Torn between Bowie and The Beach Boys, both with really great tracks. Voting "Life On Mars", but would have gone Beach Boys had the "Surf's Up" album been represented by "Till I Die" instead of the (awesome, after all) title track.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 19 June 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

My favorite Bowie track pre-1975 vs. the drums of doom. Drums conquer all, so the vote goes to When The Levee Breaks.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 19 June 2011 01:37 (thirteen years ago)

Also great tracks from Lennon, Crosby and Cohen. And Rod Stewart's best ever moment besides a couple of his underrated early 80s new wave-ish singles. "Vincent" is actually better than "American Pie" IMO, while "Inner City Blues" is the only one of the four singles off "What's Going On" that I do notlike. And... "Stairway To Heaven" is great, "When The Levee Breaks" is not...

iatee, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

Down to five for me: "Maggie May," "Surf's Up," "It's Too Late," "Tired of Being Alone," or "Superstar." I'll vote for "It's Too Late," a song I've slighted elsewhere. Egregious omissions: the Undisputed Truth's "Smiling Faces Sometimes," the Stylistcs "Betcha By Golly, Wow," Sly's "Family Affair," the Rolling Stones' "Sway" (or at least something from Sticky Fingers), the Move's "Do Ya," Nilsson's "Without You." Picks I would prefer: "Let's Stay Together," "Kooks," "Carey." Five oddball favourites: Carly Simon's "Anticipation," Grin's "Lost a Number," the Guess Who's "Rain Dance," Jefferson Airplane's "Thunk," Spring's "Sweet Mountain." No way in heaven and earth is "Vincent" half the song "American Pie" is.

clemenza, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:28 (thirteen years ago)

why Al Green "Tired Of Being Alone" over "Let's Stay Together?"

voting "Bang A Gong (Get It On)."

Bee OK, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

Damn, "Maggie May" just for that mandolin solo.

jetfan, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

Just listened to the clip of "City of New Orleans." Goodman wrote it, but sounds to me like Arlo nailed it in his cover.

"Surf's Up" belongs more to 1966-67 imo.

Clip of that Lata Mangeshkar song sounds great.

timellison, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:37 (thirteen years ago)

Famous Blue Raincoat=Cohen at his best.

Young, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

Levee vs. Surf's Up vs. Superstar vs. Won't Get Fooled vs. It's Too Late for me. A lot of tough choices!

Shart Shaped Box (Phil D.), Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

i've loved levee the longest, but i think i'm going to side with the beach boys.

if jeepster was the t rex of choice, i would have voted for it.

charlie h, Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 19 June 2011 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

No love for Judee Sill?

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 June 2011 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised by the lack of love for "Imagine" so far - too corny?

o. nate, Monday, 20 June 2011 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I thought this list was better than last year's. I think "Famous Blue Raincoat" is my favorite Cohen song so I went with that. But, I dunno.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 20 June 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

My reactions to most of the songs on this list fall into one of three categories: LOVE them, sick of them, or never heard them.

Darin, Monday, 20 June 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

needs Can imo

taking drugbs (to make music to take drugbs to) (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

To Darin, I would say overplay is usually a sign of lasting quality, so I guess no wonder you are sick of many of the songs in the list.

The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again 3

Surprised. Thought it'd be in the running to win.

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

Me too (I'm one of the 3). I think its reputation has suffered due to NCIS and car commercials. But like Townshend said, "Your perception of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is so shallow that it's violated by dancing raisins?!"

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

dang, missed this. probably would have voted for "life on mars".

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

(so was I, escapey!)

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not surprised by "Won't Get Fooled Again" polling low--for me, anyway, everything Tommy and beyond has to contend with this none-too-attractive mental image I carry around in my head of a bare-chested Roger Daltrey bellowing out that scream that I tired of years ago. There are other, less overplayed songs on Who's Next that I think survive much better.

The thing that surprises me is how high the Carpenters are. Great song, almost voted for it myself, but 25 years ago I had to be almost apologetic when I let on how much I loved the early Carpenters singles. Things have changed so much.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

Not necessarily for the better. I'm all for reevaluating unjustly maligned pop from back whenever. ABBA I'm willing to suspend judgement on. I'll grant that Karen Carpenter had an impressive voice and that the duo had some fetching melodies. But for the most part - ick.

thewufs, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

Voted for "Levee," but could have easily gone for "Surf's Up," "Inner City Blues" or "Family Affair" if it was included. And "Superstar" is a decent song so far as the Carpenters go.

thewufs, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

Lot of great songs here but "Life on Mars" is just beyond the asteroid belt.

President Keyes, Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:12 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wow I didn't even notice there was no Family Affair or Maggot Brain

This book is vile

taking drugbs (to make music to take drugbs to) (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

Woulda voted Surf's Up.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 23 June 2011 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

And "Superstar" is a decent song so far as the Carpenters go.

Yeah, but it's still a Delaney and Bonnie song really.

Mark G, Thursday, 23 June 2011 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wow I didn't even notice there was no Family Affair or Maggot Brain

This book is vile

There are other genres than funk and R&B too, you know, although I guess those might well have been in the book instead of other funk/R&B picks.
