"It's a great record; tolkien hated it", said of Bo Hansson's LotR on the "last four records u bought" thread

I think Tolkien would've truly dug early 80's California proto-hardcore bands like the Circle Jerks, but he would've balked after WILD IN THE STREETS and switched alleigance to the East Coast hardcore scene, getting into heated debates regarding the merits of Kraut's first album, AN ADJUSTMENT TO SOCIETY. If you dared mention the Cro-Mags' first opus, THE AGE OF QUARREL to him, he'd spit and say "Doug Holland's a Krishna-sellout!" and probably try to slap you. Then, he'd go pan handling on St.Mark's Place, swapping "tales of the Shire" for beer money.

Actually, I'd reckon Tolkien probably listened to Bach, Wagner and Prokofiev.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

No, actually, he'd be moaning about how the youth of today's music taste is terrible, so that means he'd be listening to Bob Harris on Radio 2, so that means... Dave Matthews Band, yeah?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The Promise Ring

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Would he like the Lord of the Rings box set you bought, or have you not got that yet?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrrr, it never came Graham!! Though my cheque was never cashed so no problem. It was a Lord of the Rings erotic symphony CD (plus a box set of Punk Anthems and Slash-Movie Themetunes)!!! It was the best special offer evah!! JRRT would surely have loved it, just like the Burger King Fellowship of the Nine Figurines.

Pearls Before Swine "Ring Thing"

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 3 January 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Either Olias of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson or a mix disc featuring "The Battle of Evermore," "Rivendell," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Ramble On," "The Road Goes Ever On and On," and "Ring Thing." Probably not Leonard Nimoy's "Bilbo Baggins" though.

steve hise, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh and "The Grey Havens" by Appendix Out. I bet he'd be into that.

steve hise, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

what of Shadowfax, then? not "loud and vain and endlessly repeated"; no "trumpets braying upon a few notes." but also not "slow and blended with an immeasurable sorrow, from which its beauty chiefly came," like all "good" music. a tough call.

j.r.r. would have hated hated HATED Za Frumi.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i guess it goes without saying then that j.r.r. would be none too pleased with radio rivendell.
