we've never done this have we? was trying to get my head around how to structure it - seems unfair to lump, say, hip hop and techno and rock producers all together but am apprehensive about splitting up by genre (where would George Clinton fall, for example? or Moroder?) Could do it by decade, I guess, and then poll all the decades against each other. Nominations thread would just get out of hand quickly, I would guess

one winner per decade would also have its disadvantages (I doubt Spector would win the 60s poll, but seems insane that that would disqualify him from a vote in the finals)

Might be an interesting #11 in this series - Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls .15 or 20 spots on the ballot, count down the top 50. Maybe I'm flogging these mail ballots too hard, but they seem like fun.

yeah maybe, was just trying to see if there was any interest or opinion on how it would hypothetically go
― winoa ryder sexes creatures of the night (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 June 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
Producers would be a fun one imo. I could see a dozen legit choices for #1.

yeah I could make a list but a decent 50 probably wouldn't cover it...? or maybe it could, I dunno

I like this! I wonder though, given how many (most?) producers are also songwriters, should the two be merged? Or should we judge people solely on the quality of the production part of their work.
― daavid, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)
yeah artists who self-produce really well but rarely produce other artists bring in a bit of a gray area

This is a great idea. I could see doing it by decade and then allowing the top ten from each to be eligible in a master poll. I guess in depends on how far you want to draw it out. But this would be a fun one to go in depth on, IMO.

songwriting is a different thing imho

I'm afraid that if I do the 50 poll options by decade thing I'm gonna forget/mistakenly omit people (especially for certain decades)...?
― winoa ryder sexes creatures of the night (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
mixing producing and songwriting seems weird and wrong to me
I'm afraid that if I do the 50 poll options by decade thing I'm gonna forget/mistakenly omit people
nice thing about email ballots is that it puts the blame on forgetting/omitting on everyone else, not the showrunner

^ I'm thinking mainly on producers for 'manufactured' pop acts like, say Xenomania (who I will surely nominate). The issue is, part of what I really like about them is their songwriting. So the question is: should I vote for them purely on THE SOUND of their records or for their melodies, etc. as well.
― daavid, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)
...same thing could apply to Phil Spector, Leiber & Stoller, etc.

I would say you're voting for the producer based on the music that was released bearing their name in that particular role. if that overlaps with songwriting, beatmaking, "instrument treating", whatever. the producer role is pretty wide and people approach it differently. some producers are very hands-on with the material and others are not, I don't see why this should matter really. you're voting on the body of work.

great idea!
i really can't imagine what the ILM producer poll top 10 would look like
what about artist/producers?
electronic music?
― Crackle Box, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)
xxxpost- OK that makes sense. Thanks. I still think it's not completely irrelevant tho because a so-so song can have a great production job and vice-versa. But I agree with your criteria.
― daavid, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)
okay didn't read thread
i think a straight up producer of all time poll would be most interesting, anyone with a production credit can get nominated
leave it up to ppl to decide what they think being a producer means, having a tight criteria seems like a silly idea here
