Well, not no-one, clearly...

D Train: "You're the One for Me"

Originally #30 in the UK charts, then 3 years later the remix made it to #15. Neither version charted in the US (In fact D Train had 5 top 100 songs in the UK, but only one in the US.)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:15 (fourteen years ago)

John Larkin was an American but "Scatman John" was a European project really.

Everyday is a Whining Choad (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

Manhattan Transfer - Chanson D'Amour (#1 in UK, zilch in the US)

brian da facepalma (NickB), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:21 (fourteen years ago)

Speaking of Moby, if Wikipedia is to be trusted, he's only ever had one single in the US top 100. Contrast that to his 23 singles in the UK top 100, and he may actually be the biggest example of this phenomenon.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:32 (fourteen years ago)

Well, that's what I thought!

As per a lot of american artists that had some fame over here, they came over as part of the US army contingent, liked it, stayed or came back.

Well, him and Geno Washington, anyway.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think he counts as an American artist in the strict sense, I'm sure his career started over here

Everyday is a Whining Choad (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

In the strict sense that he's not American, or not an artist?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:15 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a nice US hits database that works like Everyhit.com?

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:16 (fourteen years ago)

Don't know, it'd be a shame if there wasn't. Everyhit is genius.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:19 (fourteen years ago)

Seems that Everyhit packed in in Feb this year, judging by the number ones list.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:24 (fourteen years ago)

Billboard should do it, but I don't know if they do. Wouldn't be that difficult to do surely?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child (#10 in UK, straight down the shitter in the US)

brian da facepalma (NickB), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 10:26 (fourteen years ago)

Billboard sort of has a database, except it's incomplete and plagued by inaccuracies, just like AMG's. For the UK, this is the best chart site I've ever found:

Bobbie Gentry, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" : #1 in UK; not put on a single in the US (if that counts)

Josefa, Friday, 22 July 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

In which case "I'll Be Waiting" by Diana Ross might also count.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 23 July 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

"I'll Be Waiting" was a single in the US, but it only got to #63 (#1 in the UK), so that's a good one.

Even better is Diana Ross's "Chain Reaction" (1985) which was also a UK #1 but only got to #95 in the US. As an American, I never even knew this song existed until very recently. It has the kind of utterly retro Motown sound that British people seem to like and Americans don't.

I'd say it was kind of mock retro. Yes, it had a Motown feel to it, but it also had synths, drum machine and the Gibb brothers' very characteristic backing vocals in the background.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 14 August 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)
