Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:02 (fourteen years ago)

Strongest list in a while. Torn between Donna Summer, Kate Bush, David Bowie and Steely Dan. Ultimately voting for Bowie.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:03 (fourteen years ago)

Oh boy...

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:04 (fourteen years ago)

The Yes pick is yet another weird prog pick. Obviously prog is about long tracks, and if the authors were to include any prog at all, they should have gone for epics rather than pop songs like "Wonderous Stories". Not that it is a bad song, but it is unrepresentative. "Owner Of a Lonely Heart" would have been more understandable because it represents better what Yes were about at the time (and is perhaps the greatest AOR songs ever made), but including "Wonderous Stories" is just weird.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:05 (fourteen years ago)

Getting awesomely hard, except for my least favourite Bowie song ever. Leaning towards "Stayin' Alive" is my first thought.

dave lool (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:06 (fourteen years ago)

"Owner Of a Lonely Heart" would have been more understandable

Not really, it wasn't released till 1983!

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:07 (fourteen years ago)

This list is kind of underwhelming considering the year, but not without its brilliant songs. It's currently between Richard Hell, Television and Uptown Top Ranking. Oh and Steely Dan. Fuck...

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:13 (fourteen years ago)

This list is kind of underwhelming considering the year

I'd say it's a great list. Personally I could have done without all the punk (well, except for "Peaches", which is a great song), but it has also managed to get samples of greatness from other genres than the two dominant genres at the time (punk and disco, that is).

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:15 (fourteen years ago)

'Wuthering Heights' is '78 surely.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

And yeah, I can't get my head around Heroes or that album - it sounds hopelessly grey.

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

Pistols' '...Queen', because of it's impact at that time. Would be Kraftwerk's TEE for more long term impact.

Servants of the SBankh (snoball), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:18 (fourteen years ago)

Voted Voivods because, well I like it, and I don't think it'll get a lot of votes.

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:19 (fourteen years ago)

re 'Wuthering Heights', according to wiki released 6th January 78 so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:20 (fourteen years ago)

It is labelled as 1977 in the book, but, yes, I thought it was 1978 too.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 10:50 (fourteen years ago)

Oh boy...

Television vs. The K'werk vs. D. Summer... or perhaps Holidays vs. Hurricane vs. Heroes (and that's just the H's)

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 15 July 2011 12:14 (fourteen years ago)

Kraftwerk vs Eno vs Suicide vs Kate Bush vs Donna Summer vs Television vs Bowie... this is hard.

Asamoah Nyan (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 15 July 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

Voted for Ram Jam because I don't want them shut out.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

Strong list yeah, but I can't not vote for "I Feel Love."

ephendophile (Eric H.), Friday, 15 July 2011 12:30 (fourteen years ago)

"Marquee Moon" over both Sex Pistols, "I Feel Love," and "Heroes." I'm a little sick of "Like a Hurricane" right now, and there are other songs from Rumours I'd take instead.

"I could have done without all the punk"--not nearly enough of it! My other '77 favourites: Cheap Trick's "He's a Whore" or "Downed" or "Southern Girls," the Clash's "Complete Control" (no Clash is bizarre), the Germs' "Forming," KC's "Keep It Comin' Love," Ramones' "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" or something from Leave Home, something from Black Vinyl Shoes, Swell Maps' "Read About Seymour," Arthur Comics' "isgodaman," Slaughter & the Dogs' "Cranked Up Really High," and Wire's "Mannequin."

Oh boy. Maybe I'll just think about Ghost Rider vs I Feel Love and ignore the rest.

Fuck it, GHOST RIDER

ever feel like you're an ilmposter? (NickB), Friday, 15 July 2011 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

Donna Summer and the Bee Gees are there (I'd rather have "Night Fever"), but, in terms of a snapshot of the year, disco is as under-represented as punk (allowing that disco would get even bigger for the next couple of years).

clemenza, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

What a year. Went for I Feel Love.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Friday, 15 July 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

clemenza OTM re: Cheap Trick & the Clash (hopefully "Surrender" made the list, at the very least).

Torn between "Stayin' Alive," "Marquee Moon," and "Zombie," but since only one of those is my favorite song by that artist, "Zombie" it is.

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

Oh boy...

That one was a 1957 track by The Crickets, alternatively a 1975 track by Mud. As such, it isn't eligible here.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

..(well, except for "Peaches", which is a great song)....

Whoa! I mean, I like it, but since when was "Peaches" a song? It's more like Proto-rap.

Actually, speed it up but preserve the pitch, and it could be..

Mark G, Friday, 15 July 2011 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

I think I can guess the winner here (will be honest after the vote closes)..

but my rule has been and always will be:

"Marquee Moon" gets my vote if it's an option, whatever the poll. (excpet for "worst" etc, obv)

Mark G, Friday, 15 July 2011 13:24 (fourteen years ago)

If it had been "Night Fever" rather than "Stayin' Alive," it might have been an easier choice. As it is it comes down to Peg v. Marquee Moon v. Go Your Own Way vs. Orgasm Addict vs. Holiday In The Sun for me. Does anyone have a d5 I can roll?

