ILM Top 100 Records -- Please Read

howdy all,

so, after some discussion with tom, i've devised the full plan. the name of this here poll is the i love music top 100 records, where a record can mean anything from a single to a boxed set, a combination of the two strands of polls out there -- singles and albums -- and also allowing for the inclusion of greatest hits records and boxed sets.

so, the rules:

- you'll have 200 points to divide between 40 records (as defined above) and no record can receive more than 20 points.

- in order for the record to make the top 100, it must be mentioned at least twice, no matter what it's point total.

- responses should be sent to the e-mail address in the signature, ilmtop100@hotmail.com. with so many records being picked, it'd get to be a bit of a mess if people responded here. don't fret, though, as your choices may very likely be used, along with your introduce yourselves posting, on an ilm website tom proposed.

- this particular thread, though, can be used for any questions or, as tom's suggesting to me right now, lobbying for your favorite, reminding us of something we may have forgotten.

voting will end in a week, may 10, though that's not set in stone. so be sure to cast your vote and do so wisely.

E-mail me to get an anti-rockist bloc vote together, then ;)

Tom, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, how do we decide who votes in this? Do you have to be a poster or just someone who reads this? Because me and a lurker mate are becoming a Holy Bible-bloc but then I realised that she doesn't post at all, so perhaps she might not be a good candidate for voting.

Ally, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mixing singles and albums in the same poll is is an unusual idea. What was the ethos behind this? I can understand seperate polls but to mix it up is like comparing Oranges to Apples.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the rules: - you'll have 200 points to divide between 40 records (as defined above) and no record can receive more than 20 points.

Does this mean Tom will compile a "dean's list" and write a lengthy essay scolding the contributors for their selections? ; )

scott plagenhoef, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry for being a bit thick (it is 1:34 AM and I'm tired) but could you put up a sample submisssion? Before I submit mine and cock it all up.

DG, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the deadline for this?

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are Tom and Fred even reading this?

;)

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah I'm reading this. Nothing to do with me though!

(DV: May 10th I believe.)

Tom, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"voting will end in a week, may 10, though that's not set in stone. so be sure to cast your vote and do so wisely. "

So there's that answer. HOWEVER I think Fred is purposely not answering the other questions because he wants to obstruct and skewer the vote. For the person who wanted an example, this is how I did it:

Artist, Album Name - 10 (or whatever score)

The only time I specified if it was a single or an album/box set was when the single and the album have the same name, ex. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA or Manics Everything Must Go (note: I didn't actually vote for either of those. I refuse to divulge my votes! ;)

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since it's a lotta work to come up with 40 records you really love, I'll make it easier for everyone by suggesting they only come up with 39 records they really love, and give the other spot to "I Got Erection" by Turbonegro.

Otis Wheeler, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES I AM READING THIS.

sorry, was just in a meeting for an hour and a half, in a hot office, where a symphony of drills and saws tortured the ear.

anyhow, deadline question answered. ditto the question about format.

otis, it sounds like you're trying to form a pro-turbonegro faction. GOOD LUCK.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

some more specifics on formatting: don't use a "the" before the band name, just give the name. also, i'd appreciate it if you didn't number the choices.

and that is all.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're forbidding "the"? Wasn't the elimination of capitals bad enough?

Nicole, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fred what happens if you want to vote for The The - Soul Mining or The The - infected.

DJ Martian, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I voted for 18 records...I hope to see individual lists also. Please vote for Poison!

james e l, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fred is some kind of crazy anti-grammar Nazi. And notice how he fails to answer MY question. I swear, between this and the whole "No one has any objections!" debacle, I'm the invisible woman.

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DON'T FUCK WITH ME!!!

questions:
ally, whomever reads ilm is welcome to send a list.
dj martian, the the would become the.
scott, the replies will be STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. until they're leaked onto the net.
nicole, yes and no. vowels next.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we please explain why the word "the" is now unacceptable though? I mean, for an awful lot of bands, it's PART of their name. It says so on the side of the record. It seems like extra work that we all now have to remember that "The Who" should be "Who" or some such. Jesus. Just throw out my answers please, they were sent in begrudgingly but now I don't want any part of this. That's the stupidest rule I ever heard of, the more I think about it. I should send in a new ballot, putting the word "The" in front of everything, even "Madonna".

