I was looking around for a Man Parrish thread, and there is no Man Parrish thread!
Classic, obviously. But what is he up to now, I wonder? I just found my 12" of "Hip Hop Be Bop (Don't Stop)"--the best 99 cents I've ever spent

"Heatstroke" is on the other side:

I love his bits and pieces in the Klaus Nomi doc, sounds like he'd be the perfect raconteur.

"rap = jazz" was a critical meme before they were called memes and in retrospect i think "hip hop be bop" perfectly illustrates this, using kraftwerk as the basis for improvisation in the same way that bird and monk transformed standards. "hip hop be bop" is the most apt song title ever. it's a beautiful piece of music, the synth lines in the bridge are haunting and melancholy, conjuring up images of nyc in 1983 when this song echoed from every boombox.

i wanted to talk about man parrish after the recent Cybotron stuff. The album is quite odd. I don't think there'll ever be a song as implacable as Together Again.

first time I heard Hip Hop Bebop, it blew my mind. To me it was 'Amber'-era Autechre done ten years early. Devastating.

The 7 ½ minute extended remix of Hip Hop Be Bop is also worth checking out, it's even more minimal than the original.
"Boogie Down (Bronx)" is another brilliant Man Parrish tune. Are there any other electro/old school rap tunes where the rapping (not just the chorus) is done through the vocoder too? Seems like an obvious idea, but I haven't come across any others.

If you didn't know it, Man Parrish also produced this gay club classic:

that Importe 12" you link to is the one I have. It's incredible. when I found it in a 99 cent bin, all the grooves were crammed with dirt--the vinyl was literally grey from all of the dirt in the grooves. I had to clean it three or four times to restore it to its original glory.
That was the funny thing about that record shop--all of this expensive rock and jazz vinyl on the shelves, neatly categorized, you know, hip records that cost $20 or $30 with plastic protective sleeves. And then on the floor, all these amazing electro records circa '82 and '83, and all this Chicago house circa '86, just laying there unsorted in dirty crates marked 'Dance', for 99 cents each! When I find a record store like this I go immediately to the crates on the floor and I don't even look at the stuff lining the shelves. I must have bought 25 or 30 records from that store that day.

Thinking a number of people might want to get on this:
Finally! I’ve been working with Dark Entries for nearly five years on this Man Parrish soundtrack reissue — it’s incredible (think: ‘bathhouse E2-E4’) and you should def check it out https://t.co/4PE4SlU8dY— Liz (@schlockvalue) October 7, 2022
