Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 22 July 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

Another strong list. Between Blondie, Queen and Magazine for me. Voting Magazine.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 22 July 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

Also kind of suspect the funk section of the ILM'ers will have a hard time picking between Funkadelic, Chic and Sylvester (actually all pretty good songs IMO too).

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 22 July 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

not so impressive compared to 1977

another girl, another planet

iatee, Friday, 22 July 2011 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

Jeez. Bloody hard. I'm all about the Punk tunes here (Everything except for The Clash) plus Human League of course. Coin Flip. Very hard to get Teenage Kicks out of my head. But then Buzzcocks and Pere Ubu and The Cramps keep gnawing away at me. Plus Being Boiled is just great. I could just pretend it all DOESN'T REALLY MATTER and vote anyway.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 22 July 2011 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

Cramps cuz no one else will vote for them

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 22 July 2011 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

It's a strong list that contains a song better than Teenage Kicks.

Public Image

kornrulez6969, Friday, 22 July 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

Going with Funkadelic, partly because it's my favorite song here (barely nosing out Ubu, Chic, and the Clash), and partly because, inexplicably, this is the first appearance of a George Clinton project on the list.

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 22 July 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

Clash in a close call over Blondie and Buzzcocks.

jer.fairall, Friday, 22 July 2011 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

can't do this or choose between

* Non-Alignment Pact
* Le Freak
* You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
* Das Model
* Public Image
* White Man in Hammersmith Palais
* Ambition
* Rock Lobster
* Another Girl, Another Planet
* Running with the Devil

couldn't narrow it down from them

graveshitwave (Noodle Vague), Friday, 22 July 2011 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

but if this is gonna be mundane New Wave a-go-go I might be forced to go Chic or Sylvester

graveshitwave (Noodle Vague), Friday, 22 July 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

Have to say I am seriously missing "Down In The Tube Station By Midnight" here though. The Jam's best ever moment surely should have been represented.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

Blondie-heart of glass-a true classic

nakamura, Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

I want to vote Running With The Lobster.

But I'll go with the latter part narrowly over the former.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

Lots of bad choices here.

"Running with the Devil" tho

President Keyes, Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

buzzcocks

who shivs a git (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

Chelsea

teenage kicks easy

Peepee Soaked Heckhole (zachlyon), Saturday, 23 July 2011 03:55 (thirteen years ago)

gotta new non-alignment pact for me

nonightsweats, Saturday, 23 July 2011 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Jacksons!

Clash number two.

timellison, Saturday, 23 July 2011 04:39 (thirteen years ago)

I like this list overall much more than '77. I'll vote for "Another Girl, Another Planet," but I also think "Le Freak," "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," "Public Image," "Alternative Ulster," "Hong Kong Garden," "Running with the Devil," and (especially) "Germ Free Adolescents" are all great, and there are others on top of that I like a lot. A few others: the Adverts' "Gary Gilmore's Eyes," the Avengers' "The Amerikan in Me," Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown," Cheap Trick's "Surrender," the Germs' "Lexicon Devil," the Mekons' "Where Were You," Television Personalities' "Part-Time Punks," Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel," Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London," Wire's "Too Late." Almost as great a year as '65 or '72 for me.

clemenza, Saturday, 23 July 2011 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, I think I'm going to have to go "Alternative Ulster" number two.

Clash number three!

timellison, Saturday, 23 July 2011 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

meisenfek, Saturday, 23 July 2011 08:52 (thirteen years ago)

Adverts' "Gary Gilmore's Eyes," -- 1977

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 23 July 2011 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

Have to go with the Cramps here. I like pretty much all these songs.

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 23 July 2011 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

This is harder for me than 1977!

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Saturday, 23 July 2011 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

Went with Non Alignment Pact because I've been enjoying it recently. The Waits song is nothing special. Could've been kraftwerk or magazine or anyone really.

Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Saturday, 23 July 2011 12:08 (thirteen years ago)

Only Ones

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 23 July 2011 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

The Clash by a million miles, then Blondie, then a lot of favorites that don't come close.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 23 July 2011 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

clemenza otm about "Surrender"; in fact, the big Over the Edge three (Surrender/Just What I Needed/Teenage Lobotomy) are missing. Also, list could use some Devo.

