this has already been done Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968 (Original Compilation Album / CD1) Poll

did all four from the first and second set.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

This collection may be the hardest to poll too!

Went with 'Psychotic Reaction'

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

also did this:

NUGGETS: The battle of #1 Poll
NUGGETS II: The best #1

Bee OK, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry. Will do the third box, and then poll off all three. Did search, but when it wasn't in the first couple of screens I foolishly assumed it hadn't been done. Stupid of me.

Trudi Styler, the Creator (ithappens), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

The Seeds - a great song that sounds nothing like the rest of this list (or anyone else).

timellison, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

either Nazz or The Knickerbockers

Darin, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

xpost The Seeds album with "Pushing Too Hard" includes lots of songs that sound exactly like it if that means anything.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I meant anybody else. Totally distinctive sound. The Doors had a little of it with the organ and electric piano playing the bass, but everything else was different.

It's a band that features Todd Rundgren and that song is awesome, too.
This is some formative shit right here.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 30 June 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

Too difficult... hold on... how did I vote in the other poll...

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Thursday, 30 June 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

... all I did in the other thread was quote some lyrics from "Moulty", so no clue there. "Nuggets" is on the jukebox in a pub I drink in, and I always put "Moulty" on, so maybe I did vote for it...

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Thursday, 30 June 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

i love todd rundgren, but that nazz song might just be the best thing he ever did.

I always have time for a Nuggets poll. Gotta go with "Liar Liar" though!!

Mount Cleaners, Friday, 1 July 2011 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

The Strangeloves: "Night Time"
The Seeds: "Pushin' Too Hard" (
13th Floor Elevators: "You're Gonna Miss Me"
Count Five: "Psychotic Reaction"

gotta be one of these I think. it's a toughie.

dmr, Friday, 1 July 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

The award for the most convincing Beatles mimicry goes to The Knickerbockers. "Most Influential" goes to The Leaves. For the best pop-psych Nugget we have a tie between Sagittarius and The Nazz. The runners up for the garage nugget crown are the Electric Prunes and the Seeds. But the winner for this collection has to go to "You're Gonna Miss Me."

too many classics so i'm revisiting the others and it's The Magicians vs The Magic Mushrooms

herbal bert (herb albert), Friday, 1 July 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

someone always says it, but this is impossible. 10+ songs i have to vote for:

The Electric Prunes: "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)"
The Strangeloves: "Night Time"
The Seeds: "Pushin' Too Hard"
The Remains: "Don't Look Back"
The Castaways: "Liar, Liar"
13th Floor Elevators: "You're Gonna Miss Me"
Count Five: "Psychotic Reaction"
The Leaves: "Hey Joe"
The Chocolate Watch Band: "Let's Talk About Girls"
Sagittarius: "My World Fell Down"

flopson, Friday, 1 July 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

the 'Acid Dreams Testament' comp is my Nuggets Jr jam.

my first Nuggets were the 80s LPs, should poll Vol.1 The Hits

01 - The Leaves - Hey Joe
02 - The Electric Prunes - I Had To Much To Dream Last Night
03 - The Five Americans - I See The Light
04 - The Standells - Dirty Water
05 - The Human Beinz - Nobody But Me
06 - The Blues Magoos - We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet
07 - The Barbarians - Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl
08 - The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard
09 - The Music Machine - Talk Talk
10 - The Count Five - Psychotic Reaction
11 - The Balloon Farm - A Question Of Temperature
12 - The Nazz - Open My Eyes
13 - The Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind
14 - Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues

alot of crossover but Blue Cheer or Music Machine would stir up the pot.
'A Question of Temperature' might be my #1 nug

herbal bert (herb albert), Friday, 1 July 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

"My World Fell Down" is in a league of its own here. Even though there are other great songs, that song is probably the best thing on the entire "Nuggets" series.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

^ this is almost certainly true, but only if you are a geir

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

Blue Cheer – Summertime Blues

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

also loved the 2nd "punk" installment, vol. 6:

Mouse & The Traps – Public Excecution
Captain Beefheart – Diddy Wah Diddy
Nightcrawlers, The – My Little Black Egg
Brogues, The – I Ain't No Miracle Worker
Unrelated Segments, The – Where You Gonna Go
Black Pearl – Forget It
We The People – Mirror Of Your Mind
Shadows Of Knight, The – Oh Yeah
Steppenwolf – Sookie, Sookie
Chocolate Watchband, The – Sweet Young Thing
Grass Roots, The – Mr. Jones (Ballad Of A Thin Man)

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

The award for the most convincing Beatles mimicry goes to The Knickerbockers.

