VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD FOR ILM POST 1945 BEST JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (POLL CLOSED)

Message Bookmarked

You have up-to 100 votes. It's up to you to decide how many you wish to vote for. You can have an unranked/ranked/split ballot. Any questions please ask seandalai.
Try to vote for as many as you can to help us out and get lots of points spread about so we can get a good results list.
One of the reasons there's a max of 100 is so no-one needs to limit their ballot to 1 or 2 per artist. If you want to vote for all the Coltrane or Miles or Mingus or whoever go for it. It's a best albums poll and if they're all in your 100 fave albums then vote for them.

you have 4 weeks to vote, so feel free to listen to as many albums as you can in that time before voting.

You can listen to some of the albums on this Spotify playlist And try searching spotify for albums that are not on the playlist.

Here is the voting form that seandalai kindly did. So please direct all your thanks to him for doing the hard work.
VOTE HERE

And here is the Albums List To Choose From

• Please be sure to copy & paste your votes directly from the master nominations list,* as we need to keep the syntax exactly the same for every ballot. Thanks! • If you're voting a ranked, unranked, or split ballot, please select the appropriate option in the dropdown menu. For split ballots, please leave a space between your ranked tracks and unranked tracks.

I recommended and posted spotify links and album covers for some albums here Good albums to start off with if you're new/newish to jazz.

Remember, every ilxor is welcome to vote no matter how much you know about jazz. If you don't know much, now is the time to start! Join the fun!

.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 1 August 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

Voted. Sadly, I can't take the time to rank them, as I've got to focus on getting things packed, moved, and unpacked.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

thanks!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

just sent my unranked ballot!

69, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

If I only want to vote for around 20 albums, do I get more points total if I go with unranked only? How does it work, exactly?

little mushroom person (abanana), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

Will need to leave that to seandalai to answer.
It's pretty much the same as with johnny fever's 50s poll except its 100 albums instead of 50 maximum.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

Ranking albums helps stop ties. but you can rank some and leave the rest unranked if you wish.
i.e. Rank your top 20 but if there's another 30 albums you like not as much as those 20 then make that part of the ballot unranked.
to use coltrane or miles as an example you might have 2 particular favourite albums of each in your top 20 but dont want to leave out the others so you can put them in the unranked part.

Remember the more you all vote for the more interesting the results will be.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

oh in short; i dunno what points we're using..

thanks for voting though !

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

seandalai?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 13:12 (fourteen years ago)

Still have to listen to that giant playlist. See you in a few weeks.

Scharlach Sometimes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

it's a great playlist but it's incomplete so feel free to add to it.

Anyone want to campaign for albums?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

Would like to campaign for Lee Konitz Motion or Tommy Flanagan Jazz Poet but don't have time right this second

Scharlach Sometimes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

ive added the lee konitz to the spotify playlist (there's 2 tracks greyed out but not the 10 min track)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks. Can you add Dexter Gordon Our Man in Paris as well?

Scharlach Sometimes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 02:10 (fourteen years ago)

Added it myself. Don't know if you can see it.

Scharlach Sometimes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

Hey all, sorry I'm not around much at the moment (I'm in China for work until next week).

A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests:

- If you submit an unranked ballot, every album gets 101 points
- If you submit a ranked ballot, your top album gets 200 points, your 2nd gets 198 and so on right down to 2 points for your 100th (if you had one)
- If you submit a split ballot, the n albums in the top part score as for a ranked ballot, the bottom scores (101-n) points for each album (I think)

In no situation is the number of points given to the albums on your ballot affected by adding more albums below them. There's a breakeven point about halfway - if you only want to vote for say 20 albums then you should submit a ranked ballot as they'll all get more than 101 points.

I nominated Dexter's Go, confidently thinking "James Redd will do Our Man In Paris"

chief content officer (m coleman), Thursday, 4 August 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

Ha. You're too hip, lovebug. Actually I didn't nominate it, just wanted it on playlist.

Scharlach Sometimes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 5 August 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone checking out the playlist?

Who all is planning to vote but are just taking their time before voting?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 5 August 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

oh, post-1945. i kept seeing this as best jazz album of 1945, thought that was a little niche.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 5 August 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

would a mod adding a hyphen help?

btw seandalai how do i see who voted and for what? I cant make head nor tail of the link you gave me. i scroll down and it just goes to a blank line. confusing!

