Which Black Sabbath vocalist should I name my new hamster after?

Ozzy is obviously the classic vocalist, sang on some amazing records and had a few great solo records of his own, really important artist to me as I was getting into music. Unfortunately, he's done a pretty good job of running his reputation into the ground, even with me. Dio, on the other hand, is one of the greatest all-time vocalists, sang on a bunch of classic albums himself, and apparently a really nice guy. Don't know if it's a great name for a hamster, though. What do you think, ILM? I'm getting him on Saturday, so you have until then. Here's a picture:

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

And you can just call him Geez when you're drunk.

What if I don't drink?

I don't know what he's standing on, I think it's an upturned food bowl. The breeder took the picture.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

I don't drink. I was just offering a potential scenario. I still think it's a good name for a Hamster. Much better than Biff Byford for example.

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

I gotta cosign Doran's points re: Geez.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

Hamsters have breeders? Hamsters need help breeding? They are unique in the rodent kingdom if this is true.

The idea of a hamster named Tony Martin amuses me greatly.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

Congrats on the new ham, J3ff!
My family had an unusually stupid ostrich named Ozzy, it died getting eaten by dogs, so I think of it as an unlucky pet/animal name.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)

You had an ostrich?

Hellhamster 2: Hamster Smashed Face (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

My family had ostriches, emus, and rheas because they were part of this weird pricing bubble at the start pf the early '90s. One of the many weird investments my dad has made over the years and basically broke even on.

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

did this have anything to do with the ostrich burger craze of the time?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

I know my dad read some article in the newspaper about how much $$$ ostriches were selling for and he got dollar signs in his eyes, so that's why he got into it. None of them were for meat production. We had a bunch of incubators in our living room, and any one that lived past a year, he'd sell to other people in the same situation as him, people breeding ratites and selling them to other ratite farmers, who were then selling them to other ratite farmers. They were selling for $20k-$50k at one point. I found an article on JSTOR about the U.S. pricing bubble that says:

In summary, high expectations of ostrich productivity and overestimates of demand for ostrich products influenced prices early in the evolution of the
industry. Industry information promoting the relatively scarce ostrich as "revolutionary," due to its purported high productive efficiency and large
potential markets, likely contributed to the high initial prices. Subsequent price decreases occurred as investors gathered more information about actual
productive efficiency and the relatively slowly developing markets for ostrich products. The combination of "new industry" arguments and lack of
information provides insight into the high prices early in the industry's evolution. However, without also considering the role of speculation in the
industry's evolution, these arguments do not justify the average 1993 price of $25,523 for a mature breeding ostrich.

The effects of this for me, as a kid, was that a lot of our yard and house were taken up by ostriches and ostrich-raising stuff. It lead to a lot of good and sad childhood memories: baby ostriches dying in my hands, an ostrich kicking my pet rabbit to death, and getting to go on nice road and camping trips with my dad across the western U.S. to deliver ostriches he'd sold to people.

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

Sorry to take over the cutes kvlt hamster thread, I guess I had a lot to say about ostriches (as always).
