Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 08:46 (thirteen years ago)

In this case, Genesis gets my vote without a shadow of a doubt. "Carpet Crawlers" is absolutely gorgeous and one of the highlights of the "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" album.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 08:47 (thirteen years ago)

(And I feel the rest of the list isn't all that strong either - missing some 10cc here)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

Either George Jones or Genesis

President Keyes, Friday, 1 July 2011 08:49 (thirteen years ago)

But how is it possible that "September Gurls" is not here?

President Keyes, Friday, 1 July 2011 08:51 (thirteen years ago)

Louisana 1927 over any other song ever

gospodin simmel, Friday, 1 July 2011 08:51 (thirteen years ago)

aguas de marco

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 1 July 2011 08:53 (thirteen years ago)

not even a question for me here, aguas de marco elis & tom

H in Addis, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:14 (thirteen years ago)

But how is it possible that "September Gurls" is not here?

At this stage, the book seems more like "Let's mention a bunch of tunes that more people should pay attention to" than an actual "canon" list. But, sure, "September Gurls" surely should have been in there. They picked "Thirteen" instead, it seems.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 09:19 (thirteen years ago)

C'mon guys!

Sparks!

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:26 (thirteen years ago)

Quite a few I don't know here. Nearly voted for Aguas De Marco, but plumped for Tom Waits as it's the earliest song by him I truly love. The orchestral version is absolutely beautiful and I don't know why it never got a proper release.

can't be gloomy with halloumi (dog latin), Friday, 1 July 2011 09:37 (thirteen years ago)

voting "No Woman No Cry" oh wait it's not included. also some other major omissions "She's Gone," "Autobahn" "Killer Queen," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Waterloo."

Bee OK, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:39 (thirteen years ago)

"No Woman No Cry" might have been included in the 1975 bunch instead, as the live version is arguably more famous than the original studio recording.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

"Might Have"? You teasin?

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

Well... it isn't....

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

Aguas de Marco, easily.

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 1 July 2011 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

Bizarre choice of songs in this poll

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 10:44 (thirteen years ago)

One of these lists is clearly better than the other.

ephendophile (Eric H.), Friday, 1 July 2011 10:46 (thirteen years ago)

"Needles in the Camel's Eye" is 1973 (xp)

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 10:50 (thirteen years ago)

And "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va" are 1968. Must be some live versions.

President Keyes, Friday, 1 July 2011 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

Mmm seems you're right. Both Here Come the Warm Jets & Taking Tiger Mountain are catalogued on RYM as 1974 so I got confused. Still an important omission from the 1973 list, then.

◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝ (Moka), Friday, 1 July 2011 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

Also true.... Santana versions are live ones so they're null. I was looking at the Lotus album which is in fact a live album. Sorry about those.

Getting worse and worse--notice that radio's almost been abandoned (I count three hits), which tells you a lot. Anyway, as great as "Sweet Home Alabama" is, I'll vote for "Withered and Died."

My own '74 list would add: Aretha's "Until You Come Back to Me," Big Star's "September Gurls," Bowie's "Rebel Rebel," Dionne & the Spinners' "Then Came You," Eno's "The True Wheel," Electric Light Orchestra's "Can't Get It Out of My Head," Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky," John Cale's "Fear Is a Man's Best Friend," Jorma Kaukonen's "Genesis," Neil's "Ambulance Blues," and Steely Dan's "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" and "Pretzel Logic." I expect Stevie Wonder will win, and that'd be a good choice.

clemenza, Friday, 1 July 2011 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

"Autobahn" is a serious omission, tho I suppose it wasn't a hit till '75

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 11:05 (thirteen years ago)

Everything here is dated according to release date, so "Autobahn" would have been in the 1974 list. There will be Kraftwerk later - it seems like they have tried to limit releases per act to a minimum, which explains most of the omissions (but not how they sometimes choose obscure album cuts instead of the most famous ones)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

Well, Stevie Wonder is doing quite well then...

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 11:34 (thirteen years ago)

He's been in each of the previous ones, but not sure if there's anything at all from "Songs In The Key Of Life"

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 1 July 2011 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

"Aguas de Marco" never fails to elevate my mood.

