Discussion from first thread:

Lexis - "Hypnotise (Autechre Slow Mix)" is flyyyyyy.

― Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Sunday, July 3, 2011 7:00 PM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Wow - I've hardly heard any of these. I'm the worst biggest fan ever.

― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Monday, July 4, 2011 2:36 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Would love a 23 Mixes for Cash style comp though.

― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Monday, July 4, 2011 2:36 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Stereolab one is Refractions in the Plastic Pulse (Feebate Mix) according to my records - and probably the winner, although at least a dozen of these are gold.

― ledge, Monday, July 4, 2011 2:46 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

DL, before looking for these, I'd probably only heard 8 of these, so no worries. (I.e. it's really surprising how many remixes the guys have to their name.)

― Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, July 4, 2011 11:29 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Finally managed to check my detailed files, afraid you missed a few:

Jimi Tenor - Take Me Baby (Fucked Up remix)
Cylob - Sanq (Autechre mix)
Mari Hamada - Aira Kawaya
Schaft - SKF10047 mixed by Autechre
Silvania - 1belm (Autechre mx)
Mark Broom - any no. between 1&17 (autechre remix)
Gescom - Mag Æ Remix
Nightmares on Wax - Sal Batardes (Purple Mix by Autechre)

None of them real contenders, but Cylob is not bad and the Mari Hamada one is pretty lovely.

UNIQUE 3

― nakhchivan, Monday, July 4, 2011 3:48 PM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

2007 innit.

There's also Viral Rival rmxd by Ae which is awesome, and some keynell mixes, do they really count though eh hmmm.

― ledge, Monday, July 4, 2011 3:50 PM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

I know I missed a few (not listed in discogs.com):
Mari Hamada - Aira Kawaya
Jimi Tenor - Take Me Baby (Fucked Up remix)
Schaft - SKF10047 mixed by Autechre
Silvania - 1belm (Autechre mx)

But these *are* included in the list above:
Cylob - Sanq (Autechre mix)
Mark Broom - any no. between 1&17 (autechre remix)
Gescom - Mag Æ Remix
Nightmares on Wax - Sal Batardes (Purple Mix by Autechre)

The Cylob is listed under Kinesthesia, which I guess is a different recording name of his.

oh, I never knew that Kinesthesia was Cylob- I loved that "Everybody Thought We Were German" track of theirs, awesome stuff

Saint Etienne - Like A Motorway (Skin Up, You're Already Dead)
- Mellow piece somewhere between Incunabula and Amber, good for a hazy summer's day. B
The Higher Intelligence Agency - Speech3 (Conoid Tone Reformed By Autechre)
- what did you SAY? Tight near-random snare hits and the sinister sample make this a disturbing night-time listen. B+
Palm Skin Productions - Evolution Of The Beast (Autechre Mix)
- Jazz. C
Buck-Tick - Iconoclasm (Don't X Ray Da DAT Mix)
- A lack of development. C
DJ Food - Sexy Bits (Ae 9V Mix)
- Nothing is worse than having a funky itch you can never scratch. B
Beaumont Hannant - Psi-Onyx (Psix Million Dollar Myx Oscar Goldmans Bonus)
- Midnight in the concrete underpass. B+
Soft Ballet - Jail of Freedom (Jailtilsli)
- Terrifying monster growls and beats. A
Slowly - On The Loose (For Internal Use Only Mix)
- Boring jazz. D
Scorn - Falling (Autechre - FR 13'' Mix)
- zzzzzz tbh. C-
V - Vliezwei (Vliegenbos Morning Reproduced By Autechre)
- badabing badaboom badabing. C+
Lamb - Gold (Autechre Mix)
- Breathy noises and skittery beats fail to hold my attention shocker. C
Mike Ink - Paroles (Autechre Repoles)
- Listening to all of these in order is kinda hard work. Ah finally the string cavalry arrives but it's too late. C
Dominique Dalcan - Aveugle & Sourd (Autechre Mix)
- Terrifying monster growls and beats IN SPADES. WITH BELLS ON. A+
Gescom - KeyNell (Autechre Remix)
- Which one?!
Keynell (AE mixes) EP (side a): 12 bass notes in search of a melody, machined beats, spiralling glass melodies. A
Side b: Trans-Asian railway travelogue (shortwave radio signal breaking up). A
This EP: No bouncing bass, no strings, no chatter - where is the Keynell I know and love? D
Edge Of Motion - Earth Ball (Autechre Rmx)
- Midnight in the mines of Moria. B+
Spacetime Continuum - String Of Pearls (Autechre Mix)
- bom-bom-tish beat, must try harder. C-
Impulse - One-Six-Four-Seven (Numbers Rammed Down My Ear Mix)
- Bounds into the room like a robot labrador. Skitters around aimlessly for a bit and then at only two and a half minutes in, melts my heart with a gorgeous melancholic muffled bell melody. A+

I guess the Seefeel - Spangle remix is too late in date for this poll? Because that's one of my favourite pieces of music forever and I don't even particularly like Autechre. (yes yes I know, will shut up and get off the thread before I'm pelted with rotten fruit and bits of broken synths but I just wanted to express my love for that remix.)