Still a killer list; bit presumptuous but I'm thinking '77-'79 could stand up with '65-'67

Anyways, I'm thinking this is either Ever Fallen in Love or Heart of Glass (w/ Rock Lobster, Le Freak, & Public Image not far behind)

in 77 everything is fine (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 23 July 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

Sylvester

buzza, Saturday, 23 July 2011 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

The Human League: Being Boiled
The B-52's: Rock Lobster

heh

Finding it incredibly hard to choose between Buzzcocks and Blondie

Number None, Saturday, 23 July 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, is "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" not one of people's favorite MJ songs?

timellison, Saturday, 23 July 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

It's good but it's not the one

Number None, Saturday, 23 July 2011 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Don't know. Did he ever have anything more James Brown than this great, great song?

timellison, Saturday, 23 July 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

Buzzcocks: Ever Fallen In Love... (with Someone You Shouldn't've
The Undertones: Teenage Kicks
The Clash: (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
And maybe even <3 would likely all be in a top ten off all time list for me so this is really hard but it's between eithe Ever Fallen and Teenage for me.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

Fuck.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

Voted buzzcocks because I get 100 pts every time I sing it on rock band and I can't say that about the others.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Pts? %, rather.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

this list is OK, doesn't excite me that much.

voting "Rock Lobster."

I can't be the only person who finds Cheap Trick's "Surrender" awful.

The Not Liking Radiohead Awards (Turangalila), Sunday, 24 July 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

Earth, Wind & Fire - September

How ... HOW did this miss the cut?!

gay in every way but the way gays say is the only way they're gay (Eric H.), Sunday, 24 July 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

XXX Post: I suppose you mean 1978?

Anyway, I don't really consider "Killing An Arab" to be among The Cure's best moments. They have so many great songs, so no wonder that particular one was left out.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

Man this year!

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

Eric OTM re Sept too.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

September: ruined by Pomplamoose (rip)

NAGL meats (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 24 July 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

Don't Stop Me Now is the one I enjoy the most, could easily go for Blondie and Buzzcocks as well.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 24 July 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

geir: yep sorry, meant 1978. The Cure do have better moments but I think 'Killing an Arab' is a particular highlight of the year. I don't see why a band shouldn't be featured several times on the list.

prefer the B-side (10:15 Saturday Night) tbh.

Mongoloid came out in 1977 btw.

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 July 2011 09:16 (thirteen years ago)

I thought "10.15 Saturday Night" was a stand alone single (and I guess it was in 1979)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Monday, 25 July 2011 11:27 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't know it was released separately but apparently it was in France in 1979.

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 July 2011 12:06 (thirteen years ago)

prefer the B-side (10:15 Saturday Night) tbh.

Mongoloid came out in 1977 btw.

― Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo)

You're right Mongoloid as a single came out in 1977... and it's still missing from the list.... I was thinking of it in album format ( 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!' being released 1978)... maybe substitute for Uncontrollable Urge or Jocko Homo.

◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝◦ ⃝ (Moka), Monday, 25 July 2011 12:57 (thirteen years ago)

Was deciding between Germ-Free Adolescents and Don't Stop Me Now. Went with Germ.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 25 July 2011 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

xpost lol Mongoloid was a double A-side with Jocko Homo, so that's 1977 as well!

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 July 2011 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

Voted for Milk & Alcohol, it's the only one that I haven't heard just too damn much of.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

this is insane

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

Fair enough

Number None, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

hope everything is OK with you and yours Geir!

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

Jacksons: Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) 1

Mentioned it before, but I don't get this.

timellison, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

ouch Siouxie & The Banshees "Hong Kong Garden" with zero votes got robbed~!!

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

That whole late-70s/early-80s thing of making a song about Asia featuring an Asian-sounding xylophone melody might have dated that track a bit.

The fact that only two songs didn't get any votes shows how deep this year was for music.

o. nate, Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Would've voted for "Rock Lobster."

jaymc, Thursday, 28 July 2011 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

First-generation punk just hasn't done well in these polls so far (unless you count Television as punk, which seems like a stretch). Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Damned, X-Ray Spex, Stiff Little Fingers, Siouxsie, they've all maxed out at 5 or 6 votes. I don't know why that it is.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 July 2011 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

I'd have voted for Stiff Little Fingers if the track had been "Suspect Device" instead of "Alternative Ulster".

o. nate, Thursday, 28 July 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

Whatever happened to these threads? Somebody poke Geir with a stick.

Darin, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

he said that he was going to be awhile because of that tragically that happened to his country.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

Actually more because I was hardly online during a rare period of good summer weather after that. Will try to continue now.
