the *unremixed* version of her comeback single.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's pretty dire.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

But does it sound like Liz Frasier? That's what I'm too lazy to find out.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i keep finding a Ruff Ryders song called "Dirrty" instead.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah my site ONLY has remixes.

dsico (dsico), Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, its direness is hardly the point. I stopped rating Christina's actual quality circa "Lady Marmalade", and once I stopped wanting her to be, like, y'know, *good*, she became a lot more enjoyable!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(BTW, that is not an endorsement of 'ironic' pop appreciation)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, she increases the gaiety of the nation. But it's still dire.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard it yet, but I'm curious...is C.A. picked on as much as she is because she genuinely deserves it, or because it's just so easy to do? (This is a genuine question, btw, I'm not taking the piss.)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

She gets the piss taken because she's got a strong, recognisable image - same goes for every other pop star out there who has, pretty much. None of them "deserve" it but none of them read ILM either!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Whether she "deserves it" or not wasn't what I meant at all; it's just that the "she's a tramp/ho/skeezer!" talk always seems to intensify about her rather than Britney or Beyonce, from me included, even if it's semi-mockingly.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's because she's an easy target. She has a great voice but spent far too much time listening to the showboaty parts of Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston songs and now believes she has to continually showboat/over-ornament in order to show that she is a good singer. Oops. Also, she has the fashion sense of tacky carrot.

Nicole: the new single sounds nothing like Liz Frasier. I would be amazed if Linda Perry had anything to do with it, actually; the only possible outcome I can see of a studio meeting between Redman and Linda is Linda wetting her pants and crying for her mommy and Redman rolling his eyes saying, "Damn, I just asked if there was any coffee!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

There are obvious reasons for this, i.e. the outfits, but I can't help wondering if there isn't a little more glee about finally being able to unreservedly say this type of stuff instead of qualifying it the way folks (here, anyway) do w/Britney or Beyonce. Yes I know there are qualitiative differences, I take those into account--"Slave 4 U" is a great record, so is "Say My Name," can't think of a single by C.A. that measures up--but...well, I dunno. Just questioning my own actions, as much as anyone else's, I guess.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I posted a split second after Dan.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

can't think of a single by C.A. that measures up

"Genie In A Bottle"
"Dirrty"

The singing in "What A Girl Wants" is very good, but the song irritates the shit out of me.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I wouldn't go she's-a-tramp-ho-skeezer about anyone, like their music or not.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't heard "Dirrty" yet, disagree about "Genie in a Bottle," and if "A Stroke of Genius" counts, then that.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I just saw the video for this song last night. It takes all of the seedy elements of "I'm A Slave 4 U" and ramps them up about 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000% (clear parallel between the songs and the videos, then). Not only is this the best video Christina has ever put out (Pink and Avril wish they were as punk rawk as Christina!) but it also reinforces my love of the song. Tom Ewing is often a wise man, but in this particular case he is absolutely bonkers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the "making of the video" special last night, as I am sick and bed-ridden. I don't think the song is that amazing, but it certainly the best she has done since Genie. I can;t seem to get into Christina's stuff at all. I can't figure it out. the song just seemed a lot older than it really is. compared to "work it" or "slave" even, this song sounds a little tired to me.

Dan you are right that it beats the shit out of most of the stuff out there, though. Avril makes clean power pop about being dirty, and pink is maybe to vulnerable nowadays, but Christina seems to feel it or live it a little more. This is where Christina wins vs. Britney. When Britney was on the MTV awards dressed like a dominatrix, it was ludicrous for her to be speaking in that voice of hers. there was no relationship between her front and her true nature, if such a thing can be shown to exist (at all, not just with pop stars1). christina actually convinces me somewhat, esp. with the faux ghetto accent, that she is actually someone who likes warehouse parties and mud and capricious sex. I am not arguing for *authenticity* in pop...
