thanx to Ronan who in his irritation with my myopia in re: dance music pointed me toward that wonderful Omni Trio track

J0hn Darn1elle, Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

RONAN!?!?! HAH!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

which is my way of saying "renegade snares" isn't STADIUM HOUSE, therefore ronan doesn't like it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I made a mix as well... info here. Pretty different from Darn1elle's.

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the Clara Rockmore treatment of Tchaikovsky a standard one? I'm always trying & failing to incorporate classical stuff into mixes without seeming gimmicky. Anyway nice one Jody esp. the Hitchcock=>Little Milton move there.

J0hn Darn1elle, Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

if i had to guess, i'd say the rockmore is the one played on theremin, yes?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's played on theremin, but it's it's a pretty standard arrangement.

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem... Assuming this is the post-your-latest-mix thread:

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, someone else who recognizes the beauty of MoL's cover of "Naive Melody!" That's a pretty standard inclusion on any tape I make.

paul cox, Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Thumbs up for John for recognizing Biosphere's brilliance.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

biosphere, brilliant? i bet biosphere is laughing his ass off right now. i can't understand the hype that this is getting.

to me, biosphere is to music as kraft cheese slices are to cheese. in both cases the former approximates the latter, except they are made through a sterile laboratory procedure that fully negates any possible aesthetic value, and hence any comparison to the latter.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 5 September 2002 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

To each his own and all but isn't the general rule that if somebody says "that's not music" then the artist in question is almost assuredly doing something right?

J0hn Darn1elle, Thursday, 5 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I definitely need to buy that damned Ludus sometime... Telescopes, too... Charles Dodge's vocal cut-ups are really cool to put on mixes, short too...

Clarke B., Friday, 6 September 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Lawrence from Felt/Denim Lawrence? I haven't heard from him since Denim on Ice. What kind of music is he making nowadays?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 6 September 2002 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Lawrence Denim can currently be found making (admittedly decidely Denimish) music under the delicious name Go-Kart Mozart...go here http://www.cherryred.co.uk/other/gokartmozart.htm for details, freakin' loverly as per!

Charlie, Friday, 6 September 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

hey thanks! good old L.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 6 September 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

no worries! album came out a couple of years ago now, but it's worth a listen in any case - bit more "novelty" than he's been in the past - if that's even possible! - but fun anyway. still, ain't nothing gonna beat Jane Suck Died In 77 and We're Looking For A Job, I reckon...

Charlie, Friday, 6 September 2002 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Another second recomendation for the Go Kart Mozart album. Like Johnathan Richman (whos being discussed on another thread) I think he can achieve very effective communication of feeling and idea through music that seems very shallow and silly.

tigerclawskank, Friday, 6 September 2002 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lawrence on my mix is something else - southern German techno guy being distributed stateside by Forced Exposure - pretty cinematic stuff that sounds to me like the imaginary soundtrack to a dance club located in a small regional airport.

I gotta check out Go-Kart Mozart.

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 6 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

a sterile laboratory procedure
Odd, I don't hear this at all in Biosphere - Compared to Global Communication, Autechre or even the God Eno, Biosphere is very 'organic', using sounds of melting ice, etc. I would rather say that Biosphere is more 'natural' ambience than studio wizardry...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 6 September 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks John but surely I've been miscredited here!

Jess you should come over to my stadium some time, we play some great house.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

...Ronan wasn't it you who gave me a list of jungle/d-n-b choons to check out before I spouted off any further about whether the stuff was any good? When we were having the music-and-drugs/music-in-clubs argt./discussion on Olde ILM? It pointed me off on a lot of interesting tangents. At any rate your abiding passion for the music you like inspires me to check out stuff I'd usually dismiss so here's to you :)

{My own style of stadium house, by the way, which lacks rhythm instruments and sounds rather more like a guy with an acoustic guitar accompanied by a guy on bass, comes to Dublin for a show on October 9th: aren't you out that way? If so do stop by: ilm meetups roXor}

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 6 September 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah actually, where are you playing? Sounds good.

I didn't give jungle and d n b no, I'm more of a house man, however if you want a list I can all too gladly provide one, haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

John, just get the Omni Trio Music for the Next Millennium album (ignore the title). Renegade Snares isn't even the best track on it. (But don't buy any other Omni Trio albums--they are very jazztastic).

Ben Williams, Friday, 6 September 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

These aren't actually on a mix tape but they're in my mind at the moment.

Loverboy - D. O. A.
Sonic Youth - Rain On Tin
Oren Ambarchi - Track 5 on Suspension
Van Halen - I'm On Fire
The Beatles - Blue Jay Way
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Boston - There Was Something About You
J. S. Bach - Clavierubung Pt 3
Aerosmith - Toys In the Attic
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle

(We listened to a lot of classic rock radio while moving.)

sundar subramanian, Friday, 6 September 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan I'm not sure of the venue name - I've got an email in to the promoter, will post here when I got it

also playing Sligo earlier that week if you're up for a lo-o-ng drive

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 6 September 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Any dates in the south of England? Please please please etc. Although the way things are right now I probably can't go unless they're on my front drive or in the kitchen at work. Sigh. (And the tape sounds good. Enon and Omni Trio on the same tape, mmm.)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 September 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"...Ronan wasn't it you who gave me a list of jungle/d-n-b choons to check out before I spouted off any further about whether the stuff was any good?"

That was me and some other people (Gareth? Omar?).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 6 September 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Well - thanks to you then Tim!

J0hn Darn1elle, Friday, 6 September 2002 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)