That's all the campaigning I've got in me.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 12 August 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

its a start!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 12 August 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

Discovering so much great stuff thanks to this poll and its spotify playlist! The only problem is it will be hard to decide on which gets voting precedence old or new favorites.

dsb, Friday, 12 August 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Still a fortnight to listen to all the albums on the list and vote Here is the Spotify playlist for you all to check out. But if you're ready to vote, then please do!

But maybe even make your shortlists and listen to stuff to decide now.

Remember all voters welcome from 'experts' to newbies welcome.

Hopefully marcello and julio and others will vote, they really are the jazz experts on ilm and would love to see their influence. But all are as welcome to vote.

Also remember you can do ranked list from 1-100 (or less) unranked list (upto 100) or even a top 10, top 20, top 57 + the rest of your ballot unranked. It's all up to you. A list of 5 or 100 is equally valuable to us. (Obviously would love as many full 100 lists as possible)

Just please vote for what you can!

Thanks to all who have voted already. It's much appreciated.

(sean how can i see who have voted and what for?)

xp

haha i took too long typing that out. Maybe I shouldn't have stopped for dinner halfway through!

Glad you like the spotify playlist dsb. Remember if anything is missing anyone can add to it.

You have 100 votes so old and new favourites are all welcome! Discovering stuff via this poll is the whole point!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 12 August 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

the nominations thread was open long enough for everyone to nominate what they liked with no limits.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 25 August 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Somehow I missed it. No biggie, though are the Mingus Candid albums really that under the radar?

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 25 August 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

i guess there's just so many. its not like every miles or coltrane got nommed either

btw steamin was nominated, i know as i nommed it.

pretty sure i voted for it too.

anyway i guess were in the last 36 hours of voting or so, perhaps a kindly mod could change the title to alert everyone its the last day to vote? ends 11.59 pm on whatever you the last time zone is. is it EST?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 25 August 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't have time to do my final re-listenings so a few things that might have made it have been left off. I did choose a number one album as you requested, though. All others left unranked.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 August 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Hi folks,

I'll close the polls when I get up in the morning (Britisher time). Probably means you have about eight or nine hours to straggle in.

dubplates and monster munch (seandalai), Saturday, 27 August 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

OK, just hit submit. Now I can hunker down and wait for Irene.

Zingling Baby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 27 August 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, we're done. Thanks to the 39 people who voted!

dubplates and monster munch (seandalai), Saturday, 27 August 2011 10:54 (fourteen years ago)

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Saturday, 27 August 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

billy you really do get the short straw in my polls :( your metal ballots never arrived now this

im sorry man!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

oh well im going to look at the results ive been sent!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

In the end, I just didn't feel that I had heard enough of the albums that it would be fair for me to vote. (Plus, many of my favourites were missing since I didn't participate in the nomination process.:P) I can't get Spotify in Canada either. I'll follow the results and probably use them as a guide to check out many new albums, as I do with the metal polls.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 August 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

Im sorry you guys didn't vote, you were all welcome to. It's an ILM jazz poll not a definitive jazz poll. It's a snapshot of ilxors fave jazz albums, no matter whether you're an 'expert' or 'newbie'. That's why i wanted as many as possible to vote.

39 ballots is awesome though, twice as many as i expectd. So thanks to all who voted! And a big big thanks to Seandalai for doing all the hard work!! he's the man who made it all possible!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

might start the rollout on sunday evening.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh my, some surprising results here. This is gonna be fun!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

over 500 albums voted for. Totally shocked at some albums that missed out ,some shock albums in it, some shock low and high placings. This is totally an ILM poll.

Albums i thought would be top 50 missing out. Oh man, the comments are gonna be fun, haha.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 27 August 2011 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

It's an ILM jazz poll not a definitive jazz poll.

Ha, this is exactly what I thought in a moment of doubt.

I know. It was just a personal feeling.

billy you really do get the short straw in my polls :( your metal ballots never arrived now this

im sorry man!

Ha ha, yeah, should've paid more attention I guess. I'm a jazz dilettante so in a way probably best that I missed it. Hoping that 'On the Corner', 'The Koln Concert', 'Black Woman' and 'Live at Fillmore West' do well.

The multi-talented F.R. David (Billy Dods), Saturday, 27 August 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

I did think it was kind of hilarious/awesome that Song X and Zero Tolerance for Silence were the only two Metheny albums on the list.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 August 2011 12:59 (fourteen years ago)

Since im doing a big rollout im going to start it now as i feel in the mood to start
