How many MP3 playing devices do you own?

Message Bookmarked

[b]Products such as MP3 players and headphones now represent 8 percent of HMV U.K. sales,[/q]

But what happens when we all have the mp3 players we need? Do we buy another one? Which means, sales of mp3 players will also drop.

What counts? Small ones, phones, laptops, whatever...

ipod and kindle (which only plays on shuffle i believe)

little mushroom person (abanana), Thursday, 30 June 2011 08:41 (thirteen years ago)

I have at least six, mostly defunct, MP3-playing mobile phones, plus and iPod and a PC. And a tiny USB thing. And yet I still use my bog-standard iPod from five years ago because it actually still stores way more music than anything else except my PC.

Matt DC, Thursday, 30 June 2011 08:44 (thirteen years ago)

i bought several, but they are all broken/stolen/lost. tried my best to lose the tmobile G2 (left it in a bar in beijing) but it came back (my friend who lives there went to the bar 3 days later and shockingly they still had it/nobody swiped it and he had another friend who was there who brought it back to the uk for me. amazing)

2 - a cheap MP3 player/flash drive that has a funny idea of what 'shuffle' is, and my mobile (which I don't use as an MP3 player because it drains the battery)

You get nothing for a pair, not in this game (snoball), Thursday, 30 June 2011 09:10 (thirteen years ago)

Lets see now:

Home laptop, which has been used to entertain at a party so that counts.
Desktop upstairs. Both those get used to d/l also, obv.

A Philips GoGear Raga (4GB)
A minidisc player, you can d/l to it..
My Sony Eriksson phone, still has mp3s on it, used thesedays only when I want to bug the kids by playing "Fish Heads" at them... Oh, and that "Most Unwanted Music" track which they still love...

Own like 6 things that can play mp3s (e.g. TV can play them from usb sticks)
Use for this purpose 3 (pc, cowon s9 at work everyday, CDR with mp3s in car sometimes)

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2011 12:18 (thirteen years ago)

Suppose the work portable can too, but I don't own that and I don't even know if there's a sound driver on it.

Sony portable mp3 player thing that I never use

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Thursday, 30 June 2011 12:36 (thirteen years ago)

My phone plays mp3s, but I don't use it to do so because: a) I can never find the proprietary headphones; b) sometimes it randomly decides to play through speakers even if headphones are connected, which is embarrassing on the bus; c) the interface is rubbish.

Got 2 dedicated mp3 players, a new one and a small old one which I keep because it takes AAA batteries (handy spare when I've forgotten to charge the new one) and doubles as a USB drive. Keep both in my work bag but don't listen much now my commute is short.

And 1 Kindle and 1 PSP, which I never listen to mp3s on. And a laptop, which is my usual mp3-listening device, and a desktop at home, and my work desktop (does this count? I don't "own" it but listen to mp3s on it daily).

So, 7 or 8, of which I've actually used 2 or 3 in the past month.

jackoff box recorder (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 30 June 2011 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

PC
netbook
iphone 3gs
sony ericsson x10 mini
sony nw-hd5 mp3 player
iriver clix2 mp3 player
cowon s9 mp3 player
denon dm-38 stereo

I actually listen to MP3s pretty much only on the PC or Cowon player.

Oh, I forgot a CD portable player that plays MP3 discs

Mark G, Thursday, 30 June 2011 13:08 (thirteen years ago)

A Creative Zen and an old as dirt Creative Jukebox Xtra hard drive.
I don't want to but I may eventually have to break down and get an iPod Touch because, sadly, all the other MP3 player choices are dying.

Breezy Summer Jam (MintIce), Thursday, 30 June 2011 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

My only mp3 player is my HTC Desire S and I guess I will get a new one once it's become obsolete. Non smartphone mp3 devices will probably become obsolute because of Spotify and other streaming sites.

1. something generic, almost pre-ipod. i think it held about 32mb. it was heug
2. ipod shuffle (the very first iteration, as well as the best design they've ever had)
3. creaive zen v. pretty slick, but the buttons got pudged w/ dirt and made it inoperable
4. ipod nano - the squat, "ugly" one. pretty nice as well but, like most ipods, it one day decided to die without even a clue.
5. sansa fuze - picked this up at costco. very cheesy interface but it got the job done... the casing started to split tho.
6. sony walkman mp3 - best one i've had yet. tons of options - even karaoke! - w/ a slick, customizable interface.

i'm one of those "fuck ipod" types

kelpolaris, Thursday, 30 June 2011 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

I've never had an iPod die and I've had about four. With wife, also never had one die, we've had about eight.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 30 June 2011 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

1, desktop. I had a portable CD player purchased in 2000 that played mp3-CDs, but in recent months it has become utterly buggered and grinds violently instead of reading the CDs. Come October when I'll have money to burn for the first time since 2004 I'll probably add laptop, phone and ipod to this, though.