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't get it. What's the point of this? Either "Stankonia" or "Since I Left You" will win it anyway. Wouldn't it be more interesting for people just to talk about the music they like? Anyway, to save me the bother of sending you an email, I give 5 points to each of the singles in the UK top 40 right now.

Greg, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

From now on I am referring to fred as The Solinger.

Nicole, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, greg, no one's *making* you reply. and i will say that so far no one has said either stankonia or since i left you.

i think people *already* are talking about the music they like, given the posting increases in the past few weeks, moreso than ever. it's not as if we're putting a moratorium on posting until this is over. feel free to talk about the top 40, there's even a thread for it as i'm sure you well know.

greg scarth, you are a prickly pear.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and to settle the the "controversy": i'm using excel to sort the list and i find it a lot easier when there isn't a "the" in front, especially since some people use it and then others don't. i have nothing against the article: why, amongst articles it is my clear favorite. no one has to abide by this rule: i've eliminated the "the"s so far and will continue to do so. all i'm asking is for a little charity.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Solinger. I love it, it's so guido. I want to be The Ally from now on. Ally like Alley Cat, not Ally like The Allied Forces, mind you. Though The Ally as in wartime allies would be very cool too.

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and by the way - there isn't a thread about the top 40 meaning the chart top 40, if you bothered to read it.

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the Pop-Eye thread is supposed to be about the chart top 40.

Patrick, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the idea of being The Ned. Sound like a Doors tribute band that can't spell.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone pls. include some of the following on their lists: Britney Spears, Lucky; Shanks and Bigfoot (mixed by), Ministry Of Sound: Ayia Napa; Who, Live At Leeds; Velvet Underground, Loaded; Rodan, Rusty; Fall, Bend Sinister; Destiny's Child, Survivor (album; Missy Elliot, Get Ur Freak On; Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP; KC and JoJo, Crazy.

That is all.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was so overwhelmed by the listing thing that i ended up putting down the titles of stuff on the first five tapes i fished out of the glove compartment - otherwise i may have gone for the 'important' stuff

you guys are the librarians of rock

Geordie gets Scientifik, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

about 10 ballots in so far, and in all honesty, it's a good list, the best list of its kind i've ever seen (love that top 3 in particular). i don't want to say too much about it, but there are only 2 "usual suspects" in the top 20.

a note to those of you who've submitted ballots with LESS than 40 records -- IMPORTANT.

with 40 records and 200 points, the ratio works out to 5 points an album, which ensures that the voting is even and that the limit of 20 points votes is 8.

so, if you've submitted less than 40 albums, i've had to readjust the number of points you're working with. for example, if you submitted 10 albums, all of which you gave 20 points, to keep that 5:1 ratio working, i've given you 50 points to work with and all of the albums you submitted received 5 points instead of 20.

if anyone doesn't like the sound of this, you can either turn in your ballot with the necessary number of albums or reconfigure the scores you gave.

questions to the ilmtop100@hotmail.com e-mail. thanks!

fred solinger, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is ridiculous.

Fred, please do not use my ballot. I want absolutely no part in this. Thank you.

Ally, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This would have to happen when I'm at an advanced stage in the compilation of a new, valuable website, wouldn't it :) ?

Seriously, I mean to enter my choice, and will.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When all of this is done I'm going to put up a webpage with my choices, and the ones that I pulled for consideration that didn't make the final cut. Also, while this is by no means a desert island kind of thing for me, I've decided to pull the records that have had the most impact on me, whether or not they're my favourite from the artists. The page I do will probably have some little write-ups to explain why, because as all y'all say, that's far more interesting than just a list anyhow. Of course, that's provided I find the time. Starting to compile....NOW.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Gee - I'd forgotten all about Fred Solinger.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

me too.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm.. Sort of the anti-rockist canon? :-)
