Poor, even by your standards

Number None, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

is it going to be… 'pop'?

j., Wednesday, 10 August 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

Why does it say 'the band' will be touring? Isn't this Axel Willner's solo project?

Didn't he tour with a band last year?

Sounds cool, in any event.

i think i would dig a field remix of "empire state of mind"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 August 2011 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

That track was from the last album.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

moka, guy had an additional bass player and someone drumming (cologne 2009: john stanier as special guest) last two times i saw him. i suppose it's his regular outfit now, the last album was also recorded with this lineup.

the europan nikon is here (grauschleier), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 07:33 (fourteen years ago)

I'm really hoping Stanier's on this. The minimal bass / drum / synth loops on the last album were amazing.

Oooooooooooh.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 19 August 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck me that's a mess, the different parts of the music don't seem to have anything to do with one another.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 August 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

Oh now I'm sad, not listened to the YouTube yet as I'm at work.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 19 August 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

one of the songs has a nice bass part. the field is the same as burial in that they're both one trick ponies. they both need to change the name they produce under and do something different. they'll never match the glory of their first two albums and everything they do in the same mold will sound like treading water.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 19 August 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

It's Up There is the song with the nice bass + live sounding drums. Then It's White is also a refreshing break from his usual style but it feels like he trapped using the same repeating sample loop idea.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 19 August 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

This guy's trick evolved a little bit on the second album, and, on the basis of the track above, he's con tuning from there, and frankly, it's a trick I'd be happy to hear him do over and over again for an age.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 19 August 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

I find the title hilarious, the Rolling Stones "we thought we'd mess about with some guitars and drums, hey"

lukas, Friday, 19 August 2011 17:38 (fourteen years ago)

i think burial's still got room to move into dancier stuff, i heard this one out (!) recently and it sounded great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spNJX7e0z4E

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

"night air" is also pretty dancey

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 August 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

that's more woon than burial afaik

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

hdyk?

Number None, Friday, 19 August 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

xp oh i thought burial did the production on it

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 August 2011 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

co-produced, i remember some interview that said he only added some sounds and production touches, seems like woon did the bulk

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

Burial’s involvement with the album has been a source of focus for those chronicling its development so far, yet the role was far more back seat than is assumed. “I wanted to credit him, because he definitely did have a role, but I produced it from beginning to end” Woon clarifies. “But he definitely pointed me to a whole bunch of sounds. The remix he did for ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ opened my mind to that. We spent a bit of time, and he showed me some stuff with the computer.”

...

Woon met Burial, who produced recent single ‘Night Air’ [though Jamie makes it clear that Burial wasn't the driving force behind the tune's sound, instead acting more "as a session musician"], through a mutual friend. The plan was originally for the whole album to be produced by Burial, but that didn’t end up happening

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

burial's been moving into "dancier" stuff for some time now, e.g., collabs with four tet, thom yorke, and now the street halo ep. he has plenty of room to grow.

lots of artists are one-trick ponies. they just vary the trick incrementally from one album to the next. the ones that aren't -- r.e.m., for instance -- can sound like genre-hoppers, lacking any real commitment or purpose.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 19 August 2011 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

this album is good

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i like it

diamonddave85, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

the part at the very end of track2 where the track gets all messed up reminds me of one of the songs from the first record that had an obvious user or software error

diamonddave85, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

Enjoying this.

Eat a bag of vaginas (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

Weird. I kind of expected this to be more Looping-y than Things Keep Falling Down, but it isn't really. Kind of a mix of the live instrumentation aspects of his 2nd LP mixed with maybe the Sound of Light EP.

The Sunspots In Your Eyes Are Actually Cataracts, Mr. Rudich (AWALL), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

this might be my favorite first listen of his three albums. "is this power" is a killer intro and "it's up there" is chill and patient as hell

Featured on Best New Track and Best New Album on Pitchfork today. Just so you know.

The couple of songs I've heard sound more interesting than the ones from the last album but he needs to cut on the laziness for his album covers, doesn't help me think his sound isn't stuck in the same old same old.

I am starting to love this. Is This Power doesn't need a question mark.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 8 September 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

this album is fucking sweet, i've been listening to it on the way to work every morning for the past several days and end up jumpkicking my way through the front door

"Arpeggiated Love" is especially nice. i'm a sucka for the timpani.

two weeks pass...

So bored by this, wish he'd get another trick, this one feels very lazy by now.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

Totally agreed - I gave this a listen in the car and had to turn it off after a couple of tracks. I just wish he'd tell himself, "you know, you don't HAVE to be minimal..."

frogbs, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to this over the weekend and dug it a lot more than I did initially.

encarta it (Gukbe), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

is there a particular highlight? i've kept it on my ipod, but haven't really tried to find a good entry-point to it (if one song sticks, maybe i'll give the rest of the disc a chance)?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 31 October 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

i find the tracks really reach a higher plane about 5-6 minutes in, to where i don't recognize them for the first 2 minutes or so.

title track imo

my full thoughts here - i dont think he has a TON of new tricks on this one, but i've played the shit out of it regardless

Dude was awesome live at ATP; three piece band really suited it, gave it immense physicality, whereas the similar but drummer / bass-player - less Walls were just pretty (&) dull.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 6 January 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

whats the 3-piece setup like? i figured he was just a solo laptopper

(๑•̀⌓•́๑) (am0n), Friday, 6 January 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

i saw a really poorly mixed performance of the band a few years back: the live instruments were mixed far too low compared to the electronic stuff, resulting in a very uneven and jarring balance

pat methamphetamine (diamonddave85), Friday, 6 January 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

i blame the soundguy.

pat methamphetamine (diamonddave85), Friday, 6 January 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i saw them once right after From Here to Sublime and again after Yesterday and Today... both times a 3 piece band and the first time the sound was way off, but the second time was amazing.... though the second time they opened for Juan Maclean who were even better with a similar set up.

smash williams, Friday, 6 January 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

Three piece is Willner on synth and other gadgets and occasional guitar, plus bassist (in NoMeansNo tshirt) and drummer.

realeasing another album, now under the name Loops of Your Heart (we get it, you're into loops). album called And Never Ending Nights. Dronier and krautier with less emphasis on rhythm or beats. sounds good. should put it on that sequencer albums thread.

mizzell, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

Ooooh.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

"broken bow" is sick, the rest of it is nice but kinda boring imo

thirteen years pass...

Bumping this thread because the other Field album threads are back in business, and this one should be too. "Is This Power" is my favorite track of theirs, just love the build-up.