There's something to this but I'm puzzling over it. Which Beatle songs does it sound like? The Knickerbockers' Wikipedia page says, "The song is most famous today for being blatantly derivative of contemporary songs by The Beatles, down to the imitation of John Lennon on the lead vocal and the Paul McCartney-style vocal whoops before the guitar solo and later in the song."

I never thought the lead vocal sounded particularly like Lennon. Always thought the Beatle element was in the composition somewhere but, as I said, I can't put my finger on it.

timellison, Saturday, 2 July 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

if you don't hear it, you don't hear it, but i think almost every element of "lies" screams beatles pastiche. and the lead vocal sounds a hell of a lot like early lennon to my ears. thought this within a few seconds the first time i heard it.

Looking for that #Swagu? (contenderizer), Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's there. I still can't figure out which Beatles songs it comes from, though!

timellison, Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

Well for starters, the way they sing the word "Lies" is pretty similar to "Help". And the part "to lead me on this way... hey" is kind of reminiscent of "I can't hide, I can't hide".

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

The "Help!" one definitely. There's some Beatle thing in the "Some day you're gonna be lonely" part - some melodic thing plus the wordless background vocals.

timellison, Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

^ yeah, this. you have to imagine the star club beatles tearing through an amped-up version of "i wanna hold your hand" to really get the gist. it's more a pastiche of beatles-y moves than a straight rip of any one song.

Looking for that #Swagu? (contenderizer), Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

(meant as a response to wk)

Looking for that #Swagu? (contenderizer), Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

no, I know what you mean Tim. I was thinking about that "Some day you're gonna be lonely part too". I feel like there's a Beatles song where they use that exact rhythmic phrasing on something. Or I guess there are a bunch of songs where they they do a really straight quarter-note feel on the verse with a simple, sing-song-y major key melody. Like "last night I said these words to my love", or "and when I touch you I feel happy inside"

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

so yeah, overall I guess it's heavy on the Please Please Me crossed with Help, but with a later Beatles, heavier guitar sound.

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

Oh the "some day you're gonna be" part also sounds a lot like "ooh I need your love babe" from Eight Days a Week. And the part where they go up and sing "lies" in a falsetto at the end of the chorus sounds kind of like the little falsetto "ooh" toward the end of Misery.

Ktulu says, I've come to hate my body (wk), Saturday, 2 July 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, wow. The "Eight Days a Week" one is not only the same melodic contour, it's the exact same notes. (The descending third is F#, E, D. In "Lies" it's over a B minor chord, but in "Eight Days a Week" it's over D major.) Good call on the "Misery" one, too.

timellison, Saturday, 2 July 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

"Lies" and "One Track Mind" surely sound like The Beatles to me. But they sound more like 1963 Beatles than the (then) contemporary "Rubber Soul" era Beatles.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 3 July 2011 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

Playing it on the guitar. There this C to D thing that IS from "I Want to Hold Your Hand." (If you play guitar and figure the two songs out, you will see what I mean!)

Found a copy of "Vol 2 - Punk" on LP in a sidewalk sale yesterday. Not the best condition but it has a couple tracks that aren't on the CD sets so that's cool.

Psych. Reac.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 4 July 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

The brilliance of "Lies" is that it doesn't ape any one or two particular Beatles songs, but rather is presented as a new song that just happens to sound just like a Lennon "A Hard Day's Night" outtake. The counterpoint-like harmonies, the hyperjealous lyrical vibe, ending a major-key song on a minor chord, and the scream in the instrumental section are all spot-on.

Lee626, Monday, 4 July 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

This is the Lenny Kaye double intact, right? Close, but "Open My Eyes" over Count Five, the 13th Floor Elevators, and Mouse.