I love "sweet home alabama," but it's like already in the top 10 songs you can't avoid hearing before you die.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 1 July 2011 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

Sparks
Dolly
Skynyrd

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 1 July 2011 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

"Withered and Died", good song, but not the one I would have picked from "Bright Lights"

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

(spoiler alert) "Sir Duke"

ephendophile (Eric H.), Friday, 1 July 2011 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

George Jones

Iago Galdston, Friday, 1 July 2011 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

this is a pretty bad list

Dolly vs. George Jones vs. Sparks

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 1 July 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

Sparks by a long way.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Brutal tug of war between "Aguas de Marco" and Sparks, these two stomp all over the rest of the list.

Stanley Tunechi (Spectrist), Friday, 1 July 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

'Free Man in Paris'

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 1 July 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

águas de março.

Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Friday, 1 July 2011 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

Others missing (funk division): "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)," "Loose Booty" (Sly), "Sexy Ida," "Fire" (Ohio Players), "Everybody Party All Night" (Chairmen of the Board), "Hey Pocky A-Way," and "Red Hot Mama" or "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On."

PlantyMcBristle, Friday, 1 July 2011 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

The performance by George Jones on "The Grand Tour" is well, quite devastating.

jetfan, Friday, 1 July 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

Huh? Steep fall of from last few lists. I'll give a somewhat enthusiastic vote to Free Man in Paris.

that's not my post, Saturday, 2 July 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

No fair showing the picture of ABBA when "Waterloo" didn't make it...

(flowers for) algernon goalkeeper (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 July 2011 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

Aguas de Marco by a huge margin

iatee, Saturday, 2 July 2011 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

One of the two people I've never heard of is going to win this. (Who is Stevie Wright? I mean, I know it's not K-Bob Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s Steven Wright...)

clemenza, Saturday, 2 July 2011 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

He was in the Easybeats.

timellison, Saturday, 2 July 2011 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

No fair showing the picture of ABBA when "Waterloo" didn't make it...

Choosing neutral pics here. Otherwise I could of course have posted the pic of Peter Gabriel as a slipperman. :)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 2 July 2011 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

Others missing (funk division): "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)," "Loose Booty" (Sly), "Sexy Ida," "Fire" (Ohio Players), "Everybody Party All Night" (Chairmen of the Board), "Hey Pocky A-Way," and "Red Hot Mama" or "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On."

Then again, this is "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die", not "1001 Funk Tracks You Must Groove To Before You Die".

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 2 July 2011 10:17 (thirteen years ago)

not even sure "Free Man in Paris" is the "best" song on here but gd it's my favourite

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 July 2011 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

"Ain't No Love..." is perfect. So, that.

Can't vote for Stevie 3 years in a row.

Want, specifically, thread:

"1001 Funk Tracks You, yes You, Geir, talkin to you, Must Groove To Before You Die".

Mark G, Monday, 4 July 2011 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

Of course, when the song "Land of a 1000 dances" exists, what is dance 1001?

Mark G, Monday, 4 July 2011 10:38 (thirteen years ago)

Sparks

zeus, Monday, 4 July 2011 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

legitimately bummed about the lack of Eno or Neil or Big Star here; Sparks is great but is getting a lot of love so I'm going to throw a vote to Richard & Linda Thompson

Last Friday Night (G.T.F.O.) (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 4 July 2011 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 4 July 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

Least predictable results so far. Voted for George Jones btw.

President Keyes, Monday, 4 July 2011 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

Voted Patti Smith and v v pleasantly surprised to see I wasn't the only one!

Frogbs Day Afternoon (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 July 2011 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

Then again, this is "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die", not "1001 Funk Tracks You Must Groove To Before You Die".

While true, I find grooving to these songs a much richer life experience than hearing the Sparks, Genesis, or Newman tunes. ("Sexy Ida" and "Fire" do make the extended list in the book's appendix.) And it's a shame that during such a massively rich year for the funk sub-genre only earns one spot on the big list (Wonder).
