so I just discovered last night tonight via andy k's spotify playlist and it just really ~spoke~ to me

obviously the running theme through both songs is that insistent, relentless drum loop

in 'last night' the loop is hard-edged, stark, floodlighted - such spare scraped sounds, and then the keyboards begin to build on each other, then keyshia enters. all the while the drum loop motors on, as keyshia's desperation builds and collapses on itself, the wild-imagined anxiety of not knowing where your lover is, the cruel fantasies of what goes on in the interim. the high-stringed chords like stabs, in step with the drums. and that drum loop, unrelenting, is so appropriate - that kind of anxiety is exactly the kind of feeling that never goes away, that pulses steadily beneath any and all attempts to squash it, to think about anything else. anchoring the song as it were, through all six minutes which build up to an unfortunately rather sophomoric spoken word bit by diddy, but hey, it's diddy, take the good with the bad.

and of course 'last night pt 2' is the counterpoint reverse callback, the drum loop much more gracious, slowed down, burrs sanded off, lush from the start. the perfect response to the manic desperation of the original, a sweet and measured rondo that acknowledges all of the trauma of the first, but on its own terms - how much do you need from me? what more do I have to give? what more do I have left to give? clarifies some of the asymmetries of the relationship - if you'd heard only the first, you'd probably only be sympathetic to the aggrieved, but here's the perfect augment that admits no right but still asks you to at least view the other side.

there was a remix of the O.G. "Last Night" that featured Lil' Kim and sampled Prince's "Erotic City," that I thought was really dope back then but I can't find it on youtube

also I want to point out the amazing contrast between keyshia's emoting and the totally flat and affectless diddy, interior and exterior

My problem with part 1 is that it's a good tune and all but I can't stand Keyshia.
