In preparation of this: U Send The Votes - Eye Do The Compiling - PRINCE TRACKS POLL VOTING!I'll skip bootlegs and whatever else with whatever personal exceptions. Going chronological, because why not.NB: I've heard all this music A LOT but it's been awhile since I did a broad/comprehensive survey. Sounds like a fun side project.

And I'd welcome you joining me btw.

Make sure to cover all of this material as well: http://onlybootleghere.blogspot.com/2007/07/prince-work-studio-outtakes-1976-1994.html

This is exciting and I am totally down.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:45 (thirteen years ago)
Holy shit, goldmine. Thanks EH.
― thewufs, Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:48 (thirteen years ago)
(Don't think those links work anymore, but I could be wrong. Still probably pretty easy to find somewhere.)
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago)
They're up and working.
― thewufs, Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
Eric - how much/what of 'The Work' is recommended? Google says there are 39 discs...
(And I know the answer is "All of It", but humour me)
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
When do we start
― harbl bosses (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
I'm definitely more partial to the early stuff (of what I've heard). Some of the outtakes are pretty widely distributed, especially when you dip into the Purple Rain era.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:58 (thirteen years ago)
Not that the later stuff is bad. I love "The Line," and am giving serious ballot consideration to the Paula Abdul version of "U" that he demos in this set.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 14:59 (thirteen years ago)
(Wait. These are all also his early demos of other people's stuff? Like an actual Studio Version of Prince doing Nothing Compares 2 U? And Manic Monday? WTF Awesome.)
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:19 (thirteen years ago)
yup.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:24 (thirteen years ago)
I listened to these nonstop for about 3 months solid back in ... 2003? 2004?
Or wait. Is that Prince on NC2U? It sounds vocally similar to The Family's version. Hmm.
Anyway, forks - when are we getting this show on the road? We're starting with "For You", right?
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:34 (thirteen years ago)
Some of these are The Family versions, iirc.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
was gonna start doing this myself last night and then realized a bunch of my Prince CDs are on loan to a bandmate arggghhhhh
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
spinning for you now
― generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago)
I skipped "For You" :S
Listened to Prince and Dirty Mind. Halfway through Controversy right now.
For some reason I always underestimate Controversy out of his early 80s stuff. Controversy and Sexuality are great and so is Let's Work. Jack U Off is a classic. And even Ronnie, Talk to Russia isn't as ridiculous as I often remember it being.
It suffers from being in between Dirty Mind and 1999, I guess, which are both unimpeachable, imo.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:43 (thirteen years ago)
For You is surprisingly worth the trouble! I generally wrote it off but if you lower expectations a bit it's a hoot.
― generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago)
Ronnie Talk To Russia is a great song, lyrics aside
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago)
Soft and Wet is great! I don't remember the rest of For You
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:09 (thirteen years ago)
Second half of "Just As Long As We're Together" is a really great, atmospheric disco breakdown. I imagine it killing at Paradise Garage.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago)
Rest is pretty good (if dated) too.

"Ronnie Talk To Russia" is like Bad Religion gone new wave with a half cover of "Roll Over Beethoven." I love it.
― harbl bosses (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
you need the "homemade deluxe editions" of his albums through 1990. just google 'em.
― by another name (amateurist), Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
I know I'm sooo wrong but I adore 'For You' ...sure some of it's corny (Baby is hilarious but really sweet) but most of it's great...the sound of a young Prince being let loose in the candy store (also adore the water drums on Crazy You totally ripped of by Andre 3000 on prototype)...
― The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Thursday, 21 July 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago)
the song "Controvery" is my Prince OPO, just perfect in every way.
― sleeve, Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
if I had made a "serious" ballot... yeah me too probably
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago)
as it is it was more fun (and less effort) to entertain myself with the dregs of his catalog
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
did you vote for his Vikings fight song
― PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
haha oops "Controversy"
― sleeve, Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
OH SHIT!!! argh how could I have forgotten this
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:37 (thirteen years ago)
LOL, I want at least one joek ballot in this poll.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
if even one of the songs I voted for places I will LOL
― No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

"when we're dancing close and slow," that's what.
― by another name (amateurist), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:20 (thirteen years ago)
^^^ yes. he played that live when I saw him and it DESTROYED.

― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago)
For some reason I always underestimate Controversy out of his early 80s stuff
yeah, this. This has better Failed Experiments than the other eighties albums.
I don't know what he's doing or meant to say with "Annie Christian" but damn if it isn't endlessly listenable.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
Only song on Controversy that really smacks of the holding pattern the whole LP is accused of exercising is "Let's Work."
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago)
OTM. That's the one which sounds like a dull DM outtake.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:48 (thirteen years ago)
It's actually my second favorite album by him (after Dirty Mind), but I've said that for years. Always thought it was more fun to listen to than any of the later '80s albums.
― xhuxk, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:50 (thirteen years ago)
"Sexuality" EQ'd up seems straight up punk thrash funk no wave bliss.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:53 (thirteen years ago)
and "Private Joy" is straight new wave/thrash guitar bliss.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:55 (thirteen years ago)
So great even LaToya couldn't improve upon it.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:56 (thirteen years ago)
Fine. I'll play it now.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:57 (thirteen years ago)
Also, everyone knows, silly rabbit, you can't jack women off.
― gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:59 (thirteen years ago)
Let's Work rules! He played a bit of that live recently. Private Joy is so so so so underrated. it's amazing.
― I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:59 (thirteen years ago)
oh I'm sure I'd dance to it at a show.
― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)
listening to Parade for the first time in years on spotify. what a weird record.
Girls & Boys might be the best prince song ever
― van ingalls wilder (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 July 2011 01:24 (thirteen years ago)
woah sometimes in snows in april, i forgot how beautiful it is

― youmadin therapy (k3vin k.), Friday, 22 July 2011 03:30 (thirteen years ago)
I don't understand how people can not recognize how great Controversy is; that's probably my second-favorite Prince album after Parade
― PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Friday, 22 July 2011 13:48 (thirteen years ago)
been listening to both s/t and Dirty Mind and besides the nods to new-wave on the latter album, I'm thinking that they're pretty similar. Like I'm thinking "Do It All Night" and "Uptown" would fit in quite well on the second album...
― monogalomaniacal (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 30 July 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
Controversy is dope, i really feel bad that i couldn't find room for anything from it on my ballot
― some dude, Saturday, 30 July 2011 20:24 (thirteen years ago)
so i've been doing this too but not at all chronologically, just going through albums i don't remember or that i've never heard
come is fucking awesome. nobody tells you that.
― preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago)
i discovered that last week too -- very quickly becoming my fave post-SOTT album
― some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:25 (thirteen years ago)
Listening to For You for the first time ever today. I can understand why its taken me this long to get around to it, but there are some really great moments! It may be because I've been listening to so much guitar-based stuff lately, but I'm loving his solos.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:14 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, Come is great.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:26 (thirteen years ago)
Except for maybe "Loose", COME is pretty solid. The title track is magnificent.
― Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:37 (thirteen years ago)
are there any other albums like Prince's s/t where the singer sings the entire album in falsetto?
― Lesbian has fucking riffs for days (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 November 2013 05:31 (eleven years ago)
Most of Curtis Mayfield's 70s albums, I think?
I've never listened to a Sylvester album from the beginning to the end, but I'd assume they're all falsetto too, since that was his trademark.
― Tuomas, Monday, 18 November 2013 06:55 (eleven years ago)
most of tiny tim's albums, i assume, having never listened to any of them.
― i play too fast (which is the sign of an amateur) (fact checking cuz), Monday, 18 November 2013 08:41 (eleven years ago)
The Stylistics albums
― g simmel, Monday, 18 November 2013 10:31 (eleven years ago)
Bronski Beat?
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 18 November 2013 12:45 (eleven years ago)
Nah, at least on the first album there's one tune where he sings with his normal voice.
― Tuomas, Monday, 18 November 2013 12:54 (eleven years ago)
(i did end up listening to all these but sure did a shitty job of writing anything about it)

^this album from 1984 is very low budget poppy electronic r&b with a ton of falsetto vocals.
― brimstead, Monday, 18 November 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago)