Also, LOL at "Black Petty."

BIG HOOBA aka the stankdriver (Phil D.), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

Whoa! I mean, I like it, but since when was "Peaches" a song? It's more like Proto-rap.

Probably a rare case of a song I like largely because of the backing track.

Who in the hell is Marque Moon??

Call me a prude but I think "and ting" should be thrown at the end of every lyric. "I ain't waitin' unh-uh and ting." "Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home and ting." "A cheap holiday in other people's misery and ting." "I feel love and ting."

Lots of good songs, but it's got to be "Zombie".

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 15 July 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

"I Feel Love" in a squeaker over Television, Ram Jam, and Pistols. Also surprised by no Clash, the lack of "Flashlight," and might offer "Less Than Zero," "Belle," "Sonic Reducer," "Whole Wide World," and/or "Margaritaville" (though everyone has already heard that before they died).

would maybe go for Zombie

voting bat out of hell just cause no one else will it seems

Peepee Soaked Heckhole (zachlyon), Friday, 15 July 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

'i feel love' would win most years.

second only to popcorn (or something), Friday, 15 July 2011 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

Weird how there three Iggy songs. Obvious choices for me would be Buzzcocks, Kraftwerk and Voidoids but I'm going to go with Fela.

I presume after all these polls are done there will be a 'year winners poll.' A poll of the polls. If anyone kept a record of all the polls throughut each year we could do a poll pf all the poll winners for the year, and then do this for each year of ILX existence and then Poll those poll winners and then have the ultimate poll winner of everything. A poll of the polls of the polls.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 15 July 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

Radiohead would still win it tho.

Mark G, Saturday, 16 July 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

good list, particularly with wuthering heights being smuggled in from '78

figure marquee moon will win

voted 'go yr own way'

Fleetwood Mac. So many good ones to pick from though

There's at least ten songs I could credibly vote for here...

in 77 everything is fine (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 16 July 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

"Born for a Purpose" just over "God Save the Queen," two of my favorite life-mission songs ever, basically the flip side of each other.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 16 July 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

And of course Johnny Rotten loved it.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 16 July 2011 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

Though "Stayin' Alive" has a special place in my heart as my first single, along with the Star Wars theme.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 16 July 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

find "Heroes" undeniable tho.

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 July 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

To keep my head from exploding with all the possibilities I went with Heroes in a nod over the Buzzcocks, Television, Eno and Donna Summer.

that's not my post, Saturday, 16 July 2011 05:42 (fourteen years ago)

some other one-hit wonder omissions: The Trammps "Disco Inferno," Commodores "Brick House," Dan Hill "Sometime When We Touch," Alicia Bridges "I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round), and Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive."

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 July 2011 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

Most of those aren't one-hit wonders, though...and ting.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 16 July 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

some other one-hit wonder omissions: The Trammps "Disco Inferno," Commodores "Brick House," Dan Hill "Sometime When We Touch," Alicia Bridges "I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round), and Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive."

Commodores surely weren't one hit wonders, only their ballads became much more famous than funk numbers such as "Brick House".

"I Will Survive" is of course much later than 1977.

DEHUMANIZE YOURSELF AND FACE TO BLOODSHED (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 17 July 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

"how the hell did they go with..." would seem to be the theme of this particular book, exponentially so as they get into the 90s-00s.

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 17 July 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

T'was a single.

Mark G, Sunday, 17 July 2011 08:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i screwed up, i know the Commodores are not a one-hit wonder...also "I Will Survive" will be missing next list...

Bee OK, Monday, 18 July 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

They have picked a lot of album tracks over singles generally (including some obvious "how the hell did they go with..." moments), but in the case of Meat Loaf I guess it was because "Bat Out Of Hell" was a single hit while "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" is more unknown unless you aren't familiar with the album.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 18 July 2011 09:04 (fourteen years ago)

And while we are getting ahead of ourselves regarding more recent times, the 00s picks are so sparse I actually consider doing two-year-polls instead of one-year-polls from the 00s.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 18 July 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

No, stick with this format

Mark G, Monday, 18 July 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

I did another format for the 50s, and probably will for the 00s too. I don't want polls with just 4-5 options.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 18 July 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

OK

Mark G, Monday, 18 July 2011 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" is more unknown unless you aren't familiar with the album.

It didn't do very well as a single upon release, (only reaching #39) but in the US it's long been one of the most played songs on Classic Rock radio.

President Keyes, Monday, 18 July 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

One of the best lists so far... voting 'Uptown Top Ranking'. Only important omission I can think of right now is:
