Dirty Beaches - Badlands

I know it's been talked up a bit on some other threads, but I'm curious what you all think of this one.

I'm digging it but the appropriation of so much is nagging at me a bit - "A Hundred Highways" is built around a huge Rallizes Denudes sample, "Lord Only Knows" is Francoise Hardy's "Voila" and "horses" is som Link Wray song ("I'm Branded")...

and I know I know who cares, sampling is fine - no big deal

but coupled with his full-on Suicide vocal thing... it does seem pretty pastiche-y

but then again I do really like it and maybe I should just get over it

love this disc. wasn't aware of the sampling, but who cares. it's retro, but retro of a different era (50s noir), and sounds vital/edgy.

obv have to hear this

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 15 August 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Saw him open for Dum Dum girls way back earlier this year....

....oh my God, if there was something meritable about the music the guy was totally ruining it with his showmanship. I must've smoked about 6 cigarettes through his entire set and even seemed to influence the large majority of the crowd to take up smoking out of boredom.

kelpolaris, Monday, 15 August 2011 08:00 (fourteen years ago)

smoking = stepping outside the venue, as it's prohibited to smoke indoors here in Denver. As I assume elsewhere...mostly.

kelpolaris, Monday, 15 August 2011 08:01 (fourteen years ago)

Dirty....Beaches?

lol yr making fun of a band called dirty beaches.... didnt you start a thread abt 'hype williams'?

just sayin, Monday, 15 August 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't seen him live, so can't say if he would have made me smoke six cigarettes... the stuff I've seen on YouTube seems cool, if a little self-conscious...

brio, Monday, 15 August 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 15 August 2011 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

xp Hype Williams is an original name, at least. What were some other names he was tossing around, Wolf Castles? Beach Bear? Crystal Beach?

Also, Hype Williams shits all over this dreck, sorry

cool dude but i kind of hate this stuff, makes u realize there was a reason 50's musicians were confident and poised and perfect and endearing rather than mumbly and volatile

xpost lollll

I didn't say it was a good name fer chrissakes. It's actually a miracle they haven't been sued yet. My point is that you're not likely to confuse a band called Hype Williams with dozens of faceless bands with animal-and-beach-themed names.

ok finally hearing this

ctrl+f cramps 0 results

why

this is basically just grimier cramps with some sprinklings of suicide

lux interior always seemed like he was gonna stab you with his toy knife and then try to sleep with you

this dude seems like he wants to stab you with his real knife and then try to sleep with you

steens furiously (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 18 August 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

this doesn't really sound like Suicide or The Cramps, so much as the music James, the motorcycle "dreamboat" records in Twin Peaks.

sarahel, Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

listen harder.

steens furiously (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

seriously, you're telling me you don't hear any frankie teardrop in "speedway king" or human fly in "horses" and all over the rest of it?

steens furiously (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

lord that cobain gif is awesome

irl lollin

markers, Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

okay, i can hear suicide similarities, but I dunno about Lux Interior/Cramps -- like The Cramps were pastiche of Orbison, Elvis, etc.

sarahel, Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

'this band sounds like another band!'

Lamp, Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

"this band sounds like another band who sounded like another band"

sure, but with a foregrounding of the uncurrent of creepiness in the latter

and this is carrying that on

four weeks pass...

Bought a copy today. Listening now. It's fantastic.

chromecassettes, Saturday, 17 September 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

it is. and his older stuff, which is now available on bandcamp, is just as good.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 October 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

new stuff has a very different sound. abandons 50s vibe in favor of something more electro-y, maybe? certainly more propulsive. sax is distinctive on these new cuts.

badlands is a great album

flopson, Sunday, 23 October 2011 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

yep. one of my favorites of the year.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 October 2011 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

it's so short, too

flopson, Sunday, 23 October 2011 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

well, i think it's technically billed as a "mini-album" or "extended EP," or something like that.

yeah, it's short.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 October 2011 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

the old material he put out on various cassette-only labels (e.g., night-people; italian beach babes) is now available on bandcamp. it's also outstanding.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 October 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

one year passes...

Man. "Dune Walker" sounds like Iggy Pop and Steve McKay over a seriously reduced, almost fried Basic Channel track. And then the guitar starts.

Frances HELL NAW (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 1 June 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

This new album is incredible.

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Monday, 10 June 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

Late at night working, seems just about perfect right now.

MikoMcha, Monday, 10 June 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)

new album's really interesting, i like how he switched it up just a little bit, like another album of murky rockabilly would've been a retread but it's still super-recognisably dirty beaches

flopson, Monday, 10 June 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

This track is a highlight, especially the electro-doom second half:

six years pass...

Just heard the August At Akiko's soundtrack and finding it difficult to believe this is the same guy. Some really nice jazz improv here. Was there talk about this album somewhere I might have missed? Also is it weird that Factory released this?

Anyone seen the film?

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 00:42 (five years ago)

I've seen it! one of my favorites in recent history

Ah, good to know! I'll seek it out. Thanks!
