Thanks for reminding me about this trend in graphic design, Tuomas.

Thread AKA "Lawnmower Man: the mix"

Oh god, the flyers for these kinds of clubs/gigs were even better.

My old housemate in NYC and I used to have a wall of our apartment where we'd pin them up to admire the total grooviness. I should see if I still have any of them, they were amazing.

I'm still looking out for a copy of this.

Still need to actually buy a copy of this.

I actually used to like this kind of graphic design in the early 90s (and I still kinda do), but even back then I thought this was just awful:

This, on the other hand, is still classic:

The front cover of The Black Dog's "Spanners" is actually kinda restrained when it comes to techno computer graphics...

...but the back cover is a thing to behold:

The start of a fine tradition:

Yeah, obviously many of the music videos of the era shared the same aesthetic:

When this video came out, I remember me and my friends were like, "It's trippy computer animation, but in BLACK AND WHITE, how innovative is that?!":

Tuomas, Friday, 12 August 2011 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

And then you had those "X-Mix" (or whatever they were called) video mixtapes which were nothing but popular techno tunes of the day illustrated by cheap computer animation of flying in space/underwater/another dimension/etc. MTV sometimes used to play bits from those tapes, if some techno tune didn't have an official music video.

That Mouse on Mars Vulvaland cover posted up-thread is one of my all time favourites. So beautiful, so fitting.

Except for the crappy work they did with the woman's hand and foot: even with the flare effect you can see them just ending in the middle.
