Well the guitar style on both of those is very surf-influenced, very similar to shat you'd see in early Throwing Muses or Pixies. You may want to check out earlier surf instrumental stuff like Ventures, stuff like Duane Eddy, etc.

ah... totally boppin myself in the head for not thinking of surf influences.. i knew there was nothing particularly ~new~ about the sound, but it seemed like something i couldn't think of any signifier for aside from "sounds like a dude galloping on a horse towards the screen with morricone influences".
