what is the story with Mick Middles?

was he a decent music journalist, or a self-aggrandizing hack?

I just broke out the Joy Division/Factory book for the first time in a few years. His style came across as more of the gossip/interview variety, rather than as someone who makes unusual connections and has interesting insights. I definitely got the feeling I should be reading everything with a grain of sand.

What are your thoughts ilm?

His Manics book is pretty, er, strange for lack of a better word. Middles rambles on for pages about things like the history of Wales, obsesses weirdly on certain aspects of his subjects, rarely quotes anyone directly, never provides sources and doesn't stick to any coherent chronological order. He also talks about the Fall a lot for no apparent reason. For all that, I actually found it pretty interesting. So yeah, read with a grain of sand, but

...to finish that sentence, read with a grain of salt, but he's not totally dismissible by any means.
