as unlikeable as she is on Idol and Platinum Hit, I give her a little more credit than the average music reality show judge because she's written a few songs I really like, but looking at this list she's definitely tossed a lot of crap out there too.

i wonder if after working with Max Martin and Dr. Luke or whoever, labels go "ok, we've got our big first single, now call Kara for the underperforming second and third singles and we're good to go"

Didn't she co-write Heaven on Earth by Britney? That one, then.

We make bouquets that fade immediately. (Turangalila), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 12:49 (thirteen years ago)

i love "Beep" but i hope someone just plays that song as a response next time she dismisses a silly song idea on Platinum Hit

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

I was just about to say, the fact that the woman who wrote these songs is telling other people how to write songs is emblematic of why so many songs are terrible.

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

I'm curious if any of these are pure Kara joints or if they're all from the factory

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, if she ever gave me shit about my lyrics I would pull out a copy of Bo Bice's "The Real Thing" and point out that she wrote a song that starts like this:

Every word I say, I mean it
Every single day, I feel it

But sometimes when you talk
It's obvious you want to show it
So don't blow it

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

"You got what I want boy and I want it"

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

Come Clean, Fly, the Ashlee tunes, the Kelly tunes, Sober, Ain't No Other Man.

"Sunshine" is okay from memory.

No opinions on "Good Girls Go Bad" so far? I don't exactly like it, but I'm curious as to whether Kara could make it writing for 3OH!3 and the like.

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

to stretch herself like that...i don't know.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

does anyone know which part of the pop factory stew is her specialty? It's not like there's many (any?) solo credits, so is she the go-to person for hooks, lyrics, what?

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

I think she is the go-to person for imperious putdowns and unearned self-importance

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

I gathered that she was a lyrics person by the way she's always suggesting hackneyed sentiments on Platinum Hit.

― da croupier, Tuesday, June 21, 2011 12:03 PM (3 minutes ago) Bookmark

i've seen her credited specifically for lyrics on some songs and i think in general her specialty is words and vocal melodies, doesn't seem to have much of a hand in production or instrumentation (xpost)

admin logbs (some dude), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

on the wikipedia page for that theory of a deadman jam (which i somehow haven't heard - not sure i've heard anything by this combo) she's credited for just lyrics, though she also has a production credit

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

I loved in the road trip challenge when she was all "man, why didn't I think of that lyric?" I yelled at the television "BECAUSE YOU ARE TERRIBLE"

She also had the nerve to tell one dude in the first week that he was trying to sell the song with his performance rather than letting the song sell itself; looking at this list makes that criticism even more hilarious.

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

come on, man, you need to tailor a song to fit voices as wildly various as h. duff and a. simpson. this is songwriting 101.

This is what happens when Kara and Dave Stewart try to write music for a fictional album "recorded" in 1974

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

"In a 2005 interview, DioGuardi explained that she and Stewart were asked to write songs for The Pussycat Dolls in 2004. Instead, the pair ended up with material that DioGuardi described as resembling Fleetwood Mac."

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

this woman is a lyrical genius:

Hey, how long till the music drowns you out?
Don't put words up in my mouth,
I didn't steal your boyfriend,
Hey, how long till you face what's going on?
Cause you really got it wrong,
I didn't steal your boyfriend,
Hey, how long till you look at your own life,
Instead of looking into mine,
I didn't steal your boyfriend,
Hey, how long till you're leaving me alone,
Don't you got somewhere to go?
I didn't steal your boyfriend,

Whoa, whoa, whoa ha
Whoa, whoa, whoa ha

Please stop telling all your friends,
I'm getting sick of them,
Always staring at me like I took him from ya'

the only songs on here that I know which I also consider to be bona fide good songs (and not good performances of wholly perfunctory material) are "Sober" and "Walk Away"

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

my god, touring through this woman's songwriting catalog is sheer hell

I won't tell you what I'm thinking
'Cause it's not the same thing you're thinking too
You could say I got a best friend
And she's always telling me what to do

She's out of sight but easy to find
She's in the front of my mind

[CHORUS:]
The little voice in my head won't let me forget
The little voice in my head is never misled
All of this noise is what keeps me from making a mess
The little voice in my head just won't let me get with you

La lala la la......

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

i've never heard "little voice," i thought it was duff's ode to her own feeble instrument

admin logbs (some dude), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

... it kind of is

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

surprisingly, "Love Story" by the always-detestable Katherine McPhee (a pop singer so feeble she lost a teenpop-driven singing competition to TAYLOR HICKS) is practically Shakespeare compared to some of these other songs:

I think it was the summertime
When I laid eyes on you
I didn't even know your name
Somehow we'd end up in the same room
It never crossed my mind
I never saw you like that
I should've listened to my best friend
She knew it would be a perfect match

[Chorus:]
It's a typical love story
Started out as friends
We met way back when
This is just a typical love story
The boy you never wanted just steals your heart
I never saw it comin' 'til I fell so hard

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

the depths of Japanese poop burger on display in these poll options should be measured by how, in this context, I find myself really enjoying a Katherine McPhee song

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

"Love Story" is dope imo -- very out of character Danja production!

admin logbs (some dude), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

gotta be "escape" for me. "wanted" has a nice catchy chorus but would have been better sung by someone who isn't a black hole of anticharisma.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

love hook up so much; that's one of my favorite kelly clarkson songs

kaygee, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

the narrative of that song is confused as hell

[Verse 1]
Oh sweetheart, put the bottle down
You've got too much talent
I see you through those bloodshot eyes
There's a cure you've found it
Slow motion sparks
You caught that chill
Now don't deny it
But boys will be boys
Oh yes they will
They don't wanna define it
Just give up the game and get into me
If you're looking for thrills then get cold feet

[Chorus]
Oh no I do not hook up, up
I go slow
So if you want me
I don't come cheap
Keep your hand in my hand
And your heart on your sleeve
Oh no I do not hook up, up
I fall deep
'Cause the more that you try
The harder I'll fight
To say ... Goodnight

[Verse 2]
I can't cook, no, but I can clean
Up the mess she left
Lay your head down and feel the beats
As I kiss your forehead
This may not last
But this is now
So love the one you're with
You want a chase
But you're chasing your tail
A quick fix won't ever get you well

[Chorus]

'Cause I feel the distance
Between us
Could be over
With a snap of your finger...
Oh no

[Chorus:]
Oh no I do not hook up, up
I go slow
So if you Want me
I don't come cheap
Keep your hand in my hand
And your heart on your sleeve
Oh no I do not hook up, up
I fall deep
'Cause the more that you try
The harder I'll fight
To say...
'Cause the more that you try
The harder I'll fight
To say... Goodnight

Oh sweetheart put the bottle down
'Cause you don't wanna miss out

it is such a bad song

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Write in for Ashlee Simpson's "Better Off" (I definitely think Ashlee brought out the best in her)

Otherwise "La La" vs "Fly" vs "Screwed"

PΓ☼LΞG☼ (prolego), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

"Heaven on Earth" is the only song she's written that I really love, but I think "One Minute" is pretty good, too, so it gets my vote. Wish it had been a single in the U.S.

the most startling thing about this song is the piano line that's an interpolation of the main synth melody from Depeche Mode's "Strangelove"

the chorus is terribad
