Nominations Thread for ILX POST-1945 JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (nominations now closed)(includes Spotify playlist)

Seandalai has kindly agreed to do the tabulations , ie the important stuff that's beyond me , so without further ado lets start the nominations and see how that goes.

Will have no limits just now *unless* people get silly and we have to implement that rule. So please use common sense and nominate stuff you want to vote for rather than showing off how obscure you can go. However, I will make a biggish list of noms to start with and then everyone can fill in the important gaps of those artists. No doubt 20 people have different Miles & Coltrane albums for instance. So don't worry about filling in those important albums missing. Same goes for other artists nominated. I like things to be comprehensive as to avoid the shouts of oh album x is missing.

Have fun and feel free to start your campaigning for albums. The best thing about these polls is that you can discover new stuff, whether you're new to jazz or really into it. So please , don't worry if you don't know much, you can use the time between now and voting closing to come up with a ballot. You will enjoy discovering albums you didn't know. Hopefully we can have some really good results.

Apologies to gear if he wanted to run this since he started nominations years ago elsewhere on ilx but nothing came of it. But his nominations thread might help you with ideas.

EDITED TO ADD: A pre-album-era poll will come after this one. The nominations spreadsheet is at https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=tQQSM3avvN3nLk4gFzHWXdQ

wait I thought the Beatles poll was next

i hate it when rats eat my bushels (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Oh sorry, I thought that the bands polls were their own things.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

plus by the time these results are due wont they be over?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

The band polls are their own things. Mark G was kind enough to delay the Beatles results this week while the 50s poll had its rollout (which turned out to be a good thing for the Beatles results, as they were improperly tabulated).

I figure whatever single-artist poll is up the week of this rollout will similarly take a delay.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

Well the results wont be for a while, don't know how long we will keep voting open for, but at least 2 weeks I imagine maybe more if need be. Don't want to put anyone out, so results will roll out when a gap arises. No one has to be put aside just to let us in.

Wait, how do these work -- are we only supposed to nominate stuff not already on the thread or do multiple nominations carry weight?

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

Nominate anything you like that hasn't already been nominated. Makes it much easier for sean & i to get the nominations together.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

No compilations btw. If compilations are nominated please point them out. Live recordings are obviously OK.

Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane
Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

Couple of quick questions/clarifications:

1. Just albums and no comps, so I assume all pre-album jazz is out of the running? This means no Django Hot Club or Louis Hot Fives.

2. No latter day reassessments of material? For example, one could nominate John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard, but not The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings.

Just want to make sure I'm clear early in the process.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure on the 1st part. I think that is something we need to discuss on this thread. Maybe pre-war jazz comps would be ok? We will go with what the majority wants.

As for part 2 - yeah no box sets but the original live albums are totally fine.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

i am pro pre-war jazz comps

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

I kinda want to include the 78rpm guys, but they recorded for the singles market. I vote save 'em for a tracks poll.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

How about simply allowing comps that have no overlap with previously released albums?

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

Andrew Hill - Judgment!
Andrew Hill - Point of Departure

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

Sounds fine. Greatest hits type comps is what we want to avoid really especially when said artists have made albums.
xp

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

ut if you look at Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens, you either talk about the whole massive block of recordings or you are talking about a "greatest hits" of that time period. They are not the equivalent of an album recorded at most on a handful of dates.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

ut=but

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

i think for the pre-war era comps are ok unless most people object. Im fine with it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

I'd like to point out to everyone that Spotify has a fantastic jazz selection, pretty much all the bluenote for a start. So get listening!

Everyone ok with pre 1945 artists compilations then?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

think you need to extend that to cover stuff like the charlie parker savoy & dial recordings

ever feel like you're an ilmposter? (NickB), Friday, 15 July 2011 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

wait, that falls foul of the box set rule

ever feel like you're an ilmposter? (NickB), Friday, 15 July 2011 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

*is this allowed? Technically a compilation of sessions from the late 40s

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, he did have proper albums out. I'd be inclined to say no, however others might disagree.
Were the tracks on other albums? if not then i guess that would be ok.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

It's a bit of a minefield if the Wikipedia entry is anything to go by. The 1956 version seems to be the first outing for the sessions on 12" LP though.

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's canon now anyway

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

well lets see what everyone else thinks and go with the majority.
If these issues occur again we can deal with it on an album by album basis and let everyone on the thread have their say.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:36 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just dreading 80s herbie hancock gets nominated and people say its not really jazz and more electronic.
Or 70s acts albums are more funk than jazz and shouldn't be in it. That will be fun..

