I say Jews.

grit of ad hominem (kkvgz), Sunday, 24 July 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

Unfair to compare them imo. Not playing.

kraudive, Sunday, 24 July 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

Adore them both for very different reasons.

kraudive, Sunday, 24 July 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

It's just as fair as to compare them to the Smahsing Pumpkins, or My Bloody Valentine or whoever.

grit of ad hominem (kkvgz), Sunday, 24 July 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)

yeah these are both great bands but it's like Marianne Moore vs. Raymond Carver - sorta gotta sit this one out.

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 24 July 2011 13:08 (fourteen years ago)

No vote

How could you consider silver jews a side project?

van ingalls wilder (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 July 2011 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

I don't. I'm joking. Nuance doesn't come out on the internet, I guess? I probably should have polled "TS Who uses the ilx on Sundays: Wet Blankets vs. Party Poopers." : /

kkvgz, Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

It's because of the Pavement vs. Smashing Pumpkins revive. That thread. I don't fucking know. Fuck it.

kkvgz, Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

imo your biggest mistake was not including an "I am a self-important fun-hater and refuse to choose between these two bands, which I am frankly insulted that you even saw fit to group together within a poll" option

bernard snowy, Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

(which is what I would have voted)

bernard snowy, Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

Pavement: 3-4 really fun albums that make me smile every time I remember they exist, + one of the truly iconic indie rock frontmen & lyricists

Silver Jews: 2-3 incredible albums that I could not live without (along with some others that I'm not as keen on), + probably the best t-shirt that I own (this one)

bernard snowy, Sunday, 24 July 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

Alright, I flipped a coin. Pavement. Happy?

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

I have the green one with the great elaborate cartoon on it. People always ask me what "Silver Jews" means--talk about "old sense of the word" and I live in New York!

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry I couldn't tell you were joking, I'm an asshole I guess

van ingalls wilder (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

This thread has bad juju

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 24 July 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

what would be interesting is a silver jews/smog/bonnie prince drag city song writers poll or some shit. tho maybe its been done.

Moreno, Sunday, 24 July 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

I've interviewed both David B and Stephen M. I went to Berman's house and had a good time, thought he was OK, and I also enjoyed talking to Malkmus. I feel like the Jews' last couple records were pretty good--Berman has a way with lyrics and all--but the earlier Jews stuff isn't so hot. For all the good the music does for Berman's (often excellent) words, he might as well have done spoken-word records. So, I vote for Pavement, who were far more musical.

Silver Jews.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 25 July 2011 02:15 (fourteen years ago)

poll is useless without the input of sunny successor and pleasant plains

mookieproof, Monday, 25 July 2011 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

I guess this is why I like the synthesis of both bands on American Water (and also Starlite Walker although it's much more uneven). Malkmus' playing is at its best, combined with Berman's best songs. Musical stuff, combined with amazing lyrics

Iago Galdston, Monday, 25 July 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

love the JOOS but it's pavement, any day

69, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

'american water' is the best album by either of these two, but i'd still take pavement overall

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

tho i love the Silver Jews, this one has to be for Pavement.

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

voting jews to stem the tide of pavementality

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

^^^voted for nader

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

hey, I resent that comparison — it's not like this is Pavement vs. Silver Jews vs. Smashing Pumpkins!

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

haha sorry -- you are totally allowed to vote joos, but only if you believe it, not just because pavement may likely win

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

nah I truly believe it — was thinking about it and realized that I have purchased three records by each band; but I also bought Berman's book, which I think gives him the edge.

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

also one time when I was wearing my Silver Jews shirt a dude asked me "hey does your shirt say SUPERJAIL???" and I went "wha?/no" — then googled 'superjail' when I got home and found out it was an awesome cartoon! another point in the joos' favor!

swaguirre, the wrath of basedgod (bernard snowy), Thursday, 28 July 2011 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