Sir Chips Keswick (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 30 June 2011 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

well, i still have my previous 2 portable players (cowon iaudio m5, atmt xseven), plus the current one (iriver lplayer). plus 5 computers. dvd player. and the pvr. and the tv (possibly both of them). and the neuros osd thing. =12.

koogs, Thursday, 30 June 2011 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

I have a Sony Mp3 player of the nwz series from 2007. The newer models are too quiet so I always look for older 2nd hand models in places like Cex. Can usually pick them up for £40 so if they get damaged or stolen its no big deal. I am a tramp in comparison to my 9 year old son who has an i-pad 2 and an i-pod. It still feels like some kind of magic to me to be able to access 8 gb from my pocket. I prefer mp3 players to i-pods because it doesn't take a lot to impress me. Just own one at a time, no more than 8 gig and the best ones for me have been the Sony and Sansa models. My theory is that if you have a 160 gig player, you will always put too much junk on it at the expense of what you really love. When you have memory limitations you are naturally more ruthless with your music rotation.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 30 June 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

Laptop, on which I stopped downloading/deleted all my mp3s about a year ago.

EDB, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

Though I have a supremely crappy 32MB or so mp3 player my mom bought and never used, and I never used, in my room somewhere. But that I don't count.

EDB, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

I have Iphone and Sansa Clip, and use the latter for anything where I care about sound (Sansa Clip + flac seems to be unbeatable for the price). After trying out high capacity iPods, I decided that smaller capacity is actually better, and seem to be just fine with a restricted daily menu. My next player will be based on usability and sound, not memory...

dlp9001, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

currently: two ipod's, one iphone, computer

past: another ipod that died like a year after i got it (used), another ipod mini from 04 or 03 that i loved, a TOSHIBA GIGABEAT, other computers

balls, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

agree w/ smaller capacity is actually better - those ipods are nanos and i just throw a few hours of tracks on there and occasionally delete stuff i'm sick of listening to at work from it. for some reason i don't really put songs on my iphone, the only mp3 i have on there is 'no bulbs' cuz it's my ringtone, if i use it as an ipod (which is very often) it's exclusively podcasts.

balls, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

There are times that a 256 mb thing would be enough (new albums that warrant repeat listens for weeks on end), but sometimes I'm glad I have 32 gb of back catalogues and other stuff on there.

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

I've got some old ones that are retired, and some passed on to the Mrs. But I play MP3s on 3 devices: desktop, iPod, phone.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 1 July 2011 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

4 working desktops at home, one at work (PC)
4 laptops (PC)
3 Ipods
1 Sony
1 Phillips
2 Archos Android tablets
1 Ipad
1 stereo

Probably use 9 of them any given week.

I own a V1 Sansa Clip 2gb where I converted all the mp3s to OGG Vorbis and the sound is still killer, all due to Rockbox. Before I had 300 files, now I have almost triple that amount.

Did you rockbox your Sansa Clip? If you haven't you should.

1. portable CD player thingy that plays MP3 discs
2. dead iPod Classic (60 gig I think)
3. 8 gig iPod nano
4. Cowon O2 - this is what I use for everyday music listening.
5. desktop G4
6. old G3

I'm sure I have some I never use or don't know they're there, but this is what I actually use:

iPod nano 5th gen, 16gb green - my main music player
iPod touch 4th gen 32gb - use it more for apps, like the nano's small size & light weight
iPod nano 1st gen 4gb white - my first iPod which I keep as a backup
laptop computer
desktop pc that i rarely use anymore
car radio that plays MP3 CDs
LG flip phone that I occasionally use for music when I don't have iPod with me
JBL 200id iPod dock that sounds great for its size

Didn't count last one in poll since it's only indirectly an MP3 device

Lee626, Friday, 1 July 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 1 July 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

my phone plays mp3s, but the battery life is shit enough as it is is, so i never use that function.

my ipod is a 160gb one that i bought about 4 years ago, no problems with it, other than the occasional freeze, until recently, the battery has started to go, these things are made to fuck up after a few years so no doubt i'll have to buy a new one soon enough.

Well, that HMV, who were putting their stores central core business into selling MP3 units, might as well not bother, as when we have one, we don't necessarily need another one.

Or, something.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 08:51 (thirteen years ago)

For one thing, I believe these numbers indicate how more disposable/lower quality these devices are becoming. I have a 1st generation Sony CD Walkman - 20 years later - still plays. Many standalone devices will end up on the junk heap when a their sealed batteries fail (or likely, well before).

Another question might be asking how many more music devices do you have specifically for MP3s that you wouldn't have already owned in the older tech era? I have only two - a Sansa Clip and a elcheapo SD card FM transmitter for the "work truck". Sure, several stereo components were purchased with MP3 playback in mind, but no different than buying a CD player-equiped boombox a few years earlier.

suspecterrain, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

1. 2 GB mp3 player (for exercise, commuting and the gym...I believe in exercising DISCIPLINE by limiting the number of mp3s I can carry with me). I prefer CDs when driving, I like the comfort of having a predictable song order.

2. 2 laptops, one for my stereo and one for my bedroom.

3. Desktop downstairs with only small computer speakers.