It is awesome but yup, 2003, will be on the next poll (there will be a next poll, I trust?)

Nav Katze - Happy? (Qunk Mix Dub By Autechre)
- ++reverb. C
Kinesthesia - Sanq (Mix By Autechre)
- Clank clank clank whirr + unexpected 'flute' element. As with many of these, sticks around on the same register for too long, the short descending chord sequence in the middle redeems it somewhat. B
Mark Broom - Any Number Between 1 & 17 (Autechre Mix)
- untz untz untz, pretty much. C
Autechre vs Merzbow : Ecobondage [AE Remix]
- Frenetic and nervous, good interplay of rhythm + tone but sticks in the same register for 11 minutes. C
Lexis - Hypnotise (Autechre Slow Mix)
- Classic skittery beats and slow abstract melodies. On tinny headphones atm, would probably really benefit from proper amplification. A-
Stereolab - Reflections In Plexiglass [Autechre RMX]
- aka Refractions In The Plastic Pulse (Feebate Mix), think the other title is just someone's youtube idiocy. Lætitia Sadier tries to lure us into her giant web with hypnotic spider singing. The world falls around our ears. The mouth of hell opens up, Lætitia is the devil. The rest is chaos. A++
Medium - Celsius (Rebuilt by Autechre)
- 3 mins of treading water and then woop, big fat synths playing classic AE chord progressions which slay me every time. They're probably childishly simple, I don't mind. A
Skinny Puppy - Killing Game [Autechre RMX]
- Tape deck experiments. Musique Concrète? Not my area of expertise. C
East Flatbush Project - Tried by 12 (Autechre Mix)
- In which we all ponder the alternate universe where AE are feted hip-hop producers. B
Various Artists - No. 8 (Æ2 Mix By Autechre)
- Fun in the drum shop. "Fun". C
Gescom - Mag 3.1426 (Rmxd By Ae)
- damnit, didn't put this on iphone, gone off youtube. iirc, C
Phoenicia - Odd Job (Systems Mono Version)
- Just messin. C
Squarepusher - Two Bass Hit (AE Mix)
- Free jazz. Suprisingly low on Bass. D
Jürgen Paape - Autechre (TR7AEremix) vs. Jürgen Paape
- boink boink thump thump. C-
Nightmares on Wax - Sal Batardes (Purple Mix By Autechre)
- Kinda funky I suppose. C+

Been listening to a lot of these lately and the closer they get to trad. hip hop the better.

Mag remix = Jeep Beats! Triedx12 = Underwater thug rappin'! But then something like the Merzbow mix is gold too.

http://forum.funkysouls.com/dump/f57t1295n1720.html = 6 disc "comp" of sorts.

Only now started checking some of these tunes out -- damn that Celsius track is aewsome.

The first time I dj'ed in a big event I used this as my opening song:

Mark Broom - Any Number Between 1 & 17 (Autechre Mix)

It was followed by the acid edit of windowlicker... can't remember what I played afterwards... I think I remixed Aaliyah at some point. I was expecting the crowd to be annoyed but their reaction was pretty much the opposite, people weren't dancing but they were delighted with the set and kept asking me for song titles. Anyhoo still have a soft spot for the Mark Broom remixed it but the Keynell EP is one of my favorite things they ever did so...

Tortoise! One of my faves (the To Day Retrieval mix), kind of assumed it was post 1999.

ledge, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 08:25 (thirteen years ago)

Mari Hamada - Aira Kawaya [apparently AKA "Aire (A Mu Onna)"]
- Relatively untreated vocal does a lot of the work here but it's subtly complemented by AE's backing. B
Jimi Tenor - Take Me Baby (Fucked Up remix)
- Almost drum n bass percussion thrown off kilter as Tenor looms in and out of the mix. The disorientating effect is great. B-
Schaft - SKF10047 mixed by Autechre
- Second Bad Vilbel, a beat so good we used it twice (or as near as damnit). C (for effort)
Silvania - 1Belm (Autechre remix "No.1")
- Something going on the the background after the halfway mark that reminds me of 80s pop. Synth swirls remind me of another AE track. C
Tortoise - Ten-Day Interval (To Day Retreival)
- Jazz Gamelan. Not so much the kind of Gamelan I like though. C-
n.b. just listened to the Tortoise original for the first time ever, has a great Reichian vibe lacking in the remix.
Tortoise - Ten-Day Interval (Adverse Camber)
- Isolates the simple piano figure in the background of the original, subjects it to various awful tortures. A-
Gescom - Leritue (Gibber Mix)
- Midnight in the insane asylum. B+
Push Button Objects - Non-Existant (Keyed In By Gescom)
- Electro 4 lyfe. B
Gescom - Viral Rival (Rmxd by Ae)
- Sharp, knotted electronic reed figures at play in a cavernous space. A-

didn't put the splitrmx tracks on iphone (ipod died a while ago). not on youtube.

