went for Actually It's Darkness - for me it is head and shoulders above anything else they did.

what confounds me is that there at least two Idlewild threads on ILM when various people say they sound like REM! I'm not hearing that at all.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 1 July 2011 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

Man this is band that went rapidly downhill after a couple awesome records. Hope is Important and 100 Broken Windows were fantastic, The Remote Part was a really good record too but it unfortunately pointed the way to their decline. I've not even bothered to listen to anything past Warnings/Promises. Maybe some of you can tell me if I need to bother.

I'm tempted to vote for "Little Discourage", but arguments can be made for "Shapes" for sure. I guess I haven't heard the pre-Hope singles either.

Aaahhhh.....

You know, I used to be up on all this music biz and all that, but with Idlewild, I kind of know what they sound like, but looking at that list I go: "nope, can't recall any of them"

What does this mean?...

(Yeah, I know)

Love these and that album so much I wonder why I never went backwards to Hope. I think maybe I heard it once and judged it too punk, not poppy enough - that would make a tidy three bears aesthetic, Remote is not punky enough, Windows is JUST RIGHT.

ledge, Friday, 1 July 2011 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

Windows is JUST RIGHT.

This is so true.

Was never much of a fan but agree with ^^ sentiments.

This band is a total blank to me, the only thing I know about them is their singer is called Roddy Woomble

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

Which has to be his real name, who'd change it to that?

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

I reckon he added an extra 'o'

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 1 July 2011 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

"Whattaya say the two of us head back to my place for a bit of a roddy woomble?"

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 1 July 2011 13:41 (thirteen years ago)

"Rddy Woomble" (xpost)

Mark G, Friday, 1 July 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Rod Dywomblé

I really liked 100 Broken Windows at the time, though I haven't listened to it (or thought about it, really) in years. As memory serves, "Actually It's Darkness" was the standout there, so that'll get my vote. Maybe I'll break it back out later.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 1 July 2011 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

100 Broken Windows is one of those albums were nearly every song could've been a single. classic stuff. going for Little Discourage. What a run of singles this was: Little Discourage
, Actually It's Darkness, These Wooden Ideas, Roseability, You Held the World in Your Arms, American English

roseability probably.

Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Friday, 1 July 2011 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

"Ro-oh-ohse....ability...there is no roseability"
Huge credit for making some preposterous lyrics sound downright anthemic.
"And Gertrude Stein said 'that's enough' / I know that that's not enough now."
Agree, though - incredible run for a couple of albums there...

I liked/loved the first couple of singles/eps, esp Captain- quite noisy things they were, then never really got into any of the long players. i was one of the ones who thought they sounded a bit like REM. Couldn't articulate why now and can't be bothered going back to listen to the records to find out- presumably because they sounded like jangly ole REM. Can't remember what record that was and the impression as each record came out was so mediocre, dull and entirely worthy that I have not interest in finding out. So anyway Film for the Future. A good song for angry dancing in your room.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 2 July 2011 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

satan polaroid. were it a poll of all their tracks it would be hard to choose b/w self healer and annihilate now. in fact, captain could be my favourite EP of all time.

attention to thee tail (electricsound), Saturday, 2 July 2011 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

the singles from the third album do get props for having really good b-sides. out of routine is one of their best songs.

attention to thee tail (electricsound), Saturday, 2 July 2011 04:20 (thirteen years ago)

I like a whole bunch of these, up to "Love Steals Us...".

THIS IS SATIRE BTW (Simon H.), Saturday, 2 July 2011 05:53 (thirteen years ago)

I remember *really* loving Out Of Routine and playing it on repeat for ages. Enjoying revisiting all of these, but dunno what I'll pick.

This is such an unremarkable band to me. Vocalist must have one of the most mediocre sounding voices ever.

Revisiting this stuff after this poll, and 100 Broken Windows is really great, start-to-finish. Vocals definitely not mediocre.

Walter Galt, Sunday, 3 July 2011 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

Weird to think people were comparing this lot to Fugazi, Husker Du at one stage

REM yes, but they were never that tight to come close to any of them