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

i see someone has already nommed a spontaneous music ensemble rec, so free improv is included (d bailey turning over in his grave)?

Or 70s acts albums are more funk than jazz and shouldn't be in it. That will be fun..

Yeah, unavoidable though. I was listening to Gary Bartz "Music is my Sanctuary" last night and thinking it's a great album but the main genre difference between it and, say, War is that Bartz played with Miles once upon a time.

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

Obviously it's all subjective, but even though fusion/jazz-funk/jazz-rock/etc albums should be included in the poll, I don't think people should nominate albums where the other side of the equation is clearly more dominant than the "jazz" side, even if they were released by famous jazz artists on established jazz labels. I consciously tried to avoid nominating albums like that, for example the Herbie Hancock electro albums. Just because Herbie plays some keyboard solos on them doesn't mean they're jazz.

One good measuring stick is, how much improvisation there is on the album? If it's more about pre-written stuff than improvisation, then it probably shouldn't be here. There are of course jazz subgenres that don't fit that criteria, but I think it's a good way decide whether or not stuff like 70s fusion albums should be included.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 July 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

so you dont think mahavishnu orchestra should be included but the miles davis rock albums are ok?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'd say yes to that distinction.

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

The Bill Dixon Orchestra - Intents and Purposes
Bill Dixon - Vade Mecum
The Cecil Taylor European Orchestra - Alms/Tiergarten (Spree)

I agree with this, but Mahavishnu orchestra records do have a lot of improvisation -- in fact they tend to do a pretty traditional round of solos over the changes kind of thing. And yet somehow in my mind they're not jazz, and I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's just that they SOUND like prog rock records.

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

i would also add that The Headhunters and The Blackbyrds, despite being on Herbie Hancock & Donald Byrd albums, their own output is infact funk.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay

dave barry (absolutely clean glasses), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Actually I'd also say that Headhunters doesn't really feel like a jazz record for that matter. Thrust moreso.

I especially hope everybody who hasn't heard that last one, the Lewis, will check it out. It is one of the most beautiful, emotional records you will ever hear.

xpost: i know it's considered a classic by some and haven't heard it in 15 years but gave it a few chances then and it just didn't do anything for me except put me to sleep

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

clude the records I've nominated and quit micromanaging the fuck out of this suddenly-joyless experience. ―an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (WmC),
Agree completely. Whoever said earlier that if jazz voters do not consider an album jazz then they simply wont vote for it. All this not allowing albums 'micro-management' will ruin the poll. if it wasn't such a good reminder/help with voting i would suggest not haominations whatsoever. A few albums that have been missed out and shouldn't be since Zappa is allowed: Norah Jones -Come Away With Me Norah Jones -Feels Like Home St. Germain -Tourist Gil Scott Heron -Pieces Of A Man Gil Scott Heron -I'm New Here
Guru -Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 Freestyle Fellowship -To Whom It May Concern Jungle Brothers' -Straight Out the Jungle Sarah Vaughan -Hot Jazz Sarah Vaughan -Summertime Prince -News Prince -Sign Of The Times De La Soul -3 Feet High And Rising Gang Starr -No More Mr. Nice Guy Stetsasonic -In Full Gear A Tribe Called Quest -The Low End Theory New Order -Montreux Jazz Festival '93 De La Soul -Buhloone Mindstate Dream Warriors -And Now the Legacy Begins

BlindWillyPuller, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

this is not a rap poll. and new order? really? sign of the times? naw. Norah Jones might be on blue note, but is she really jazz?

ilm with its new order and prince fanaticism reminds me of all those best ..........'insert genre' albums in the world cds in the early 90s that record execs made sure phil collins & sting were on.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Good call, we should have some Sting on here too.

New Order and Prince are actually the Phil Collins & Sting of ILM. Future mojo icons and multiple front covers await on mojo in a decade.

A month sounds good. There are about a million things on this list I always meant to check out that I would like to give a proper listen to before voting. How many votes do we get btw?

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

All will be revealed on the voting thread, but yeah a month is fine if it means lots of people will be listening to the albums, campaigning, recommending etc on the thread.

We have 710 albums nominated so far

Air - Air Lore

oops yes! thanks!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 29 July 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Norah jones is on blue note. That album is prince's jazz album ,just like the zappa. And why shouldnt jazz rap be in a jazz poll if jazz rock is? And new order did really play that jazz fest but it is a bootleg so i can see why you should not include it. You will get a lot more voters if you allow the jazz rap.

BlindWillyPuller, Friday, 29 July 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

We all agreed no. not one person said yes.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 29 July 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

rap is not jazz