Did anyone else take "...play at drowning in a sea of indiependance" as a dig at all the derivative/boring idm that they had unintentionally fostered.

Like, hey we can just let this track stagnate for ten minutes and call it a day too.

Buck-Tick - Iconoclasm (Don't X Ray Da DAT Mix)

Pretty rad! Tri Repetae with some funk.

It's hard to pick a single favourite and it looks like this poll didn't get many votes. The Soft Ballet one is one of my faves and the Mari Hamada one is lovely. The Schaft one is basically the same beat as second bad vilbel, no?

Soft Ballet got #11 in the ae ballot poll: IS IT WASHAPOLL? - ILM ARTIST POLL #57 - AUTECHRE - RESULTS thread

I've been meaning to check out some of the links in the buck-tick etc thread...

constant gravy (ledge), Thursday, 24 April 2025 11:11 (one month ago)

I guess this poll just wasn't as popular as the ballot polls - nice to see B-T at number 12 in that big poll, too!

re: Second Bad Vilbel and SKF10047. They use a very similar sound in both tracks. (That kind of squishy machine sound.) Which gives them very similar vibes. But if you listen to them back to back, the beats aren't much like each other. But I find that's often the case with Imai's work - that he's very good at lifting a sound or a vibe, so you think 'oh this sounds like...' but when you go to listen to the thing you think is the original, you can hear it's just the sound / vibe and not the exact beats or notes.

Etherwave, Thursday, 24 April 2025 11:30 (one month ago)

In fact LOLOLOL, it turns out it's the other way around?

SKF10047 was first - the Schaft album came out in 1994, Second Bad Vilbel wasn't released until 1995.

So it's more like Autechre liked the Schaft track so much THEY decided to nick it!

Etherwave, Thursday, 24 April 2025 12:06 (one month ago)

“Play Weissensee Against Im Glück” without a second’s hesitation. 45rpm of course. Top ten all-time Ae.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 24 April 2025 12:07 (one month ago)

So it's more like Autechre liked the Schaft track so much THEY decided to nick it!

very interesting! it was a collaboration, right? "Arranged By, Composed By – Fujii Mixed By – Autechre" does suggest that ae borrowed the sounds.

constant gravy (ledge), Thursday, 24 April 2025 12:40 (one month ago)

Yes, the Switchblade album was collaborations. The whole reason they went to record it in England was to work with different British musicians. If it was Imai, I'd say he asked Autechre to make that sort of sound. But since it's Maki, he's the kind of sound designer who used to drag angle grinders onstage and turn up at building sites to record machine noises.

Listening to Autechre's albums from around that period. Amber is all full of warm, organic, ambient sounds. Not very machine-y at all. But Maki's work from that period - almost exactly that same machine squelch turns up on Piled Higher Deeper from 1993's Incubate.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Autechre had nicked the sample off the obscure Japanese producer, when everyone think's it's the other way around?

Etherwave, Thursday, 24 April 2025 13:18 (one month ago)

Beaumont Hannant - Psi-Onyx (Psix Million Dollar Myx Oscar Goldmans Bonus) 0

Ugh, this one towers over most the rest on this list.

octobeard, Thursday, 24 April 2025 17:33 (one month ago)

xp that beat sounds rather more conventional, and autechre remixes often involve their own sounds and rhythm tracks. oh well we may never know!

constant gravy (ledge), Friday, 25 April 2025 07:38 (one month ago)

No, it was the sound design more than the beat. That specific metallic drill/machine buzz that drives both the Schaft track and Second Bad Vilbel.

Just finding it funny that when folks thought that Second Bad Vilbel was first, everyone was all 'damn they re-used the same exact beat' but once it turns out that Schaft's track was first it's all 'oh well we may never know!'

A Japanese fan has transferred a huge file of loads of scans of interviews with Maki around the time, so I'll let you know if Maki says anything about the Autechtre collab. Apparently when he was a music journalist, he had a column called 'Maki's Angry Column' so if Autechre nicked anything from him, he'd be sure to let us know ふふふ

OK I will shut up about Schaft now and leave the thread to the Autechre fanboys
